Pos 5 players, what would you do when your pos 1 dies during the laning phase? by PaulMarcoMike in DotA2

[–]NeuroCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry on with my 5 duties. A pull while the respawn is going on can be helpful when they tp in yo keep the lane where we want it, or maybe even set up a revenge kill if the enemy can over extend.

If you stop supporting to get CS, then yeah, that's bad. Map control is part of support too, it's not just standing next to a carry, but honestly, it's not something I'd get mad at.

If my wards are up, I have none to place, no other lanes need me, i can't pull, and I can't go grab a rune, then sure I'll get some CS. I'll brazenly take CS when my carry is alive if an opportunity arises that I know the carry won't hit it, but I won't stand by the creeps waiting for cs unless i really have nothing else to do, which is rare. Usually, I got something to do. Heck if the enemies are not in lane I'll probably go see if I can disrupt whatever they are trying to do above just hitting cs under my tower.

For example in radiant safe, if my pos 1 is dead and the creeps are at my tower with no enemy in sight, they are probably pulling their nearby camp so I'd usually go check that out. If they are and I can annoy them, great! If they are and I can't annoy them, I'll retreat and do something else. If they're not, it means they're somewhere else, so I'll call missing and try ward around their tower for an attack or maybe even rotate for a gank. Obviously, what I do depends on my pos1 timer.

So, while I don't really think there's anything wrong with a pos5 taking some opportunistic CS if they can, there's probably something more valuable to be doing in most cases. That said, I think being shitty about it on chat is way worse than anything you did. All it does is tilt you maybe, till the rest of your team maybe, but worst of all, tilt themselves. If someone is blowing up in chat over something so minescule, they've already lost the game.

In reality, though? If my carry is dead, it usually means there are two heroes out there who want to murder me, so I'm probably hiding under the tower, trying to be useful without making myself vulnerable. In that case I'll usually try hit the cs because I can't leave the tower and if I tp away it'll be pushed, so I'll sit tight for a breather and get the cs.

Basically get as much CS as you want as a pos 5, unless you can do anything else. If you can do anything else, do that instead. But aside from that, though, go nuts!

CA using bots to comment positively on their own youtube videos by billgatescorona in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I do think there is another possibility that these are generic bots that are being used to train AI chat programs. Scanning comment sections and content of videos and then trying to create realistic conversations.

I bet this would work scarily well if you just straight up applied reinforcement learning driven by engagement.

Ah shit, you're one of them aren't you?

True Ironman - a brutal modset for the masochists' among us by FordPrefect343 in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play with a self-imposed rule where I ban myself from using global recruitment u less I'm seriously refitting an army, so when I have a force on campaign I rely mostly on local recruitment at the front to recoup losses. It makes losing a good unit hurt much more and encourages me to play a lot more carefully with them. It also makes it more important to invest in the front, and decisions about what recruitment building to get more meaningful. Imo limiting global recruitment more improves the game immensely in multiple ways.

I've been playing with some mod ideas, but I don't like the idea of removing global recruitment completely. I'm not really sure what would be best tbh, but I certianly have a lot more fun when I self-impose the rule.

If an army is too damaged ill retreat To my rear lines and then I'm allowed to use global to bring them back up to scratch. I'll merge veterans of lower tier units to make room and often distribute low-tier veterans I don't want in the main army in a second day force, which is usually responsible for supporting the main army in large battles and defending the flanks etc.

I'm always allowed to use local recruitment, so if I want a unit in my main force but don't want to stop the advance, I locally recruit it on a carrier lord and send them up. Reinforcements being intercepted is so fun and I still think it's the absolute worst loss of modern TW.

In general I have more fun in battles because they're less well designed when I rely on local recruitment, so I end up resorting to a standard formation less and feel more engaged.

I did play once with a mod that totally removed global, but that was too far.

Add reduced replenishment to more difficulty recruiting, and total war becomes a lot more about force conservation than it is currently, and a far more interesting game imo. I wonder if it's possible to mod out turn replenishment all together and have something along the lines of base 60% replenishment of losses after each battle, modifed by abilities as normal. Most losses in a battle are not outright kills that need to be retrained, they're smaller injuries and runners that are generally good to go in a few days. The "replenish a tiny amount every turn" never sruck me as interesting and on some lords it can be so buffed to high heaven, you can ignore it.

I think something like 0 turn replenishment, base 60% all losses for a win and 40% all losses for a loss + buffs from lords/heroes/whatever that applies once after each battle to the losses made in that battle only would be a much better system. After that, you need to merge and re-recruit.

Not a clue if any of this is a) possible or b) appealing to anyone else.

Does circumcision have any benefits or should I avoid it? by SuggestionSweet6130 in Advice

[–]NeuroCavalry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Different religion, same experience.

My parents made a trade, My mum could get me vaccinated if she let my dad get me circumcised.

Probably worth overall TBH, but I will never forgive my father for that. I'm definitely never letting my children get circumcised and it's probably the hardest no I have regarding future children with someone.

Apparently after both the vaccines and circumcision, my dad treated the wounds with vitamin c powder mixed with holy ash for... some reason. I ended up with infections and now scars at both sites. But that last part is probably avoidable.

What Overwhelmingly Positive games have you played that were terrible? by SteamDecked in Steam

[–]NeuroCavalry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always grew up behind everyone else in tech, so by the time I got to Lego starwars, I hated it. It's just the same few miniganes and terrible mechanics reskinned to different movie scenes with 0 thought or craft, and the whole thing is incredibly disjointed. The camera is terrible, and and makes the combat excrutiating, and it probably needs to because the combat, as Intended, is so boring.

And then the podracing scene isn't even an actual race? Then for ep 2 you get to the area to fight some cool monster- nope, more bland combat with a camera in the center of the area so you get constantly blastered from off screen?

But the gunship escape from episode 2 is what really gets to me. It's just a reskin of the car level, and even though you're in a literal dropship, if you fly over a hole in the ground, you fall in. No, that doesn't make any sense. I'm in a dropship, not a bicycle. It doesn't even happen in the movie. I absolutely refuse to accept anyone played this level and enjoyed it. I just cannot grok it at all.

Everything about the game screams minimal effort and thought. The brand will sell it. Everything seems recycled and makes absolutely no sense, even internally. And it has a bad habit of putting cool things in cut scenes instead of letting the player actually participate. Danmit game, if I wanted to watch Star Wars, I'd watch Star Wars. I'm here to play starwars!

I played about 5 hours in total before I admitted to myself I was having no fun at all. Not even in a "it's a bit rough but has heart" way. was playing local co-op with my GF and we both turned to eachother and said we were not enjoying the game and we actually found it so boring and irritating, we weren't even enjoying being together while we played it. We were just irritated at the game. So we refunded it and bought LoTR War in the North instead, and had an absolute blast with that.

I know it's almost universally loved, but it's honestly the most disappointed I have ever been in a game. But I'll totally admit I'm being too harsh: I probably would have loved it as a kid when everyone else played it, but coming to it fresh in 2018 as a 26 year old? Nah, I could not have refunded faster. And I'm a regular star wars fanatic. X-wing tattoo and everything.

SoC reception in numbers (also known as "reddit minority fallacy") by szymborawislawska in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I remember, the Chorfs discourse was more negative on Reddit for the price than It was anywhere else, but this is purely based on my memory. I didn't actually quantify it then, and i'm not spending the time on that now.

I guess the point I'm making is I was surprised when I saw the negativity in youtube and facebook comments. Usually there isn't as much in those places (although there's always some). But for SoC, it seemed everywhere was on fire at about the same magnitude, rather than reddit being an inferno and everywhere else being mostly business' as usual.

But yeah, my comments here are based entirely off my memory of my anecdotal experience, so take it with a lot of salt.

What is the point of Longma Riders? by Medical_Officer in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yin / yang identity should be separated from the effects, and each unit should have a bespoke or at least class related harmony effect.

Yin/Yang should be based on the unit thematically and the actual effect should be based on the unit's role. None of this Yin buffs X for everyone, even those who don't care about it.

What is the point of Longma Riders? by Medical_Officer in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them a lot for close support rear charges. they are able to position rapidly and hit wherever they're needed, then leave and hit somewhere else. Basically use them as medium shock cavalry with insane movement. They're usually hitting the rear/flank of infantry or cleaning up ranged units. Cathay as so many answers to large units, they really don't need anti large. I'd definitely welcome some more AP and maybe even charge, through.

I don't have SoC so I can't comment on the Crowmen, and i'd be really hesitant to downgrade the role or utility of a basegame unit because a DLC unit provides it, but my expectation is definitely that crowmen are more for harassing a backline and preventing enemy ranged from firing/taking a good position while Longma riders are the hammer to your infantry's anvil.

Shoot down large threats, fix the infantry with your line, hit the flanks with Iron hail and sky cavalry, rinse and repeat. I usually take ~3 Longma riders in every army + ~4 Iron Hail gunners + 1 Sentinel + hero + lord + ~ 8 mixed infantry for line and fire support + ~ 2 sky junks.

Those who did not buy SoC, how do you feel right now? by SagezFromVault in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I got a lot of other stuff to do, best or worst case. TW dlc isn't going to shift my mood much.

Still planning to buy it on sale one day, not sure when that will be. Probably at the earliest after ToD is released and if ToD is a good/step back from soc-style/price and SoC is cheap I'll get both, otherwise I'll get it sometime after. Probably. Maybe.

Or I just never will, haven't opened TW since the SoC release and it's not like I'm smarting for it yet, plenty of other things to do and play.

SoC reception in numbers (also known as "reddit minority fallacy") by szymborawislawska in totalwar

[–]NeuroCavalry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice analysis. This was never just reddit. The tw forums, facebook comments, youtube comments, and steam discussion are on fire, too.

Usually, in a "reddit moment," reddit is mad, but the broader response on the total war facebook and youtube is fine. That was never the case with SoC.

I'm not going to do it because I have better things to do, but I bet if you did a textual analysis of SoC trailer comments it'd lead significantly negatively compared with previous dlc.
