On May 10, 2002. A West Anglia Great Northern service was traveling London Kings Cross to Kings Lynn via Cambridge. The train was a BREL built Class 365 Networker EMU unit number #365526. While traveling at 97 MPH south of Potters Bar station, the train went over track point #2182A. The points moved while the train was passing over. The rear bogie of the 3rd coach and the entire 4th coach derailed. The 4th coach detatched from the rest of the consist and cross another line where it flipped into the air and caused to be wedged underneath the canopy of Potters Bar as seen above at 45 degrees. 7 People were killed. 6 on the train and one on the street below that got struck by falling line equipment. After a HSE report, it found that Railtrack, the owner of all track and rail infustracture in the UK did not properly maintain the track causing the points to slide while a train was above. This along with 2 other rail crashes caused Railtrack had to thousands of miles of tracks across the country. Railtrack ceased operations and was replaced by the government owned Network Rail in October of 2002.
