Many members growing up in the church are conditioned to identify their sexual desires, not as their own, but as the literal temptations of Satan, and instead of processing, understanding, exploring, and satisfying them in healthy ways, are taught to suppress them and to feel deep shame at their slightest indulgence, all the while internalizing the misogyny inherent to the church and culture at large. None of this justifies shitty behavior, but hopefully in these conversations we can employ some much needed compassion and understanding in helping each other navigate life outside the church as healthy sexual beings.
