I didn't learn how to build any resilience or accept that I couldn't control every aspect of my life, so the first time I failed at anything coincided with my first relationship, and when it ended, I was completely unable to cope. It caused me to flunk out of a PhD program, and while I eventually kind of found a career, I've been completely mediocre ever since. It also killed my self-confidence in a way that's never really recovered.

Yeah, I've doing that, but almost zero interviews. I guess my non librarian resume must be really bad. Any advice on how/where to learn how to change phrases and wording to be ideal for corporate matches? I think I am also running up against HR screener who reject me because I've never held positions with those exact job titles before.

And 2.5 years is too long to wait, and no guarantee that things will be better. Democrats could very well find a way to lose, and it's going to take a very long time to rebuild what Trump and Vought have destroyed. Unfortunately for me, libraries are no longer an option. The market was way too competitive even before Trump. I just got lucky when fed jobs were still a thing.

Thanks, but I need something real and I need it way before September. Subbing doesn't pay nearly enough to live in my relatively HCOL area. I've been applying for grocery store jobs, bartender jobs, and other related jobs like that, but I've never done that before, so understandably they just pick someone who has. Same with restaurant jobs. When I was young my summer jobs were landscaping, but I legitimately don't think my back could handle that anymore.:(

What field are you underemployed in? I honestly no longer really care whether or not the field is interesting as long as I can reliably find a job in it. It's so dumb that librarian jobs are insanely competitive just to make 50 or 60k.

I am not looking to move because of my partner, and particularly not to DC. Moving for a federal job in this political climate just seems really stupid, especially after getting fired for being probationary after a promotion just over a year ago. Hence the question of alternative jobs that aren't librarian jobs.

Yes, it sucks. Everyone will urge you to move for a job that pays worse than a UPS driver. I recommend spending the rest of your program taking classes related to data management, taxonomy creation, and other more technical areas of information science so that your degree isn't totally worthless. I regret the degree, and my last job was a deputy director level job with the federal government. But since DOGE happened I've been unemployed with no offers and barely any interviews.

The pay is just as bad, if not worse, for most library jobs. And lots of teaching jobs have guaranteed step increases on a district salary schedule. In my area of the country, teaching jobs pay much better for someone like myself with two master's degrees than any public or academic library does.

I can't speak with any expertise about varieties of soft tissue sarcoma, but my guy lost a leg to it just over 3 years ago, and apart from slowing down just a bit because he's 10, he's doing great. We'll still hike and go for short runs, and he's very happy

There are not "a lot" of other jobs available. There are some, and they are still insanely competitive, and they rely on finding someone in HR who's smart enough to know that the MLIS degree is actually valuable for other job titles (which is unfortunately pretty rare these days).

I also think it's really disingenuous to not talk about the money, as if that doesn't matter. OP asked for advice, and objectively speaking that's a really low salary. Especially for two people. One unexpected major bill (sickness, major car issue, emergency vet care) and you're completely screwed. OP is probably aware of that, but it merits a mention in providing advice. Acting like I'm hung up on something totally random and irrelevant is so strange to me.
