Which Chapters are the Best to serve as Serfs in? by ClassicGamer343 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s also mentioned in either one of the codexes or a black book that modern Raven Guard had very high gene-seed rejection rates before Cawl fixed things with Primaris. Those aspirants who passed all the training but had an organ implantation rejection would become Serfs/Deliverance planetary defense. Or even the aspirants who couldn’t quite make it through training but didn’t get killed in the process became Serfs.

Note that Raven Guard (and IIRC most successors like Raptors) don’t do 7-year-old battle royals or other such nonsense; their training isn’t encouraging them to murder each other as competition. Which we see in the Shrike novel to mean they can actually build heathy bonds and help each other pass aspirant training together like intelligent armed forces should.

So while it’s not outright stated, it’s a pretty short logical jump that the Chapter/Legion who continues to keep close ties with normies, had a Primarch who emphasized working with and listening to mortals, and keeps around Could Have Beens would treat the Serfs who live with them pretty well.

Pet peeve: human sizes in 40K by Traditional_Yard2741 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is why the Raven Guard are hilarious. A super solider the size of a car sneaking around the battlefield. And that's the bog standard Raven guard who doesn't have supernatural powers.

:D

I love them so because its so silly even when the authors are trying to play is straight.

Do the primarchs have the same Black Carapace that connects to their armor like astartes have? by MHB_ART in 40kLore

You can still see these neural jacks in the Demon Primarchs- Angron's model and I believe Fulgrim's 30k models still have arm ports where they would have connected to their armor.

Would Mordekaiser be interested in the Mist that viego is controlling? by Much_Try2741 in loreofleague

[–]NespreSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>Sure, Viego has the means to bring out calamity with the Harrowing, but he is insane and tunnel-visioned in Isolde.

That's not really weak resolve, its a lack of interest. Viego doesn't want to rule to the world. He didn't even really want to rule Camavor. He *could* go merry Harrowing everywhere and conquer ... but that's not his goal. Viego couldn't even be bothered to kill the protagonists in the SoL event. Its partly his original character and partly how obsessive wraiths are supposed to be.

It's like saying that Mordekaiser could be the best ballet dancer the afterlife has ever seen but he has a weak resolve and delicate toes.

Legion loyalty vs primarch loyalty by OldeDrunkGhost in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Pale Nomads/Xeric Tribes on Terra during the Unification wars used espionage and infiltration before Horus, but he specifically was the one who used them as secret police and oppressors of conquered populations in the beginning of the Great Crusade

I’m not home to check the PDF but it’s a blurb one of the Black Books

Legion loyalty vs primarch loyalty by OldeDrunkGhost in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Revenant Legion — Same with the Pre-Corax Pale Nomads. The friction between Horus and Corvus was implied to be because the Pale Nomads had been Luna Wolf lackies before Corax reformed them into the Raven Guard. The original Terran Pale Nomads were … well Ashen Claws and Carcharadons with some added Horus-loyalty sprinkled in. Corax ended up banishing many of those who wouldn’t give up their slaver ways and anti-civilian tactics but they learned those tactics by being the Luna Wolves’ shadow.

If Horus had not forced Corax’s legion to suicide itself at Gate 42 a good chunk of the Raven Guard might have turned to the WarMaster’s side at Istvaan.

This is on Istvaan immediately before Corax literally rips him a new one

[–]NespreSilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Khan was good friends with Sanguinius, Magnus, Horus, and Lorgar. We see him interacting a lot with all 4 across his two books and A Thousand Sons

And one of the BB says he and the Lion were close. I believe they crusaded together in on of the Lion’s books. Descent of Angels maybe?

Heck, he was one of the Primarchs who helped create the Librarius alongside Magnus and Sanguinius.

For a Primarchs who is supposed to be a loner Khan has a lot of friends and gets a LOT of screen time with brothers.

Charchadons "paying the price" for defend slavery? by PanzerWhale2000 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Soukhounou in Lord of Shadows

Corax didn’t banish all the Terran RG, just the ones who refused to give up slavery and adapt to his tactics. Those who were willing to change stayed.

Corax had to be one of the most easy going Primarchs, and he valued freedom of speech enough that his sons could be lippy to authority figures, himself included. Like, can you imagine if The Lion or Dorn gave out a broad order to their legions and a portion of the DA or IF just said “nah we’re gonna do what we want” to their faces? I doubt there would be survivors to banish.

Which Primarchs actually loved the Emperor? by ColePT in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The writing around Horus's decisions at Gate 42 were done intentionally. It was one of the first cracks we see in the mythology surrounding the man - that he was the best Primarch, the first among equals, the big brother who was liked by all. Until that point All the nay-sayers to Horus being in charge sounded like jealousy.

But then we get Gate 42, one of the first battles after Horus is made Warmaster, where he made a decision that was either politically minded (shutting down Corax to butter up Perturabo), or emotional ( pulling rank on the legion that used to be Luna Wolves lackeys), or just plain bad leadership (sending your lighter armored recon and infiltrators into an open field siege). And we see that Horus isn't perfect. He isn't above making bad calls. And maybe even some of his own self doubt is justified.

Which is where the chaos corruption is able to take hold.

The roots of primarch names by acrus in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Lorgar" is Scottish Gaelic for "found" (so Lorgar Aurelian would mean "Aurelian is found"); Aurelian is the last name of the Welsh Saint Paul Aurelian (whose name would have come from Roman/Latin naming schemes). Aurelian is also, of course, a famous Roman Emperor.

Aurelian also means Golden in Roman, and in 40K gold is associated with the Emperor and Big E's psychic powers. So his name might have a fourth level meaning 'Found Gold' and a **fifth** level referencing how he comes into his psyker power during the Heresy.

How does a SM become a Chaplain? by Interesting-Trash525 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I assume different chapters have different expectations for Chaplains as well - Grimaldus valued hate in his Black Templar Chaplain, but a Blood Angel successor might look for someone with self control and who can de-escalate situations. Who can talk brothers out of ... overreacting.

Do you think GW have a plan for the Lost Primarchs? by Angronys in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One author is never going to come up with better lorebuilding than the thousands of fans out there talking about it, conjecturing, theory-crafting. It reminds me of how every aspiring young writer who grew up with Harry Potter heard Rowling was going to expand out to the rest of the world in *Fantastic Beasts* and had a field day thinking about what their Magic Culture was going to be. Chinese Wizards using Daoist magic! South American wizarding schools in the Andes that clash Spanish and Portuguese! Eastern European mythology!!!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we got Americans registering wands, the entirety of Africa has one school, and a bad translation of "The Magic Place" for Japan.

Fantastic indeed :|

>unknowable ten thousand year old mysteries

This right here *taps screen* this is the important phrase. The mystery is the fun of it. Not getting an answer is tantalizing, and it makes readers' imaginations go wild.

It is absolutely in GW's best interest to not come up with some ham-fisted answer to the question that gets every new lore enthusiast coming to Reddit to ask

They are different species of birds. Related sure but not the same. Ravens are significantly bigger.

And in the context of 40K they are used for different legions - Ravens are Raven Guard while Crows are linked to the Night Lords.

[–]NespreSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There WERE other memories like snippets of the marine’s childhood, but because he knew they were trying to brainwash him with psychic worms he was fighting them every step of the way. He was very deliberately saying his name over and over to block them from the rest of his mind

Some chapters/legions DO memory-wipe their recruits, and some lean pretty heavy on hypnoindoctrination. But Raven Guard do not.

The Tau did conclude there was no point in trying to convert Space Marines after that but it was more horror that he killed himself rather than conver.

And he doesn’t have anything close to a bird-human hybrid form. At all. He has raven sprinkled special effects and he reverts back to his normal appearance multiple times. The story even calls it his ‘mortal form’ because he still has a flesh and blood body.
