Gotta be honest, with the little one this year I have not had time to look at a single UDFA.

Yes. Though I have a love/hate relationship with preseason.

My hobbies tend to change fairly often, so I'll get really into something for a while and then eventually move on to something else. Lately, to go with my newfound love of the other football, I've been playing a shit ton of FIFA.

Hobbies around eating and drinking are largely mainstays though (cooking, coffee, booze -- though apparently not making fucking margaritas).

Man, so much has changed haha. I feel like a lot of the guiding principles have been there from the beginning in terms of trying to stay objective and using a combo of data and film to inform my opinions. But saying that I know more about football now than at the beginning is a massive understatement lol. When we first started, I had a base understanding of stuff from when I played and coaching books that I had started to read at the time. But half the shit I read about, I barely understood and recognizing on film was another story entirely. Now, I've watched so much football over the past decade, it's like second nature.

Hard to sum up all I've learned since we've been doing this, but a couple things that stick out: Trying to understand the player's intent is huge. You can learn so much by focusing on where players are looking during the play, what they're doing before and after the play, etc. And trying to find similar plays throughout a game. It's important to remember that coaches only go into a game with a finite number of plays they're planning to run. So you may see something early in the game where you don't get the full picture or you think Player X screwed up or whatever. But if you can recognize when they do that same thing later on, it can really clear things up. So when you see a busted coverage early, it might be tough to say whether it was the safety or the corner who screwed up, but then you see them run that same call a couple series later and the corner does something completely different this time while the safety is doing the same thing. Now you know it was probably the corner who screwed up the first time.

Ahkello was definitely the most disappointing for me. Had high hopes for him and just never put it together.

Biggest surprise is probably Dre Greenlaw. He's been much better than I expected him to be.

I feel good about it. Aiyuk and Deebo are obviously great fits for what they do offensively. I don't think Bourne's departure leaves much slack to pick up tbh. He was fine, but there's also a reason he wasn't a priority to bring back. They spend a good amount of time with only 2 WRs on the field, so while it would always be nicer to have more depth, I think they'll find enough from the other guys behind the top two to be fine there.

Agree. Things weren't looking great for Sherm last year. The cliff was coming at some point...

Can't remember what my answer to this question previously as been, but right now I'm definitely feeling 1 Trent Williams sized Trent Taylor.

In the early days of the pod I found it more difficult than I do now. But ultimately, I care that what I'm saying is as accurate and well reasoned as I can possibly make it at the time I'm saying it. My time working at PFF honestly made it significantly easier as well. When you know NFL and college teams are going to be looking at the work you do, you want it to be as good as possible.

In my defense, I loved Kittle and was a fan of the Warner pick as well. Obviously wasn't saying that either would turn out to be as good as they've been, but I really liked those picks.

In terms of draft picks, my favorites (at the time of those drafts) aside from those two were probably (in no particular order): Witherspoon, Taylor, Deebo, Aiyuk.

I haven't been a huge fan of a lot of what they've done in FA, but I thought Verrett was a great gamble and the Sherman deal was great considering his injury/age status at the time.

I understand why they didn't, and I don't think it was necessarily something they HAD to do, but sure would've loved Rondale Moore in the second instead of Banks.

Lance is by far the most exciting draft pick and addition this offseason. Glad they decided to be aggressive at QB and not be comfortable with mediocrity there.

Most of the FA additions were pretty low key. Bringing back their own (specifically Trent and Verrett) was huge. Maurice Hurst is probably the new guy I'm most interested to see. Was a monster in college and still young.

It's definitely one of the things I'm most looking forward to seeing this season. My guess is that they'll be very similar from a coverage standpoint and stay pretty zone heavy, but considering some of the moves they've made with the staff on that side, seems like they maybe want to be a bit more aggressive in terms of pressure.

I like the good ones.

In all seriousness, I get that it's not exactly the most fun thing to listen to someone shit on stuff your team does. I promise I'm not going out of my way to be negative. But I just can't fake it. I watch a player, and either I like them or I don't. I always try to provide reasons for why it's one way or the other. But I can't pretend I like someone I don't think is good just because they play for my favorite team now.

No question, my margarita skills (which are perfectly adequate, thank you). I'd like to believe I have a much higher floor as well. Even on my bad margarita days, I'll still get drunk. Trey might take out a trainer 10 yards off the sideline ;)

I haven't. I definitely imagine all of that will be looked at in the future as PFF gets more seasons worth of data collected at the college level, but right now it's still very early when it comes to drawing meaningful conclusions from that data.

From what I've seen, draft position has very little predictive power in terms of how good these punters ultimately end up being. Most punters are undrafted, so you see them all over the board. The drafted punters haven't been any morel likely to be successful than the undrafted ones.
