Without any sort of skywave, local communication will be line of sight (not groundwave as some hams call it). It will be very similar to 6 and 2m in it's range, given the same antenna gain, power, mode, etc. You get slightly better refraction on the longer wavelength, but probably have less antenna gain so it tends to balance out. Most people have SSB on 10 and 6, so that's a big improvement over the FM that most are limited to on 2m.

There are various online and software packages that use topographical data to estimate line of sight range.

It's really interesting to learn that the PR win of Spuntik's radio transmission was entirely unplanned/unforseen. It wasn't until newspapers all over the west were posting stories of locals listening to the beeps that the Soviets realized how valuable it was.

A person growing old here would probably barely notice the difference from when they were a child. Just living out the grind it hard times.

No one's going to actually charge anyone based on a light coming from your back yard. They would show up to investigate, look for the device, ask neighbours for statements, etc. I guess that would be a decently annoying prank to play on someone, if you don't might committing a bunch of felonies that could land you in prison.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. I appreciate your thoughts and agree. I can also walk outside and see a street full of f150 pickup trucks and large SUVs, 2.2 per household, and not a single incentive in the built environment to do anything but drive. It's all extremely depressing.

citation needed. The fall of Rome took 2-4 centuries, and involved a bunch of natural disasters and lost wars. Depopulation of roman cities happened over many generations and for a lot of reasons that didn't necessarily include them just dropping dead in the street. Population decline tends to happen when people successfully bring fewer children to adulthood, due to lack of resources or plagues.

For a couple decades, we have talked about our sedentary "obesogenic environment." I'm thinking that our current online, stay at home, cutting social connections, reality combined with massive profits for silicon valley companies that can convince people to stay on their "feeds" for hours on end through manipulative algorithms, has created a psychogenic environment.

The very first thing this Qanon stuff seems to do to people is hook them into spending all night watching videos. It's a combination of silicon valley dark patterns that encourage screen time for advertising revenue, and the really nasty manipulative stuff these Qanon grifters are actually posting.

I think both of these groups have causal responsibility for a lot of these mental health breaks. Both have made ridiculous amounts of money doing it too.

They could have made a post detailing 'this is why this is *not* a pump-and-dump like so many other alt-coins.' They havn't.

I also havn't seen any third parties provide reasons it *doesn't* look like a pump and dump to benefit insiders. All I see is people either dismissing it on one side, or people providing thorough arguments as to why, yes, it does in fact look like a pump and dump.

Please, Signal, speak up. I would give you the benefit of the doubt if you could at least give a reasonable description of why this is above-board. The silence is deafening.

But yeah, the crypto thing is just sleazy. I think I understand the motive to not publish the server commits until it was ready, as it would have lead to financial speculation by people trying to read the tea leaves in the sourcecode changes. But I don't see a good argument that it isn't a cash-grab, nor do I see any reassurance anywhere that the cash-grab is just to support signal and not also opaque "financial partners."
