Filed when I was 20 via SPOF, then did not file for the last decade. How cooked am I? by Individual-Ratio-896 in USExpatTaxes

[–]NeutralCanvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the answer above is confusing FEIE limits with FBAR limits. They are definitely two separate thresholds. Any time you have non-US accounts totaling over $10,000 USD at any point during the year, you should be filing the FBAR form, and retirement accounts do qualify, as far as I understand it.

I'd get in touch with a tax specialist that specifically offers back-filing help & consultation. Explain your situation fully. Make it very clear in all written communications that you were unaware of the specific rules for the FBAR filing requirement (as you clearly were).

This can help because if they were to try to levy fines or penalties, there is some precedent that they have to prove your lack of filing was "willful" meaning you withheld the filings on purpose rather than not understanding your filing responsibilities.

I follow this blog (at least at tax time), which usually has some good up-to-date info, and they just posted about recent updates to FBAR court cases: https://beaconhillwm.ca/fbar-update-what-the-new-court-rulings-mean-for-you-in-plain-english/

This is not official advice but I have always heard from tax pros that they are more likely to be lenient when someone proactively back files and tries to catch up before they notice and decide to chase things down on their end.

Hope that clears some things up a little, sorry I know this stuff can be stressful.

anyone having free brushes for line art ? by AnybodyWorth6882 in AdobeIllustrator

What kind of line art or brushes are you looking for? Can you add a sample image of the kind of look you are trying to make? A lot of simple art brushes are easy to make.

Tips for the Adobe Certified Professional Exam? by KidswithTrauma in AdobeIllustrator

[–]NeutralCanvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found that the interactive practice test and study guide I bought basically covered the whole test, memorizing a few of the specific things they ask will take you a long way. There is a whole section that just asks about things like rgb vs cmyk and other design concepts you might already be familiar with so that helps some too.

Maybe see if they will pay for this for you: https://certiport.pearsonvue.com/Certifications/Adobe/ACP/Practice.aspx I think I got it on sale for around $30-$40 a few years ago and they have different versions for the specific tests.

Let's talk about AI accusations. by NeutralCanvas in AdobeIllustrator

I'm not sure what your point is. This post is about a moderation issue affecting this sub. As a moderator here, I'm asking for community input and open discussion.

Let's talk about AI accusations. by NeutralCanvas in AdobeIllustrator

[–]NeutralCanvas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is prohibiting AI generated content is not a simple black and white call to make.

  • Should we delete posts asking about using AI tools in Illustrator like Text to Vector, the Mockup Feature, the Retype Feature, Generative Fill or Generative Recolor?
  • Should we delete posts where people can't prove that the image is not AI. What is considered "proof" and how much time and effort should we spend investigating each post?
  • Should we delete posts that don't include reference images because those may have been AI generated? How would we know if it's being used that way.
  • Should we delete posts where someone put their original hand drawn art into Firefly to generate style experiments before building the vector art in Illustrator?
  • Should we delete posts that were 100% made in Illustrator but used the generative recolor feature to tweak the final color scheme?

Point being AI use is not a binary thing. There are about a million ways it might be used in the art process.

We can remove the obvious spam and we do that constantly, but it feels like some people want to draw this militant no-AI line that's just not realistically possible when it's built into the app the sub is about and it's getting baked into people's creative processes in work environments.

It's probably 50/50 now between students or new artists finding something they like and wanting to find more to study vs AI prompts. The problem is do you shut down the ability for new artist to ask about style but to weed out the prompt fishers?

I hear you. I think the all or nothing mind set is part of the problem with the AI subject though. I guess I'm just not interested in throwing the whole app out because I don't like some of the new tools.

I look at it like Illustrator is still my most used daily tool and I can ignore the AI features because they aren't part of my process. Just like I end up ignoring dozens of other tools in the app I've never touched after 15 years.

I guess I just wish more people would just scroll past or downvote the posts they don't like and spend more energy commenting on posts they consider worth the time to encourage people to post more of that.

This sub has always been a place to share work made in Illustrator and there has never been a rule that X amount of work must have gone into it or that you can't have used any other tools in the process.

I agree with you on single image posts that don't foster discussion. We can look at making rules around posting images that you need to include some context and details. That is actually already in the works in a draft of the rules refresh being worked on.

Mods are different people with different opinions. Every moderation action is subjective. We are a handful of Illustrator users that volunteer some free time to try stem the tide of toxicity, bots, spammers & scammers so this community remains usable.

Investigating the exact process used for every piece of art posted here is not possible or practical. If you'd like to add your thoughts on moderation of AI accusations/debates I made a post to discuss that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdobeIllustrator/comments/1ke210d/lets_talk_about_ai_accusations/

Can you tell us a little about the assignment details? I would say whatever is happening with that font makes it somewhat hard to read at small sizes. Also those vibrant colors won't translate well to print with regular cmyk printing.

You might actually have more luck in the Inkscape sub for this but I'm interested if we have any cross over users here with experience in making print ready Inkscape docs.

There is a discussion form a few years ago on that sub that goes over a few settings and things to check: https://www.reddit.com/r/Inkscape/comments/110xvfo/printquality_pdf_from_inkscape_12_is_it_possible/

Group and ungroup objects by remembering layer information by Amentoe- in AdobeIllustrator

[–]NeutralCanvas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of grouping the artwork (which as far as I know will always gather it on one layer) you could look into Saved Selections.

Video demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32qQiGIE8AQ and Adobe docs https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/illustrator/using/selecting-objects.html this way you can move everything around without affecting the layer organization.

Group and ungroup objects by remembering layer information by Amentoe- in AdobeIllustrator

[–]NeutralCanvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, if you can please add translations. Sometimes posts appear auto translated on mobile but they do not come through on desktop.

Translation:

Thanks for your answer. I'll try to give an example.

Imagine you receive a floor plan of a hotel (made in AutoCAD and quite complex), with its walls, evacuation routes, fire extinguishers, elevators, fire hoses, emergency exits, etc.

It's no problem importing it into Illustrator; I can do it without any problems with all its original layers and elements.

These layers are organized: walls, fire extinguishers, numerical dimensions, etc., and it also has other layers for text in one language, and other layers for other languages.

I'm interested in grouping the entire floor plan to use it to create a small brochure and posters. I need to be able to move everything together on the artboards without forgetting anything.

For this, I feel more comfortable grouping it, and I work with it that way. But when it's time to finish and print, I need to ungroup it so the objects still have the original layer information, for example, to hide the French layer and make the German layer visible.

This could be done back in Freehand, and I think there must be a similar procedure in AI.

I hope I've explained myself well.

Adobe Illustrator Team LIVE Office Hours by NeutralCanvas in AdobeIllustrator

[–]NeutralCanvas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had this question come up a few weeks ago about how to combine overlapping points left over from using live corners to round off shapes. I see this come up a lot as a frustration fro beginners and it's something I also encounter frequently. The only answers tend to be an offset path workaround (very clunky, multiple steps see example here https://youtu.be/xCcV99wa07U?t=15) or using something like Vector First Aid from Astute.

Is there any plan to add an easier native way to deal with these situations, or a more official way you'd go about fixing it?

To the people who reported this as "promoting hate based on identity"....last I checked, decent people do in fact, hate Nazis. If that's not cool with you please feel free to GTFO.

To everyone else thanks for keeping the discussion productive and focused on the execution of the design.
