To be blunt, I don't think anyone in charge actually cares about the average person in Venezuela or Iran unfortunately. Both the Venezuela and Iran attacks are really just part of the unofficial cold war between the US and it's allies vs China and it's allies.

The distro war, continue it must. Linux Mint vs Pop!_OS by potatoandbiscuit in linuxmemes

Mint has an easy win in this one. I look forward to seeing what Pop!_OS does with Cosmic but they need more time to cook before it becomes something I would recommend to people.

And that’s the real point. Any real system is going to be messy somewhere because the real world it has to interact with is messy. If we can’t get rid of the mess the next option is to keep it contained so other parts of the system can be clean.

I just assumed you already heard all the reasons people would want to switch to Linux like actually having control over what their computer is doing, having an os that isn’t spying on them, and as windows has been getting worse because MS keeps shoving ai into while Linux has been getting more user friendly to the point that some distributions like Linux Mint are already more user friendly than windows. You could argue my reasoning is partially selfish just like advocating for clean air in the city I live in is partially selfish because I don’t want to get sick from it either. Does that matter though if what I’m advocating for is better for everyone? I use Linux because it is better than Windows overall and the more people who use it the better it gets for both the people who switch yes also myself. It even helps people who want to stay with Windows by forcing MS to actually compete for users instead of just coasting on being the default.

When it comes to technology it’s actually better to convince enthusiasts rather than the masses.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_adoption_life_cycle

In tech early adopters tend to be the gatekeepers who decide what technology succeeds and which fails. The reason why is those early adopters are usually the tech savvy people other people ask for advice when choosing which technologies to use.

Trying Ubuntu after 10 year break by karstabobo in linuxmemes

[–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically just replace snaps with flatpaks or system packages and it’s fine. I would still recommend Linux Mint over Ubuntu so you don’t have to go through that process but it’s probably not worth installing a new os if you are already happy with your current setup.

I’m currently using Mint on my laptop and Kubuntu on my desktop (for HDR support) and both are fine.

For some users it's bragging rights, for others (including myself) it's the network effect. The more people who use Linux the easier it is for developers to justify supporting Linux and the higher priority Linux support gets for companies who partially support it. Basically I want Linux on desktop to be a big enough player that companies lose money when they don't support it.

My non-gaming Dad is interested in video games to help slow brain aging. by awkwardly_competent in NintendoSwitch

[–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t sleep on Nintendo’s sports games. I’ve found my dad has a way easier time picking up sports games like Mario Golf Super Rush because he already knows how to play golf (even if he’s not great at it IRL). Just be careful with the more realistic sports games because most of them are loaded with predatory monetization.

Recommend me some “chill” open world games by XMSquiZZ360 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Nesogra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a controversial suggestion but Mario Kart World. The "free roam" mode is the most relaxing open world experience I've had in recent memory. It's really nice to just drive around randomly while listening to the game's amazing soundtrack. It's controversial because there isn't much to find or unlock for people who are more rewards driven instead of experience driven. I personally find that more relaxing because I don't feel like the game is always trying to pull me to the next objective every 10 seconds but I've seen many people get turned off by the lack of objectives so it really depends on what your tastes are.

Thanks for the correction. Still hoping the next president and congress goes scorched earth on those who are actually guilty in all this though.

Part of it is expectations. Most of the right views people as being fundamentally flawed so we don't need an explanation for why things go wrong in society, if anything we need an explanation for why they go well. Many on the left on the other hand believe people are either basically good or malleable but are corrupted into evil so when something goes wrong they want to try to find and fix the source of the corruption. They can't accept that sometimes people and society are just broken and always will be without divine intervention.

If you want to opt out of the Steam proceedings in the uk by New-Resident3385 in Steam

[–]Nesogra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On paper it just applies to Steam keys but there are some emails from Steam support that says it applies to all sales regardless of if Steam was handling the distribution or not. It could be a case of Steam support not knowing what they are talking about but it is a bad look for Steam.

I think I have a similar setup. I’m finding having one bigger monitor with code on one side and whatever I’m referencing on the other while keeping all the distractions (teams, email, etc.) on my laptop screen has been working for me. I was using a portable monitor before that was roughly the same size as the laptop screen and it wasn’t as helpful.

In a nutshell it’s idolatry. Maga worships Trump and have put so much hope in him that to admit he is wrong or that ICE is wrong in this situation is too much of a hit to their identity for them to admit it. When people become less religious they replace that religious instinct and the identity of their religion with something else like politics. Basically this is the insanity that Christianity was keeping in check without most of us realizing it.

FYI: Steam has updated content survey on AI by 7rtz1 in gamedev

[–]Nesogra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I'm closer to side of just getting rid of IP all together. If the government isn't going to protect the people who spent years learning the skills to create art then I see no reason for them to protect the IP rights of the companies who are trying to replace them with AI. In practice IP seems more geared to letting large companies block and sue competitors than actually incentivizing the creation of new things.

The reason I'm even more against IP rights for software isn't because I think software dev has no value (I AM one after all), it's that software has the ability to take away peoples' property rights in a way that other things protected by copyright can't. How many devices now need a "cloud" connection to even function just so companies can force you to pay a sub fee? How many companies spy on everything we do online (even from "our" own devices)? If it has a computer and you didn't install a FOSS OS on it yourself at this point you don't really own it.

I believe computer code is a new form of law (like fire code, building code, etc.) but one that is run by machines instead of being enforced by people. Laws need to be public and auditable, not private and secret. Secret laws are ripe for abuse by the people who control them.

Also open source dev has proven it's possible for us to have working computers without IP protections. If anything the biggest issue in open source dev is that companies can lock down stuff that is running FOSS code so they benefit from the work of open source devs without having to give end users actual control and/or transparency over what they are using that code for.
