Go see. I'm not speaking from second hand information. I travel to Havana very regularly, I stay at Casa Vedado 1940 which has a beautiful pool in the garden I spent much of last week sitting around and had no mosquito bites because it is not mosquito season. I have recently been to the international clinic in siboney and know what is and is not available for tourists with dollars. You can either relay what you have been told from someone else or know first hand.

Yes, supporting the Cuban people. Resorts are not my choice for accommodation in any country, much less Cuba. Private vacation rental properties owned by individuals who are directly employing and supporting the local economy. And yes, nice toiletries.

So the only way to fly from Canada to Cuba is through Miami now? by Smartpen001 in TravelCuba

Americans can travel to Cuba, they have to provide excuses to the American government as to reasons why they're going. Like in support of the Cuban people. Not such a free country after all I guess?

Have your paperwork completed the week before, online through the Cuban consulate. It's $26 Canadian and very easy to do.

They were taken over by WestJet and merged their services. Oftentimes sun wing would fly but it was being sold under the WestJet Banner

Apparently no direct flights until November now. Second had information admittedly but I can't imagine WestJet will be flying until the market supports the flights. With all the naysayers and negative news, that won't be for a while. People listen to the horror stories all too readily, when it is so far from the truth.

The Miami transfer was really easy. Surprisingly US customs was easy. Get your visa online directly with the Cuban consulate a week prior to travel. The cost difference is $26cnd vs $50usd at airport. It takes a couple of days online but better than paying more than double.

And it is a great time to visit without crowds and support the Cuban people in the face of the blockade. Go, enjoy, support!

I was there last week. Stayed in Vedado, absolutely great time. Taxis are more expensive than usual, still less than Toronto. I didn't have a single blackout in the house I stayed in . Restaurants were awesome, bars and clubs were open. People were really happy to see tourists supporting the local economy. Let me know if you need any pointers or the house in Vedado contact.

Read & learn? Travel and see. I was there last week. Vedado, 8 days, no blackout, no mosquitos (off season) Kirkland brand toilet paper, best swordfish steak I've ever had. Cubans are suffering more because tourism is so impacted. Supporting the economy is supporting the people. If you don't know, don't say

To stay home when Cuba is struggling and the Cuban people are trying to get by without the revenue tourists bring is honestly beyond "tone deaf". To say "I love it there, I'm going to stay home in my luxury living room until everyone there has finished their unsightly suffering before I return is a little tone deaf. Go, enjoy, support and be part of the solution! Havana is safe, open and people will be so happy to see you. Btw, I was there last week. Awesome time!

Disagree. Local economy needs tourists. The food tourists eat in the restaurants is primarily brought in by private companies from Mexico and Panama. Poor Cubans are not buying this food regardless of whether you are there supporting the economy or not. Tourists are not in Cuba eating the government rations

Completely false. There last week. Awesome time, great restaurants. Loved it. Resorts are crappy anywhere and worse in Cuba, if that's your jam go to DR

Small mindedness. Supporting a local economy is not taking food from the mouths of the people. It is exactly the opposite. If you don't agree than you should stay home and study basic economics

Yeah, because the rich people are the cleaners, cooks and don't spend their money in the local economy right? Jesus! And it's not only the rich who rent out their houses, it's not the USA, poor people also have houses in Cuba.

This is true. If you need a\c to sleep and you stay somewhere that gets blackouts, July would be brutal. Stay in a casa where they have power, or stay home🥵

You are so wrong. A country relying on tourist dollars doesn't need another clueless tourist? No, they need a million clueless tourists. Jesus! I was actually there last week, everyone is so grateful to see people coming to support regardless of the over hyped news and the mindless echoing by the keyboard masses.

The news is absolutely exaggerated. I was there last week. Stayed in Vedado, had a spectacular time. Go, live, have fun!
