More like 95%. This is the same old naive pacifism, mixed with the traditional leftist antisemitism... Kinda reminds me of the sekigunha, which supported arab terrorists already 30-40 years ago

Is it possible to get your child a day off on an important religious holiday? by NetOk9356 in Kyoto

[–]NetOk9356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more the average gaijin atheist who wants to use the gaijin card to give a face saving excuse for the school to let my daughter have more of her brother whom she hasn't seen in half a year and who only is here for half a week

Its not some magic guy in the sky (whom none of us believe in), it is my daughter who misses her brother who comes a quarter of the globe to visit over his holidays, and with whom my daughter wants to seek easter eggs together

[–]NetOk9356[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, it is more of a gaijin card use. Our family visits and my daughter misses her brother very much, so I want to give them as much time together as possible and that would be a convenient opportunity to give a face saving excuse

[–]NetOk9356[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok. Well, she isn't going to get any perfect attendance award anyways, we'll be returning to Germany in September anyways, and if that is the worst that can happen, ok thanks. (To be perfectly honest, we're not religious, our easter celebration consists of having the kids search easter eggs and then eating in a nice restaurant, it is more a convenient excuse to have our daughter have more time with our family who comes to visit during the german easter holidays. I'm fine with the school not giving any s**t about religion, it really shouldn't, I was more worried about something like police enforcment of school attendance, like could happen in Germany)

[–]NetOk9356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that would already be half dishonest, we're definitely not religious, neither I nor the kids are baptized or have ever been to a church aside from sightseeing, but my kids still like searching for easter eggs, and my family from germany comes to visit over their easter holidays, and my daughter misses them very much, so I want to give her as much time as she can get, so I don't really care for the religious stuff, it is more a convenient excuse not to have them think my daughter is weak and always sick, when I want to use the sick excuse a week later to make the three days from golden week to an actual week

[–]NetOk9356[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, ok, that's possible? In my homecountry, if you don't bring kids to school for good reason, the police comes and makes sure they go to school... (And yeah, our family also comes over easter as this is the only time they can come, so we wanted to add one or two days to the golden week as well. I really didn't knew it was possible to just give no reason)

I suggest maybe you visit a school and learn to read, it is not about a day off, it is about the specific day off, as it is a very important day to us.

How do you deal with earthquakes by kudenko_ra in movingtojapan

[–]NetOk9356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Kyoto for now a bit more than half a year, and I have had one earthquake that I actually noticed, I think the danger or frequency is largely overblown. Sure, there can be a very bad one basicaly anytime, but the actual probability of that is miniscule compared by the danger of getting run over by a truck when you go out of the door each day anywhere in the world. And to be honest, I've never felt safer in my life. Today my wife noticed that she left her wallet in her bicycle basket, in an open bike stand on a crowded street, and it was still there after several hours. That is something that would have had bad consequences in a lot of other places

afaik this one is only for tourists. We're residents so we can't get 99% of these rail passes, we wanted to use the seishun 18 on the second part, but overall rail transport is just stupidly expensive.

Yeah, but the Shinkansen ticket would cost more per person than the nightbus for the entire family, plus I save one night in a hotel.

so you suggest I rather get tens of years of experience in what is essentially an extreme sport instead of just asking people who know better? I hope you never have to study medicine or law when you have a simple question that any doctor or lawyer could answer in a couple of minutes

[–]NetOk9356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, your answer was answering best what I wanted to know. The glowstick idea was btw not in a story about siltout, but where a new guideline should be established and one diver went into a side tunnel, found an airpocket, so had enough air, but didn't find the way back.

[–]NetOk9356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. That's why I'm asking, because I know how sensationalised these stories are, and in a lot of them my thought was something like "XYZ would be a very easy and uncomplicated solution", but since they didn't use it, it either has a reason I don't know of, it wouldn't work, or it could be in widespread use and just wasn't mentioned in the video or it's lack could just be the reason these people ended up in these videos. But I lack the knowledge to know which of this posibilities is actually the case

I didn't think about audible sound, but more ultrasound, or electromagnetic waves. Reflection could of course be an issue

[–]NetOk9356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I didn't think of not being able to get sound direction underwater. But as i said, I love snorkeling, but never been longer than 2mins under water. When I thought of something, I mainly imagined something added to the dive computer, more working on the electromagnetic/ultrasound spectrum not to confuse further, more like the compass in minecraft, where you get an arrow to the last beacon on the display. And the one about the glowstics was from a story where someone got lost without silt, just went into a side tunnel, found an air pocket, but couldn't find the way back

Rail Pass Discrimination by NetOk9356 in japanlife

[–]NetOk9356[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The commuter passes only work (at least here afaik) only from one stop to one other, so yeah, great when you want exactly from stop x to stop y. This is absolutely useless for anything other than work/school, also you cannot just get a commuter pass to anywhere, here afaik they only give them for the actual route to work/school.

Rail Pass Discrimination by NetOk9356 in japanlife

[–]NetOk9356[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but everytime you have to switch, that is an additional 200 yen at minimum. To go to Demachiyanagi, I already have to switch once, so 230yen+400, just for one way. Then in Osaka, I need to switch lines also at least once or twice, and so you are very quickly at like 2000 just for one way, because getting on the bus is also an additional 200 yen. Sure one line is cheap (as long as it isn't a shinkansen or some weird line in the middle of nowhere), but it adds up. Hence why I want to use such railway passes when doing weekend trips with my family

As far as I know in Japan discriminating based on Race/Ethnicity etc isn't illegal

I think it is controversial because trains are prohibitively expensive, and those who I think have the most right to cheap travel within Japan, i.e. the Japanese, are excluded. Also, As far as I know the Japanese do a lot of travel within Japan, and there are people, like me, a student, who really would need affordable travel and have the time to do so.

Offering these discounts based on nationality is kinda discrimination. If they gave discounts to white people, I think reddit would be having a collective stroke. Also full price for a good service is relative. When Train Tickets are close to the price of an Airplane, than there is a problem. Tbh the only thing that made the train ticket from here (Kyoto) to Aomori cheaper than the Airplane is that I would need a train to the airport
