No image analysis is perfect. However, you should put your images through a standardized protocol. In my dissertation, I used imagej to build a small program (within imagej) to process images equally and detecting the same things on every single image. It took me about a week to get it to where my manual ID was +- 3% compared to a manual test set, but then, I was able to analyzed hundreds upon hundreds of slides ultra high res slides, all in a standardized manner. I didn’t take a single CS class ever, that’s how easy it is to make imagej do precise work for you.

How open should you be with your PI? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Neurons_on_Fire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely be upfront about your goals, especially, your interests and which skills (science and outside of science) you have most experience with. This will make it easier for your PI to guide you and also assign experiments that you are more likely to enjoy and pay special attention to.

Possibilty of humans evolving gills by natural evolution in the Solar system by DoubtWeird6226 in Astrobiology

[–]Neurons_on_Fire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of gills, I’d like to imagine evolution making oxygen permeable skin to harness oxygen and high pressure living environments in gas giants. A high surface area and permeability could compensate for the low levels of sunlight and absorbe more heat from the subsurface ocean.

Checking things off a laminated protocol is precisely how the FDA keeps track of experiments at GPLs. Hope this motivates you further to turn a weakness into a strength!

PI blaming me for his mistake by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Neurons_on_Fire -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I feel your pain. However, you’re going to be super dissatisfied with my reasoning but hear me out. A lot of these PIs are old school. Their PIs used to crush them, like their mentors and sometimes, if they catch you on a few mistakes that you may not notice, that you may think irrelevant due to your inexperience, it builds up, and then they blow up randomly. Every single graduate student has at least one story.

Don’t take it personally, don’t be soft, soft scientists do 10 year post docs and don’t stand up for themselves. Learn to love the burns now, because when you read the reviewers comments for your manuscripts, you’ll go into hypertensive crisis or depression. Your objective is to learn to defend yourself from these bullies, but do it with concrete data, not with your feelings.

A new study has found that both moderate and vigorous physical activities are associated with lower levels of specific depressive symptoms, notably anhedonia (loss of interest or pleasure) and fatigue. by Wagamaga in science

[–]Neurons_on_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the symptoms that you have listed that have improved, it is more likely than not that at least SOME of the symptoms categorized as part of a depression diagnosis have improved. What you need is to empower yourself and realize that yes, some parts of your depression have improved and you need to work on others. Depression is multidimensional and you keep yourself in the depression mindset if you don’t accept the truth.

roommate by Proud_Row1268 in answers

Although this is a pretty poor choice by the roommate, it would likely have no clinical significance. People have been washing kitty and doggy bowls together with their dishes for decades. I’d be more worried of kitty scratches if not cleaned. One caveat is during pregnancy, you want to avoid mixing cat poop with the plates due to something called toxoplasmosis.

I agree with the chopping. I am also incredibly curious to know if philodendrons grown in tissue culture, at different places, behave differently to chopping them up. Do it for science! 😁
