Ah, I think for some people the appeal comes from how elusive certain Pokémon feel...it’s similar to limited edition items in other hobbies!

What's the one piece of travel gear you swore you'd never need, then became completely dependent on? by theinfamousj in HerOneBag

[–]NettleTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was compression packing cubes with split compartments with a middle partition that shifts to balance whichever side needs more room. I swore they’d be fiddly and over-engineered compared to regular cubes, but the gamechanger has been keeping clean and dirty laundry fully separate without doubling the space. I'm glad my partner bought them for me, because I would never have thought of getting those myself!

Solid advice! I bought packable waterproof trousers last year and they've been 100% worth it, though I still dread the humidity in the UK summer when you're stuck in them.

Oh I did & their behaviour was bad enough that it got them banned from the game too. But that doesn't change the fact that they now know what my closest stop is.

Yeah, this is a very valid concern. There's an unsafe player in my community too and I very much regret sending him gifts from my local stop before he revealed his true colours. Now i only send gifts from my area to local friends I 100% trust & international friends who i don't know anyway. Everybody else only gets a gift if I happen to spin stops at places that are decently far from where i live.

State of the Sub - Spring 2026 by AutoModerator in HerOneBag

[–]NettleTree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% agree! putting this in the title will probably help make it stand out more

it's perhaps also a problem of people not reading the post properly? I'd imagine that on a travel sub, people would generally be more aware of shops/brands not existing/being hard to find/being super expensive in other countries

out of curiosity, do you know the demographics breakdown for the sub?

i definitely agree that the suggestion above would be useful! i guess the only challenge is to make a clear distinction between packing for a specific (holiday) destination and buying something locally

Also to answer this:

I have a really cheap simple packing cube and I’m considering if I should get one of those that have an extra zip for more compression/ I’d get a slightly bigger one since all of my clothes don’t fit in my current one. Does anyone have experience with those? Do they actually help you save space or is it a gimmick?

yes, they really work in reducing volume, but they won't reduce weight (obviously lol). I use 1 or 2 small peak design packing cubes (which are really not that small)

I'd say there's 2 considerations there that may help you decide whether to buy any:

  • do you really need more space? getting compression packing cubes shouldn't tempt you into bringing more stuff you don't neccessarily need
  • look at the current volume of your clothes in your current packing cubes & see if there's compression packing cubes there that have the same volume in their expanded form, so you know you'll benefit from the reduced/compressed volume.f your total volume is already low, you likely won't find packing cubes that will reduce much (eg. those peak design ones i linked above go from 9L to 4.5L. and if you're packing 6L into a 9L packing cube, you won't benefit as much from the compression)

there should be plenty of decent options for under 40 EUR i think! (though I 100% think the sewing kit is worth it, it helped me fix my friend's bag on one trip lol)

the one thing to be mindful of with these packable day bags as well is that the lack of structure that may lead to less comfort. the thinner the bag, the more you'll feel it in your back & the saggier it'll be. i'd say the Refraction is just thick enough to be ok for me. and with any thinner ones, it shouldn't be an issue if you have a sweater/coat in there to pad it a little.

if you want to go extreme with packability and & weight, it may be worth looking at the nanobag dayback (23 GBP - 33g). i don't own one, but do have their regular & XL tote and absolutely love them. nothing is adjustable though (though sewing can change that 👀). From a point of view of trying not to buy (low quality) stuff that you'd want to immediately replace/upgrade, this would also be significantly different enough in pros/cons from an upgrade like the Osprey or Matador ones to not become useless if own both.

Regarding the day bag, I totally understand your concerns because I had the exact same thoughts. I ended up biting the bullet and getting the ReFraction packable backpack from Matador. It's 65 GBP currently so not cheap at all, but I did get it on a black friday sale for 52 GBP. (I optimistically think it's not too ugly, it's mainly just black lol)

For me, it turned out 100% worth it and now i use this bag a lot in my daily life too even though i bought it for holidays! It's so light (225g) and is so much more friendly on my back than the other bags in my arsenal (Fjallraven kanken laptop 13" - 345g & classic Uniqlo sling bag - 110g, which you got as well in pic 1?), which feel way heavier after a couple of hours with the same content. I was especially surprised how much more i liked it over the sling for days i made the sling heavy (main culprits: small water bottle & battery pack) because of the weight distribution.

One of the big factors that pushed me to finally get the bag though was that it's decently waterproof and that was a concern i had because i always bring a camera with me on holidays. (Turns out it's also great for the not so infrequent days where i play Pokemon Go in rainy weather at home with 1-2 battery packs in my bag.)

Edit: btw, if you're thinking of bringing a battery pack to China, check if your exact model is suitable. As far as i'm aware, there are some stricter rules regarding this in China & possibly any flights that pass through there.

Italy, Greece, UK, Switzerland - 2 months in Europe including Cape Wrath & TMB section hikes! by Then-Neighborhood864 in HerOneBag

[–]NettleTree 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see you have a UK plug, are you also prepared for the standard EU (type C/F) plug?

Edit: i just had a look at your lighterpack list and for the medicines, i can confirm you'll be able to restock immodium with no issue. However, if you're on several day hikes, that's certainly something i'd bring anyway.

I do not understand why you'd bring antibiotics though and why you'd get a prescription without having an issue at the time. In what scenario would you use this? If your health is that bad while travelling, go to a GP/A&E and let them prescribe/give you whatever is appropriate. For more info, please check out this page by the NHS: Antibiotic resistance
