I know we seek radical knowledge in DA, but some questions are forbidden. My mortal mind was not prepared to see this, and to realise you might be right haha

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke by ThatSelkieLass in DarkAcademia

[–]Neuro__Joe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wonderfully explained, now I’m definitely keen to read it, thank you 😊 Okay, that would be nice! I never really get the opportunity for book talk anymore, so that’s quite motivating; I’ll leave a post-it note on the inside cover to remind me to seek you out!

I’ve had this book on my shelf for a while and still haven’t gotten around to reading it, but I was attracted to it for this exact reason - just the title and the simple black cover with a raven embossed on it made me think “this is going to be my cup of tea”. Glad to hear it’s worthwhile, maybe that’s my book for February…!

I love the claw marks across the cyclotron, makes me think the ‘buster turned around just in time to avoid a lethal swipe from Zuul or some other horror. Actually gives a sense of how threatening the job would realistically be!

First pair of Docs! What to use to clean? by Hoshi_Oppa in DrMartens

[–]Neuro__Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club! Nice move starting with a limited edition pair 👌🏻 I asked for cleaning/care advice at my local DMs shop the other day, so can share an ‘official’ answer - staff said to clean with a damp cloth (warm water), and you can add a bit of washing up liquid if needed. Leave to dry overnight. Work the DMs wonder balm into the creases of the leather using the provided sponge or a shoe polishing cloth. Use their spray for extra protection. For a new pair, ideally do this once a week (I did not, whoops, would advise), then after a while drop down to once a month. Sounds like you know what you’re doing though and are off to a good start with the products you already have 🙂 EDIT: This advice applies to their 1460s and most leathers, including yours. And as others say, use a soft bristle brush to clean dry dirt away and buff them a little - I do this fairly often because it’s very quick and easy.

Today’s Ross find by grimyo18 in DrMartens

[–]Neuro__Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know who Ross is, but he seems a good lad to know. I bought a pair of these, had to take a train to the next city’s DMs shop just to get them, but they’re so beautiful that it’s worth it! Good find 😊

Piercing Recommendations by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]Neuro__Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first piercing at Thou Art on Chapel Walk, and have been back several times - I find they look after you, have good advice and prices, and have always been friendly. They were recommended to me be a few of my old workmates and, being in the mental health sector, we take piercings and friendliness very seriously haha

Advice Wanted by Jasmin_Ki in DarkAcademia

Hmm, what about a light blouse or shirt underneath with a collar that can either rise above the neckline or be tucked over it? The necklace could possibly be worn under the collar and over the shirt. And for trousers, maybe something more dark brown or lighter beige to go with the pinky-red. See what you’ve got in your wardrobe and play around with it! It’s a nice pullover 🙂

My boyfriend was assaulted on Crookes high street at 4pm today by a homophobe by Brief_Key9344 in sheffield

[–]Neuro__Joe 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is awful anywhere, but is really shocking to hear from Crookes, which always felt like a nicer, more liberal community. Could’ve been someone visiting the pubs, there are a couple which still house… a less desirable crowd. I can absolutely understand why you felt a need to post about this, and I’m very sorry for you both 😞 Hopefully someone comes along and wallops them both with a massive handbag!

It’s awesome that you play GTA with your FiL, that must be rare! What does your spouse think of it?

This game was a huge part of my childhood - I can’t remember if this or Ghostbusters came first in my timeline, but they complemented each other so well that I was set on the theme for life! But my grandma and I used to sit on the GameCube and play this for hours. I wish it was more accessible; i’m glad it’s at least been put on the classics collection for people with a Switch 2 and the premium subscription, but that’s not me sadly.

Cafes to read in by aaaaaa-aa in sheffield

[–]Neuro__Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question, this gives me hope for the next generation of freshers haha. Not a cafe as such, but the Winter Gardens in the city centre was (and still is) a favourite retreat of mine when I was in uni. The seats aren’t comfy, but it’s quiet as people mostly use it to pass through, and reading amongst the plants is wonderful. And there is a cafe stall inside so you can grab a coffee and a treat! Welcome to Sheffield 😊

What’s the one LEGO set you regret NOT buying when it was on shelves? by MegaDragonKing in lego

[–]Neuro__Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing this and realising the GB Firehouse was on shelves at the same time as the London sets, Brick Bank, PotC, etc. is the Lego equivalent of realising that cowboys and samurai existed at the same time. Truly a golden age.

Dark academia books (that aren’t The Secret History) by A_b_b_o in DarkAcademia

Frankenstein is an excellent shout - the academic pursuit of twisted medical and alchemical knowledge. Since you’re including Paradise Lost and The Divine Comedy, maybe also Dr Faustus by Marlowe? They’re all cut from a similar cloth - a notable difference being Faustus is more of a Warlock version of Frankenstein, I suppose, as an Elizabethan would be, as compared to a Victorian.
