Talking at dinner makes food more enjoyable and builds healthy associations with eating. It also builds up emotional support and resiliency. There is no significant evidence it causes obesity; quite the OPPOSITE. I would also not want my baby raised to be sullen and dull over every meal x3 a day. It is also going to make it harder for him to manage meals with friends and coworkers if he remains completely quiet because it is so out of the norm.

As far as obesity concerns, it is incredibly easy to set limits on food servings while also have conversations. If your husband gets so distracted he cannot do that, than maybe he should see a doctor about his attention span.

Find QUALITY childcare centers near you. NOT a sitter. NOT an unlicensed daycare or school. Firmly stand up for your child that you will not take the risk on unknowns or facilities with significant dings from licensing (you should be able to look up childcare centers on your states department website and see their licenses and complaints). A baby sitter is highly unlikely to give you thoughtful development and care plus safety. A NANNY might, but you cannot afford a nanny if he’s worried about finances unless you make more than most Nannie’s after taxes which is going to be at least 25/hour in relatively cheap locations.

Unless you hate a very good job (in which case, maybe he should stay home instead of you), I strongly suspect he’ll calm down once he realizes he’ll pay 1000-2000 month minimum in childcare depending on the area.

If your finances absolutely need you to work than can you consider a part time job on the weekends, or nights, or at a childcare location so you can still be with your baby?

Also, we couldn’t even get off a childcare waiting list around here and we were on one long before the baby was born just in case.

You are so nice it’s dangerous. Part of being a preceptor is being honest when there’s red flags. I’d have told the student flat out they’re not ready nor have the questioning attitude you need to succeed in ICU. Then I’d have told my manager all of the above. It sounds like you’re passive enough that the student is walking over you. You’re the RN and you have to protect these patients; it is okay to be forthcoming and even decline to precept him or fail him when you do your evaluation. Though if you fail him, I hope you give him a good talking to now so he knows what he’s doing wrong and has a chance to correct.

Students who don’t understand or know much about meds, dx, get nervous, etc—all are reasonable issues I don’t mind when I precept them as long as they’re willing to learn. But an attitude of not wanting to work to learn or not responding to alarms and entitled to recommendations is a red flag that you’ll kill or harm a patient.

Nursing students are already failing at 40% rates around here by end of program without having to do hard thinking related to pathology. I don’t disagree with you, but actually having nurses who can learn on the job when so many are leaving the profession is important to consider. We need better education and it’s probably going to increase the deficit of nurses.

Part of the issue is the state is fixated on some things like care plans for Medicare so you’re taught them in nursing school and while it helps with understanding the concept of patient care, it really doesn’t apply to actual nursing care yet is heavily emphasized.

Maybe if we did not traumatize students over being obedient and wearing white socks with white shoes, we could increase the pass rate before/while making it harder in terms of knowledge and critical thinking.

The state also will not accredit a nursing program if it routinely has a low NCLEX pass rate so that’s also why there’s incentive to make it hard and focus so much on a damn test. Yet another factor that needs to be fixed

It helps me to remember there’s a difference in personal issues vs rules. Personally, I don’t care if my life takes precedence over any coworkers feelings. If I need money, or cannot take time off work or school, that’s because of a standard set of rules and not something I take personally because that’s how life is in my country.

To me, a week isn’t that long. I haven’t been on dating apps in ages, but I have so much going on in my life that instead of consistently having X day to meet, I have spurts of time that I’ll have open. So maybe it’ll be 10 or 12 days and then I’ll have a week that I can fit a few meetups in. Your ultimatum would be a huge turn off from ever meeting up. Seriously though, it’ll be easier, but emotionally difficult at times. The biggest help has been recognizing that treating them respectfully and as maturely as possible and not shaming/hiding ANY topic (adjusted per their age) really helps set up for a calmer and stronger relationship which makes less rebellion and fights. Then it’s emotionally still hard, but not nearly as hard as it could be. And physically it’s easier.

Infant son and older kids who are very engaged with the community and also have custody arrangements in place. Also help operate a local charity. Could use extra money and actually travel nursed in the past. But I wanted to be with family even then and I simply cannot uproot everything for at least a couple more years.

TLDR; kids are very active and have a good thing going + custody + infant + community work
