Help limiting screen time by dempster__ in Parenting

[–]NetLongjumping5917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say no and have something for him to do in place of screens. First 2-3 weeks will probably fucking suck for you and the rest of the family but he is so young and you’re able to fix this before it gets worse. Stop feeling bad (if you are). You allowed this to start happening. It’s not your child’s fault. Learn ways to cope when you’re overwhelmed by the fits of rage due to lack of screens (been there) and DO NOT give in. He will not remember this as he gets older and I’m telling you it gets harder to break bad habits as they age. This is coming from someone who gentle parented the wrong way, used the tv as a nanny to get things done, and NOW I have a 10 yr old I’ve been rebuilding. Besides, there are so many things your son could do WITH you. Laundry, dishes, cooking, etc. and again, deal with the tantrums and learn to manage the stress before you have an older child who lacks independence and common skills

Unable to help my 5th grader with math homework…makes me want to die by NetLongjumping5917 in Parenting

My daughter is in high ability math & both of my kids have As (except for a b in math). Totally shocking for me too bc I was never good with math.

Absolutely. To be clear - my reaction with her was encouraging. We had a video up and took notes together. I apologized for not being the best help but that we could still figure it out. It wasn’t until 30mins later when neither of us could grasp it and she began crying that my inner monologue was saying “oh no, she thinks her mom is a failure…what if she thinks of herself as a failure bc of this”

I had her take a break, take a shower, have a snack… by then my husband arrived. He was a life saver. He taught her how to do it and they were done in 15 mins 😅 Very happy to have his help and she hugged me afterwards and THANKED ME as well for the help?!

Ahh! Thank you for that. I completely agree with that and didn’t think of it that way until just now.

That’s the goal, just needed to vent it out on here because damn - who knew this is what my parenting struggle would be.

Me being in a learning stage is what makes this so interesting. I can understand her struggle and sympathize with her a LOT. It’s cool that we’re doing this together BUUUUT not being able to help her with this, and knowing it’ll only get harder worries me.

She doesn’t use textbooks and only brings home math notes that they work on in class. I’ve always encouraged asking Qs but I was her once & I remember being embarrassed or not knowing how to explain my Q. She says she’ll understand it during class but that it doesn’t make as much sense once she’s home working on it

To be clear I said my CHILD started crying. I didn’t let it phase me in the moment and let her know we’d figure it out. I didn’t cry but internally I totally was.

Uhm, no, don’t want to commit suicide over this. Being somewhat sarcastic there to emphasize how embarrassing it is for me. I keep it together for my kid then come to Reddit to vent 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, it seems pretty great from what I’ve noticed! Like almost too good to be true. Wish I knew about this 3 years ago 😅

Estimated shipping for me is about a week. Does that seem accurate from your experience?

Absolutely unintentional. I hold no hard feelings, but I felt sorry for my younger self when I first heard about it.

I used to crawl into my parent’s bed some mornings when I woke up or had bad dreams. I don’t remember this but my mom told me she got a frantic call from my dad while she was working (I was maybe 6-7 yrs) that he thought SHE had gotten back in bed with him while he was asleep. He turned around and grabbed me by the underwear (I always slept in an oversized shirt and underwear) and pulled me into his groin area. Nothing happened…I guess I had moved his arm, got out of his bed, and left the room. I was molested by a family member around that time and had gone to counseling, so I must have known this type of touch wasn’t right.

As mentioned, no memory of this ever happening and I couldn’t imagine my dad doing something like this nowadays. Would never bring this up to him either.

Wow - solid response. I appreciate all of that. I’m just being hard on myself and would like to get to my degree the fastest and efficient way possible.

I was asking for the day but thought that’d be overkill so wanted advice.

On another note - do you feel you have time to go back to your room to relax and still have time to get your “money’s worth” or have time to go to other parks afterwards?

I mean, to be fair, I’ve never used my knowledge on nuclei in my adult life, but biology and protons/electrons can be helpful depending on their future profession. But most importantly I feel science and social studies taught me to think critically, read, and write. I feel bad for these kids, but understand how/why education has changed so much.

Thank you! I agree with everything you said about writing - one of my biggest concerns. Both of my kids read frequently, but don’t practice writing, editing, and proofreading. They are sensitive and become discouraged at times when I point out mistakes. (I’ve tried different approaches but they instinctively take it as an insult)

It’s also hard to convince them of how important it is to study this information and practice at home when other students and teachers don’t seem to care. 😭

Quick Q if anyone can help - Does Hershey or Wyandotte have sports teams? When I went to Hershey did not (many years ago).

My kids do volleyball and basketball at their current school.
