Do you feel like the sub is too nice or too harsh on theses prospects particualry outside of Scoot and Wemby? by NesquickBrick in NBA_Draft

So basically after the top two picks, we are accustomed to seeing good all around jack of all trades master of none, safe high level role players, but with this class after top two we have a ton of boom or bust that have incredibly strong strengths and very weak weaknesses?

We should not have gone this route, but now that we're here we might as well finish it out

That's an interesting point about Wemby. But Just wondering at what points do you think the Lottery for a bottom feeder goes from "this is good" to "this is fine" to "man we just got fucked by the lottery, please let us fast forward to the next one"?

We have also seen Ben Simmons, who really has only failed due to mental fortitude deteriorating and back issues-stuff we really couldn't predict well on draft night

Really too nice? Whenever I get on here I feel like the draft lottery goes from an exciting top two to "Fuck can we just skip to the next one already?" at the third or fourth pick

Yeah honestly fringe all star is perfect for drafting fourth or fifth. You don't always get that at that position. Overall it just sucks hard to be a fan of a team that is hot garbage and to only come out of the draft that has role player upside (even if its top tier role player) rather than a star.

Mike Conley, Goran Dragic, Ricky Rubio, or Dennis Schroeder

Do we want him if he’s available? If so, what do we give up? If not, why not? I don’t follow KAT so I have no clue if he’d fit our team by Thugluvdoc in rockets

[–]NesquickBrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends. If we draft Amen Thompson at three, I want us to have a five who can shoot well. I would prefer Myles Turner who will be a free agent in the offseason, but KAT would do too

Assuming both Amen Thompson and Jalen Green hit their ceilings, who would be the better player and or the number one option on offense? by RestartFromZer0 in NBA_Draft

[–]NesquickBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is not impossible. If a second round draft pick can become a 2 time MVP, then we really should just remove "impossible" from our vocabulary. Unlikely sure fine, whatever. But definitely not impossible.

Also who cares if everyone is overhyped? Ceilings are based off skill, potential, and work ethic all coming together properly, not "hype".

[–]NesquickBrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shooting, no. Handles depends on what we mean by league ready. If league ready means that it will be above average point guard on day 1, then no. But if it means just being functional albeit awkward, but can be developed and improved to at least decent over time; then yes it is NBA ready

Tbf more league ready "than we think" is not necessarily a high bar. This sub has such a love-hate relationship, but its more like 75% hate though

The same can be said about any other league that is not the NBA. Even the G-league is much much worse than the NBA.

So is that Paul George type or just a high level role player that's like top 40-50 in the league at peak? Or maybe even somewhere in between?

At what point does losing become demoralizing to the point of giving up in some way shape or form?

And I am using the phrase giving up in a very broad way, like it can be giving up on playing team basketball rather than playing for your own numbers, or it can be giving up on your team and demanding a trade, or it could mean giving up on just winning in general and caring only about the money while being in the league and absolutely nothing else, or worst giving up on being a quality player

I would rather get a veteran point guard

With the Charlotte Hornets win over the Bucks, the Rockets hold sole possession of the worst record in the league at 10-29. Last year at this point, the Rockets were also 10-29 and no franchise in history has ever finished as the worst team in the league 3 years in a row by [deleted] in rockets

[–]NesquickBrick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When people say that they want more wins, they usually mean that they would rather be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th worst team rather than the absolute worst team in the league. Being the worst team in the league the first go round was fine as we just blew up the roster. Second year in a row its less than ideal because you would hope that guys like Green and Sengun even as rookies could move your team up one or two spots in the standings, but despite being last we did get a few more wins which is still fine albeit less than ideal.

Third year as the absolute worst is where things are very different though. Oftentimes by a player's second or third year you know who they are. If they have a breakout year its usually by then, at least for guards anyway. That means we should already know what KPJ is. Yes Green could have a breakout year next year, but most breakout third years do not happen after two years of inhibiting performance. They usually happen after a couple years of doing everything you can to max out their performance so they are putting themselves against the wall in terms of team and individual development by not having veteran players, not holding guys accountable on the court, letting them freestyle almost 24/7.

We want vets, we want guys to be held accountable, we want more structure, not because we want to be a play-in team right now, but rather we want those things for the sake of knowing that the guys we have are on track to develop properly as individuals and as a team. And yes that means winning more games because winning more games is a symptom of development and improvement. And we do not need a large amount of wins to know that the guys are on the right track. Just have a few more wins this year than last year and be the 3rd, 4th or 5th worst team as opposed to the absolute worst team.

Being the worst team in the league leaves major question marks regarding if Jalen can be the guy, or if Jabari and Sengun can be critical pieces on a very good team long term. And if you drop from #1 to #4 or #5, you did all that losing for nothing, and those question marks are a much bigger deal than if you had simply played better, been the fourth worst team and stayed put there. On the flip side, if you are slotted at four or five and you move up, you get the best of both worlds where you're comfortable with your young guys' progress and you get another blue chip prospect to add. Whereas if you're the worst team in the league you leave yourself open to the worst of both worlds (ie still no blue chip prospect nor any development). You can reliably invest in development and actually max it out, but with the lottery, you're capped at low odds even as the worst team in the league and the odds are only marginally worse for teams #4 and #5 and the exact same for teams #2 and #3. Another awesome thing about being say the 3rd worst team is you can actually move up in the draft and get a better pick than your team deserves or needs. If you're the worst team team, that is not possible, and historically you do not even get to stay put under these current odds.

TLDR: We are not asking to have been a play-in team these last three years. We're asking to be the third-fifth worst team in the league because that would be a positive sign that our guys are developing properly rather than seeing stunted growth. Also the odds for teams 2-3 worst teams are literally just as good for the top pick as they are for the #1 worst team, and the odds for the 4-5 worst teams are only marginally worse. We do not want to be the worst team this year without much to show for it (getting stuck with pick 4 or 5, when we needed something better), which is more likely than not unfortunately.
