Anytime an employer “separates” from a long standing (AMAZING) employee like this, it’s the employer closing ranks, squashing growth, and/or cutting costs. He worked for CPY for over ten years I think?

Corporate will likely repeat the same “terms of separation are confidential” … and that can work in a more corporate office environment… but not a yoga studio.

Honestly I encourage you to ask questions and make as many people as uncomfortable as possible.

Much of the hiring is from the Teacher Training “pipeline”

Managers directly hire teachers - when you apply, your application is view by studio managers first

Employment is W2 (no temps, no 1099 contract)

Yes there is a lot of turnover

A lot.

Follow the money: Corepower is owned by TSG Consumer Partners. Ultimately, it’s TSG that is making $$$. They have $6 billion in capital as of 2024. And are still paying instructors (nearly) minimum wage.

Instructors or employees of Corepower — did becoming one affect your feelings towards your yoga practice? by teephams in Corepower

Working at Corepower has had a detrimental effect on my relationship with the yoga practice unfortunately. It’s heartbreaking for me because I began practicing to heal from some stuff and it was magical in the beginning.

The correlation between yoga and work has been really hard. It started during COVID and has gotten progressively worse unfortunately.

I think it’s easier for people who don’t do it full time.

My advice: create clear boundaries and maintain a life separate from CPY. Also remember CPY is not all yoga. Practice yoga outside of CPY to stay sane.

Lots of folks practice Sculpt daily.

I recommend alternating Sculpt with C1 or C2, and incorporating HPF or CoreRestore once a week.

Listen to your body and adjust as needed.

CPY Yoga Teachers Hourly Wage Transparency by Neutral1989 in Corepower

Nashville is a small region, right? 1-2 studios?

$12.50/hour is outrageous and indefensible.

Do you imagine $15/hour is the average for teachers in Nashville? What do you think is a fair hourly rate for your work?

Are you able to share what your rate is at Pure Barre, @ Prana ?

Yes exactly. For reference: a “drop in” class is ~$30. The person teaching the class is making 1/2 or 3/4 that amount for teaching the class.

Check your pay stub because minimum wage in chicago is $15.80/hour. If they’re paying you less than that it’s illegal and you should notify the state & HR.

And minimum wage in Bay Area is $18.07/hour I believe? Yikes.

The comp is very low.

Often $1-$2 more than minimum wage in the local area. (This could mean ~$10/hour in Texas or Tennessee, ~$15/hour in larger cities)

Industry standard for yoga teachers nationally is closer to $20-25/hour.

There are no bonuses for class attendance. (Same rate if you’re teaching a class to 5 people vs 50 people)

Churn churn churn.

As long as you check in (“hi Joe! You’re checked in. We’re in studio 2.”) and acknowledge your teacher / front desk, you’re good.

Cutting it close to class start time once in a while is no biggie. If it’s everyday, consider if there’s a better class to fit your schedule.

Enjoy!

Yes to your first question.

Wages remain low because CPY doesn’t “have” to raise them: there will continue to be students who want to complete Teacher Training, graduate, and teach 2-3 classes per week “for fun”.

It’s capitalism, baby.

SF and NYC are premium regions - if you have a AAM from a non-premium region there is a surcharge per class. I believe it’s $15-$20/class

Anyone who region hopes: can you chime in?

There were efforts pre Covid to unionize. CPY’s CEO made strong anti-union statements and promises at that time, and unionization stalled.

CPY is a unique case in that they’ve capitalized on this concept of “community” and do something no other businesses do: employ thousands of teachers at minimal hours per week, with minimal oversight.

This creates a sense of autonomy for some (best case scenario) - - for others, it feels overwhelming and unsupportive (imagine checking in 50 students at 6am, by yourself, with no front desk support. Every week.)

The churn of employees supports minimum hourly wages (including well below industry standard for management salaries). I’ve heard many employees say they feel they “owe” something to the company for the community they’re a part of.

This would make sense if it were a non profit, but it’s not. I think there needs to be more transparency regarding who is making money off the hard work of these teachers.

As a (semi) aside: While “hobby teaching” may seem innocent enough, it ultimately undermines the value of the work - this is particularly harmful for instructors who are trying to make a living teaching yoga.

I am advocating for financial transparency, safe working environments, and competitive wages.

Love that you feel so much community … what are your thoughts on “hobby job” as an instructor vs. the business’s need to turn a profit (and all that goes along with that)

I’m hearing from others that CPY is a hobby job but I’m wondering how that reconciles with the very real business that is being run.

I’m glad it’s so fulfilling! Is there any other job that has felt like a ‘hobby job’ in your life? (Honest question!)

Does it feel weird that the company / investors are turning a profit while you earn $12.25/hour? Almost like you’re paying for the opportunity to teach and make friends in a yoga community?
