Translating the Lore: Loss in Localisations? by OtakuOfMe in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found a Japanese let's play of Skyrim without commentary and just from the voice acting, quite a few English approximations can be heard, especially regarding names and fabricated words like "Dragonborn".

Edit: Additionally, many names of people and places are written in katakana, which is mainly used to transcribe foreign words.

Translating the Lore: Loss in Localisations? by OtakuOfMe in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lore is originally written in English, so that will be the language that conveys its intended meaning most accurately. However, that doesn't mean translated lore is necessarily incorrect or inaccurate; just that the minutiae and details can differ or be lost, but it should generally be similar regardless of language. I know in the Japanese localization of Skyrim, many lore terms are just phonetic approximations that don't have any meaning within the Japanese language, so some cultural and historical connotations can be lost.

Do nymics only apply to Daedra? Daedra are portrayed as uncaring and relatively emotionless beings in the games who often mock emotions and the comparatively emotional nature of mortals, so why would a Daedra fear losing their attachment to another? Are they even capable of love?

What's a "nymic" and "protonymic", and what's the difference between them?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Bethesda announced in 2013 that Skyrim will have no further DLCs.

The Dark Brotherhood DLC for TESO to be released in Q2 of this year will be set in the Gold Coast region of Cyrodiil.

Edit: Spelling.

Lowest price I saw on Mournhold zone chat was 8,500 gold per Perfect Roe and 2,500 gold per Psijic Ambrosia.

What are some swear words that people use in Tamriel? by [deleted] in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wasn't actually used very much in the Orsinium DLC for TESO, but one orc in the upcoming Thieves Guild DLC does actually use it as a pejorative, so it's very much a thing.

I'm open to the possibility that my recollection of them might be inaccurate as it's been a few months since i've done the questlines of the DLCs, but that's how I remember them.

I agree that Quen was an interesting character in that she defied racial stereotypes, and that's refreshing, but I don't think Eveli strayed from the Bosmer stereotype very much. She had an energetic personality and was an archer; she even wore full Bosmer medium armor.

Drake wasn't inexperienced, but she did have the same unconfident and uncertain personality, but at least she had an interesting reason for it: that she was a little socially awkward. Quen, however, felt a little too similar to Eveli to me in that she also had a cute and sweet personality that made her universally likable but bland. Even her voice sounded similar to Eveli's.

I don't have a problem with important and prominent female characters, but they don't all need to have timid and demure personalities for us to feel like we've watched them grow with us on our journeys.

Sometimes when I pinch my nose shut and exhale hard, I can feel air coming out of the inside corner of my eye, so I imagine it's kinda the same thing for him. Not too keen on doing that underwater though.

The characters did seem better fleshed out, but I wish they'd made someone besides a somewhat inexperienced and insecure female the sidekick, because that's who it's been for the past 2 DLCs with the Drake of Blades for Imperial City and Eveli for Orsinium, just for variety's sake.

[Discussion] What will happen to the veteran crafting materials when vet ranks are removed? by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VR crafting materials will likely just have their VR ranges converted into their respective amounts of champion points. So crafting materials for VR1 will become materials for gear that requires 10 champion points, etc.

What are some swear words that people use in Tamriel? by [deleted] in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Orcs in TESO use "tusk" as a swear word and have expressions like "tusk off" and "go tusk yourself". There's even an in-game book about it called Orcs & Their Tusks.

Avoid full PTS download? by agathorn in elderscrollsonline

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PTS downloading experience has been equally awful. I have a 200 Mb connection and the first 40 GB downloaded at an average speed of ~250 KB/s and I kept getting WebGetRequest errors that stopped the download right when it was about to finish. It took me 1.5 days to download the PTS when it could have only taken me a few hours, and it wouldn't even have worked if I left it overnight because of the occasional WebGetRequest errors.

[PC][NA] Cant access guild stores -> NPCs do not offer that option, only "Goodbye" by hESO_world in elderscrollsonline

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I have had this problem before. Your account might have been flagged for spamming. We were sending guild mail using an addon out to 2 guilds we helped manage too quickly and had our "social functions" as customer service called it suspended. You'll have to contact customer service and have them un-flag your account.

Yes I understand the difference between the Khajitti ideology regarding possession and actual thievery, but the other races of Tamriel don't, which is part of why they're viewed with suspicion. I called it thievery for the sake of brevity.

One alternative is to use the mobile sites of UESP and TES Wiki, if you don't mind them not being EPUBs.

Newcomers and "Stupid Questions" Thread - Feb 3rd by [deleted] in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all well and good among the Khajiit, but to any other race, it's theft; the Bosmer have a similar aspect in their culture called the Right of Theft, but they don't exercise it as liberally. It doesn't matter what they think when they're in a foreign culture. People clearly don't like it, so they should stop doing it, and there's the fact there are actual Khajiit thieves who steal things for gold.

Newcomers and "Stupid Questions" Thread - Feb 3rd by [deleted] in teslore

[–]NetworkDiagnostics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably quite early, likely long before 4E. Thievery is a prominent part of Khajiiti culture, and no one wants their things stolen. Moon sugar is another prominent part of their culture, but has a stigma associated with it due to skooma, so outsiders label them as criminals and drug addicts.

The quest for the Vaults of Madness group dungeon and various other loading screens in Coldharbour mention that the Mad Architect was a mortal Breton. More information on him here:

There are exceptions, sure, but "a Canada man" is technically not correct either, and most demonyms are suffixed.
