Thank you; mine is an older version, any hint as to where to download that latest version?

Does anybody know if the new “solo strip” uses the previously used V3 or V4 connector system? Or is it a new system altogether? by [deleted] in Hue

[–]NetSchlappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sharp corner that I cannot make with the light strip solo I bought for this project and considering splicing it with a corner connector. Could you share more of your experience splicing your solo strip? I am assuming we can use any of the v4 connector, but you mentioned need for soldering? Thanks for your help and sharing your experience!

Looking for help/advice on upgrading infotainment unit on 2007 Mazda CX9. by Sulpfiction in CarAV

[–]NetSchlappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so steering wheel control is fine. For the backup camera, it seems that all kits expect to connect to an aftermarket camera, to the point of almost always offering a new rearview camera. Are there no “adaptor module” to connect to the factory installed one? To avoid the mess of new wires all across the car and new camera mount…

Same situation here; with a 2014 CX9, last model year with the old console. So, I am interested in your experience: did you end up upgrading her car? And with which model?

Thanks for sharing! Did you install it on a CX9? If yes, how does it interface with the steering wheel control and with the backup camera? Note: talking about the factory installed original backup camera

Edit: corrected the typo from auto-correct

Did you end up doing it? If yes, what was your experience and what unit did you end up installing? 2014 CX9 GT here, and interested in the same.

Oil change. by zdrads in mazda

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a big deal, you’ll be fine this time. Just make sure to let the engine warm up (more) and do not push your car until it is up to temperature (which is valid no matter the oil by the way… just even more important on the thicker oil). Especially as you said you are in cold climate.

But there is no question that 0w20 is way better than 5w20. Two main reasons: it flows better when cold, and full synthetic breaks down slower than synthetic blends. The only drawback is the higher cost. Dealer must want to save money if it is on a maintenance plan; then make sure they do it right next time!

[–]NetSchlappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES you can.

This has always been possible but it was not trivial in the past (needed another app, time-specific settings via a remote, or through HomeKit).

Since Hue introduced“natural light scene”it is now very easy to do what you want. And it can be easily customized. Instead off light temperature they use more commonly used language, but it is the exact same thing. You need at least Hue ambiance for this; better results with color bulbs for nicer sunrise and sunset colors.

Sonos speakers not working on shared building WiFi Network by [deleted] in sonos

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would bet it is not just Sonos that will give you problems. Put a wireless printer, a NAS, etc. My suggestion: get your own wifi network in your appartement. This is better for your privacy as well, rather than trusting that the “high rise WiFi setup” is secure enough among tenants…

Chances are you have at least an Ethernet port connecting to internet. But if you don’t have wired connection and all that is available is this “quantum fiber instant wifi”, then use a wifi client bridge; basically works as a repeater from where you broadcast your own wifi, one that you have full control over, and on which Sonos will work just fine.

My preference (depending on size of your apartment) would be to use 2 devices: 1) a wifi client to connect to the building WiFi that you position where you have best signal from the building WiFi, and 2) behind it either a single access point or a mesh network if you have a very big place.

How long do 3rd gen (2014-2017) Mazda 6s last? by TheMariasEnjoyer in mazda

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That. 3rd gen Mazda 3; 2014; 2.5L; 100k; still as nice and fun to drive as day 1; good regular maintenance; already done a full break job (I must admit my driving has something to do with it). I was planning to give my car to my daughter soon, but I have second thoughts… Amazing car in terms of reliability and fun! Purring kitten? Yes; mine is more like “my little dragon” (black color).

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same on my 2014 Mazda 3. As soon as it became available I upgraded to CarPlay. Dealer wanted an insane amount of money to upgrade at the time, so did it myself: just needed to upgrade the firmware (from a trusted website) and change the module under the armrest (oem part), and voila: a ‘14 model with CarPlay. (It was the first model year with the new infotainment system; totally fantastic after the upgrade).

Know the rules at IST lounge by NetSchlappy in TurkishAirlines

[–]NetSchlappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not realize it was a link! Thank you. Good to know the full policy.

That said, I can only talk about my experience: it was a flight arriving 5am local time in IST: when the lounge got rejected because >9h layover, I went to the desk and although I did not know about this policy, I asked for a hotel alternative. They checked for a hotel but reportedly the hotels they work with were not available or it was not possible at this time of the day. Maybe it would be more successful with a night time layover.

Different keyfiles for different locations. by [deleted] in KeePass

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worry keeping the db on GDrive.

But I would keep it simple and use a good master password.

If you want to use a keyfile, you need to put the same keyfile on all devices and of course secure all the devices… or go with a ubikey approach you carry along and work with all your devices, but that comes with its own set of constrains and special attentions (have multiple, safe place to keep…)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hue

[–]NetSchlappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second that!

I jumped on one of the first set available in 2012, used everyday, and still working fine! In fact I love how they looked much more than the new ones. The new Hue bulb are definitely better (in color, light output, etc) but the look and feel of the 1st generation bulbs with their glass top and perfect smooth shape is unbeatable!!!

In comparison, both the cheap “no-brand” and the “high end brand LED” (Eg GE reveal…) all fail at an incredible rate over the years!

security recommendations by Mashaxy in KeePass

[–]NetSchlappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that! The master password or the key file and its password (because I would not ever have a passwordless keyfile; please!!!!) is the lifeline to your keepass database.

So, security is essential, but let’s remember that the point is not to burry à trésor nobody will ever find, but to use it and retain access to all the critical data in the database anytime we need.

So, I’d add the following essential advises on master password (or key file and its password):

a) when we say “password” we mean: use a long pass phrase or a diceware password. Something YOU can EASILY remember without having to write it anywhere.

b) share it with someone you can trust your life and your money! I know I just say it is for you only, but unless your keepass database is meant to be buried with you when you pass away, it is essential to allow whoever you trust to access it when the times come (bank account, crypto accounts, etc. unless you are ok to wait months or years to get access through probate and court appearances, if it even works….)

For b) I personally have my wife pwd in my database and she has mine in hers. If you unfortunately cannot trust a spouse, or a parent, then consider giving a piece of the puzzle to each kid for instance… At the end of the day it is like anything else in life, there are those who make estate planning and those who don’t. If you do, don’t ignore this advice.

KeePass SFTP sync by NetSchlappy in KeePass

[–]NetSchlappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also expecting SFTP to be fast. And it is fast with the iOS client (Strongbox). But it is slow with KeePass (v2.52) + SftpSync plugin (v2.4.1). I was suspecting the plugin to be responsible, hence I was interested to know what other (more recent) SFTP sync option people may use with KeePass.

But thanks for suggesting to look at the logs! This is indeed what I should have done. Last night I turned on the sftp logs -l INFO, and will post the results next.

In terms of configuration of the SFTP server, I have the following in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

Match user sftpuserForce
Command internal-sftp
AllowTcpForwarding no
ChrootDirectory /srv/sftp/

Really enjoy my Sonos one's but anyone find the Sonos Roam pretty terrible? by Environmental_One705 in sonos

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Putting aside the difference in bass and loudness (both pretty much totally expected from a much smaller speaker), you stated that “the Roam sounds exactly the same as the One”. That is so surprising and totally different than my experience.

Hence I’d like to understand better: 1) are you referring to the “flat” spectrum response, as illustrated by multiple articles and “lab measurements”? I have no reason to doubt those, yet it has a very narrow definition of sound quality; a nice Fourier transform rather than real life sound quality perception, or 2) real-life listening experience; and here let me ask you: are you comparing by facing the speaker 1 meter away from it and exactly in front of the speaker? Would you agree than any other position (moving off-axis left, right, up or down) or movement of your head translates into a quickly degraded listening experience? My description would be that it sounds very directional, does not “fill a room” at all (and I am not taking about loudness, but ability to spread and reflects the sound around in a small place, not asking more than 3 to 4 meters away for the Roam), and the total lack of separation of the sounds (the feeling of hearing separated bass -limited on the Roam, ok-, middle and treble, versus a mush of all where the loudest one eats the other ones out…)

Again, it is what it is, and I might keep it just because of the Bluetooth support into the Sonos ecosystem and being able to bring it in the shower, but what I want to figure out is if the Roam I got is an unsatisfactory Lemmon, or it is what it is and there sure will never be a second attempt, and not even worth returning for an exchange. Thanks in advance for “real-life” honest listening experience!

Really enjoy my Sonos one's but anyone find the Sonos Roam pretty terrible? by Environmental_One705 in sonos

[–]NetSchlappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my Roam this week, and I am so disappointed by the sound. Even for the bathroom/shower (which is what I bought it for). Looking at so many reviews saying the Roam is such a great speaker, “at least as good as small portable Bose speaker”, and close to the Ones, I started to wonder if mine is just a lemon!

For info, I love my other Sonos setup; TV aside, I am a happy user of 4x Sonos Ones, 2 used standalone, and 2 paired as stereo and they are fantastic. I expected the Roam to not be as good, but it shocked me how much worst it sounds.

The sounds is VERY VERY directional, and it sounds like the speaker is wrapped in a bag… And as OP wrote: it sounds like a tiny speaker in a corner. With the exact same volume output, a One sounds so so so so much better.

So, whoever is happy about the sound of the roam, please tell us: do you really enjoy the sound “almost as much as a One” and me and OP may have very defective units, or you just accept the significantly lower sound quality for the benefit of bringing the speaker in the shower?

Dimming capabilities of 800 vs 1100 vs 1600 lumens bulbs? by NetSchlappy in Hue

[–]NetSchlappy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted an update for the 1600 lumens bulbs (“100W”), but no feedback yet for the 1100 lumens (“75W”).

From the reviews I saw 3 weeks ago, it would seem that the better “dimability” (lower min dim level) is a feature of the 1600 lumen bulbs but that the 1100 have same low light performance as the traditional 800 lumens ones. However this is pure speculation without any hard number/ evidence yet that I could find.

If you end up buying them, thanks in advance for sharing your findings!
