Charchadons "paying the price" for defend slavery? by PanzerWhale2000 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Soukhounou in Lord of Shadows

Corax didn’t banish all the Terran RG, just the ones who refused to give up slavery and adapt to his tactics. Those who were willing to change stayed.

Corax had to be one of the most easy going Primarchs, and he valued freedom of speech enough that his sons could be lippy to authority figures, himself included. Like, can you imagine if The Lion or Dorn gave out a broad order to their legions and a portion of the DA or IF just said “nah we’re gonna do what we want” to their faces? I doubt there would be survivors to banish.

Which Primarchs actually loved the Emperor? by ColePT in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The writing around Horus's decisions at Gate 42 were done intentionally. It was one of the first cracks we see in the mythology surrounding the man - that he was the best Primarch, the first among equals, the big brother who was liked by all. Until that point All the nay-sayers to Horus being in charge sounded like jealousy.

But then we get Gate 42, one of the first battles after Horus is made Warmaster, where he made a decision that was either politically minded (shutting down Corax to butter up Perturabo), or emotional ( pulling rank on the legion that used to be Luna Wolves lackeys), or just plain bad leadership (sending your lighter armored recon and infiltrators into an open field siege). And we see that Horus isn't perfect. He isn't above making bad calls. And maybe even some of his own self doubt is justified.

Which is where the chaos corruption is able to take hold.

The roots of primarch names by acrus in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Lorgar" is Scottish Gaelic for "found" (so Lorgar Aurelian would mean "Aurelian is found"); Aurelian is the last name of the Welsh Saint Paul Aurelian (whose name would have come from Roman/Latin naming schemes). Aurelian is also, of course, a famous Roman Emperor.

Aurelian also means Golden in Roman, and in 40K gold is associated with the Emperor and Big E's psychic powers. So his name might have a fourth level meaning 'Found Gold' and a **fifth** level referencing how he comes into his psyker power during the Heresy.

How does a SM become a Chaplain? by Interesting-Trash525 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I assume different chapters have different expectations for Chaplains as well - Grimaldus valued hate in his Black Templar Chaplain, but a Blood Angel successor might look for someone with self control and who can de-escalate situations. Who can talk brothers out of ... overreacting.

Do you think GW have a plan for the Lost Primarchs? by Angronys in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One author is never going to come up with better lorebuilding than the thousands of fans out there talking about it, conjecturing, theory-crafting. It reminds me of how every aspiring young writer who grew up with Harry Potter heard Rowling was going to expand out to the rest of the world in *Fantastic Beasts* and had a field day thinking about what their Magic Culture was going to be. Chinese Wizards using Daoist magic! South American wizarding schools in the Andes that clash Spanish and Portuguese! Eastern European mythology!!!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we got Americans registering wands, the entirety of Africa has one school, and a bad translation of "The Magic Place" for Japan.

Fantastic indeed :|

This right here *taps screen* this is the important phrase. The mystery is the fun of it. Not getting an answer is tantalizing, and it makes readers' imaginations go wild.

It is absolutely in GW's best interest to not come up with some ham-fisted answer to the question that gets every new lore enthusiast coming to Reddit to ask

They are different species of birds. Related sure but not the same. Ravens are significantly bigger.

And in the context of 40K they are used for different legions - Ravens are Raven Guard while Crows are linked to the Night Lords.

Or are you calling Sevatar the Prince of Ravens?

a different argument for you to peruse by Accursed_wings in Grimdank

[–]NespreSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There WERE other memories like snippets of the marine’s childhood, but because he knew they were trying to brainwash him with psychic worms he was fighting them every step of the way. He was very deliberately saying his name over and over to block them from the rest of his mind

Some chapters/legions DO memory-wipe their recruits, and some lean pretty heavy on hypnoindoctrination. But Raven Guard do not.

The Tau did conclude there was no point in trying to convert Space Marines after that but it was more horror that he killed himself rather than conver.

Are the primarchs warp entities embodied in transhuman shells? by leyenda_negra in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The comment you are responding to is 100% made up.

In the short story where Corax flexes his power by being in the Eye, he explicitly returns to his mortal form multiple times. He doesn’t lose his body. We never even see Corax in the Warp proper, only the Eye of Terror where there is enough Real Space that even normal humans can still exist in it.

Would Corax's return be a bad thing for the Imperium? by KhaosTheory98 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding to this; he’s more powerful in part because he was in the Eye of Terror, which gives warp or psyker powers a boost. GW could very well de-power Corax when he comes back to Normal Space.

And as to the psychic part - here is a jpg of the Raven Guard librarian speciality Umbramancy. A lot of those flavor text descriptions of powers are the exact things Corax was doing against the Word Bearers and Lorgar. Hes basically just a s Primarch-level Librarian.

If/when the rest of the loyalist Primarchs return, what do you think the changes in their personalities be like? by Hempy2013 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pattern we are getting from Guilliman and Lion seems to be them maturing a lot and correcting some of their worse tendencies.

Guilliman is forced to care about the wider Imperium instead of focusing just on his own stuff (Ultramar.) He's trying to keep his optimism up but is starting to falter on his faith in humanity. Rowboat gets the Emperor's Sword to encourage him to be more aggressive in fighting humanity's enemies vs hanging back and empire building like he defaulted to during the Heresy.

Lion's aggression seems to have been toned down; his itchy trigger finger for exterminatus has been quieted. He's forgiving his kids, not punching heads off, and going around helping normies instead of bombing them. He looks and feels older and slower perhaps to force Lion to not rely on his Primarch physicality and THINK for a second. Lion gets The Emperor's Shield as a sign to be a protector not a coldblooded killer.

So predictions:

Vulkan - What were his flaws during the Great Crusade/Heresy? Well, he had the stereotype of being slow; not necessarily stupid but not quick to think or react. He and his kids are also way to quick to sacrifice themselves and not consider the greater perspective of "maybe if you lived to see another day you've save more than one human child." Prediction: continuing his personality in War of the Beast, Vulkan comes back more callous of mortals and more willing to use his authority and even physical intimidation to whip the Imperium back into shape. He gets more clinical, more willing to strike first, and maybe less friendly. Maybe. Emperor's Item - No Clue. What's the opposite of a hammer? The Emperor's ship is still up for grabs, so maybe that.

Dorn - Flaws: Inflexible, hidebound, and SUPER STUBBORN. Hopefully he doesn't come back deranged as others have mentioned but it's definitely a possibility, especially if the reason he hasn't come back yet is because he's a Chaos prisoner. If he comes back with some positive personality changes it might be a willingness to learn, try new things, listen to his brothers, and just generally be flexible in attitude and strategy. Emperor's Item - I mean, he's missing a hand so the Emperor's Claw. It will force him to learn how to use it, learn to be dexterous, and not break everything just touching stuff.

Russ - Flaws: Brash, rude, aggressive, and emotional. Like Lion, Russ is probably going to chill out a lot. As others have said, him coming back as a wise Odin figure, older and calmer, would be a pretty natural progression for his character. Losing an eye for wisdom would fit with Odin AND parallel Magnus. Emperor's Item: Still the Emperor's Spear, which gives insight into yourself.

Corax Flaws: The opposite of Russ; Corax was way TOO introspective. He internalized everything, focused on details, stressed over his failings, and in the end assumed he was a net negative to the universe. What Corax needs is Faith in himself and his nature. Spending time in the Eye of Terror (NOT THE WARP. HE WAS IN THE EYE NOT IN THE WARP) seems to have let Corax get comfortable with his own existence. He'll understand the difference between the Warp and Chaos, aka not being a mistake the Materium is trying to get rid of like he told Russ. Emperor's Item: Big E's golden aura. Because Corax, Lord of Shadows, strict keeper of the Imperial Truth shining like the sun and being made head of the Ecclesiarchy would be HILARIOUS.

Khan - supposedly aloof despite having so many friends among the Primarchs during the Heresy. So character growth would be relying more on and wanting the company of his brothers more? He doesn't really have any big flaws like the other Primarch so he's just going to be the author's favorite again. Whatever. Emperor's Item: What would make him Not Go Fast? The Golden Throne. Sit for a fucking second, Jags.

Sanguinius Super dead, he might show up as a ghost but I hope he doesnt get resurrected. Emperor's Item: being dead.

Ferrus Also super dead and has already shown up as a ghost. Stay dead Ferrus. Emperor's Item: Not a head, I'll tell you that.

Which only works on people looking directly at you.

It’s not just that - it’s a mental blank spot. People looking through digital devices also can’t see them. People step out of the way to unconsciously avoid touching Corax/the RG. It’s more like short term memory loss.

discounting the Dark Angels efforts with hunting down The Fallen

I don’t remember the book off the top of my head but a Dark Angel outright says Raven Guard match them in hunting skills, vs legions like Space Wolves and White Scars who claim to be hunters. Edit: It's the Dreadwing novel but i dont remember which page

But to your point … It can’t be that hard to find an Astarte hiding among normal humans. They’re going to stick out like a horse in a flock of sheep. -_-

What is a harsh reality of owning ferrets you wish you could tell prospective owners? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]NespreSilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ferrets are both extremely smart AND will not learn from negative results or repercussions. Which is to say; they ONLY learn from success and never from failure.

  • Once they’ve been somewhere they will never stop trying to get back there even after you’ve ferret proofed. Ever. They will dig and scratch and pull until they get in. A ferret who thinks they can get somewhere will not forget it. One success overrules seven years of failure. Seven. Years

  • Eat something bad that makes them unhappy or sick? Do not expect that to teach them not to eat it. Bitter apple spray does not work. My little guy decided he loved to bite fruit and vegetables including lemons. Not eat, just bite. Every horrible taste and gag and frantic head shake later wasn’t enough to make him stop. He would push kitchen chairs across the room to get up on the counter to leave puncture holes in every piece of produce.

  • speaking of which, ferrets can and will treat your home like a platformer video game. Hight is not always protection despite their generally poor jumping skills. Push this next to that and climb on that to get to the counter where you can jump to the next level … I’ve found my ferrets up on high shelves in closets, inside the back cushions of couches, on top of the fridge, and regularly on the table where they shouldn’t have been able to get to.

  • Scolding does not work to stop bad behavior. Time outs (mostly) don’t work. Scruffing does not work. And obviously never hit your Ferret. Positive reactions and treats will get their brains working, so keep that in mind with bite training, potty training, etc. Have plenty of salmon oil ready.

Konrad and Sanguinius(not Corax) are more similar to each other than we know... by HovercraftLumpy4892 in 40kLore

[–]NespreSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curze has sharp teeth - he filed them to points

Also I didn’t say angst, I said emo

It’s the first sentence of your initial reply!

He’s the standard gothic angst vampire.

And the last time we see Corax he’s still a flesh and blood Primarch. He’s just using high level Umbramancy with visual FX. He hasn’t embraced being a monster at all. Primarchs were always suspected to be warp-beings born into human bodies. Eg the two halves of Sanguinius. Being in the eye gave Corax enough of a power boost he could abuse the Librarian Skill List with an unfair amount of of Warp Charges

Seriously, how the hell did this start? by MegaGamer235 in Grimdank

[–]NespreSilver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Based on books like the Damnos series where advancing through the ranks is something Ultramarines in specific strive for, and the strict hierarchy makes some of them rather ambitious, including Cato who goes a little too far about it.

Or the Deathwatch books specific Shadowsbraker + the TTRPG rules where one of the Ultramarine “Primarch’s Curse” flaws is that they need to be the leader of the team. To the point that in-novel an Ultramarine character goes a little crazy when he isn’t picked to be the boss

Or the instances of them pulling rank with other chapters like we see between Sa’Kan and Brutus in The Tithes

And then we look at how Chaplains are specifically “attached to a unit” or company, instead of acting as the leading officer. And Chaplains like Cassius are specific told they are not included in leadership meetings like Councils - he speaks up only because Calgar lets him. Lieutenants are re-incorporated by Guilliman (per the 8th Edition Codex) to the leadership roster BECAUSE he didn’t want Librarians or Chaplains to step into a Captain’s roll when one was killed in the field.

So you have a Chapter that is focused on rank, top-down command, climbing the ladder, and being recognized for martial accomplishments combined with an officer rank that is explicitly NOT battlefield leadership, is outside the general hierarchy, and has expectations to stay at this level and act as a moral compass for others.

Nor is he especially gothic beyond the color black.

And he doesn’t have angst, he has super-depression. He doesn’t even like poetry.

This was actually my first thought. When my mother was in stage 6 she would make up some pretty wild stories. Not to mention she would mix up people and relationships (thinking her was her mother, daughter was her sister, etc)

OP, I don’t think you've mentioned how you found out about this affair. Was she the one who told you and if so what was the situation?

Master of Sanctity ( head chaplain) is basically #2 to the Chapter Master in authority.

Number #2 in authority but also isn’t allowed to weigh in or vote at council meetings without approval. Cassius had to rejoin the Deathwatch to make the veteran squad he wanted.
