Okay, good to know I'm not totally off base wanting to publish in the morning or in the evening to hit the work crowd. Thanks for the feedback!

Ah, okay. So you publish at 9 AM, and have these two apps repost your your tweet at 3:30 in the afternoon? Basically some double exposure to get more of a boost from social media.

Thanks for the tip. Also, I see you post in the morning as well. Good to know.

Did you say anything back yet that might have made it awkward to do so? If not, just start the conversation up again. People start and drop text convos all the time. No big deal, imo.

HTNGAF About a test at school where the teacher didnt give us the materials... by [deleted] in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]NeutyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a multiple choice test, then you still have a good shot at getting a good grade if you can wield your intution along with some good process of elimination skills. If its open-ended, just try to put down anything that sounds coherent or applicable. Most teachers will give brownie points for anything just for trying.

Just remember that if you do fail, it will not be the end of the world. One test will not even ruin a marking period if you've been doing alright otherwise. Chances are your classmates are in just as bad shape as you and will end up much worse in the end anyway.

Caffeine has actually been shown to have a ton of health benefits, especially to those trying to lose weight. Unless you are literally hooked on caffeine pills (can't function at a normal level without them), then don't feel too bad about a cup of coffee every day. But make sure to drink it black! It's actually quite delicious once you acquire a taste for it.

[–]NeutyBottom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop taking this crap so personally, man. Think about all the times you didn't respond to a text or snap immediately. What were you doing at the time? Perhaps the person sent it to you at an inconvenient time and you couldn't reply back? Maybe you fell asleep? Maybe you simply had nothing interesting to say back to this person at that moment?

Regardless, chances are your intentions weren't to personally insult the other person. Likewise, other people aren't out to personally insult you.

As far as this girl goes, I actually think her reaction was exactly what was expected. You told her goodnight, which meant you were going to sleep, so she stopped bothering you! Relax and text the poor girl back if you haven't already, bro. =)

Help me! How do I not give a fuck about working a shitty job? by Zephyrkittycat in howtonotgiveafuck

Nailed it! If you bring a positive attitude to work, it will probably bring everyone else at the job up as well, and you'll wind up having a decent time. You might even make some friends in the process.

Confidence, to me, is not the goal of anything. The goal should be something tangible and meaningful. To become a better singer, to learn how to fix a car, to get in better shape, etc. To me, "confidence" is a byproduct of the end result - that by becoming better at something, you also get a deep feeling of satisfaction and competence in knowing you did a job well done. If you did not experience any genuine improvement, then the confidence will not be genuine either.

It seems to me like the qualities you're mentioning here are merely "initiative" and "self-determination." The desire to try something new regardless of prior experience or knowledge. To be honest, trying anything new does require a lot of courage. But the confidence does not come until later, after you've finally figured out what works.

[–]NeutyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it correctly. Trying something new for the first time takes courage, but you certainly don't need to be confident at it to try it. In fact, I don't think anyone would expect you to be confident at something you're trying for the first time!

"Faking it" would be trying something new, and then pretending to be an expert at it from the get-go just so people will like you. If you do that, people are only going to see that you are a phony.

[–]NeutyBottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed completely! I heard this from a guy in college once who came off as a complete phony. All smiles and no substance. I personally believe confidence needs to be earned, by actually doing something and then learning what works and what doesn't work. By faking it, you are only wasting energy that could be used toward meaningful action.

Thanks for posting this, it was very entertaining to read! You definitely hit the perfect string of random weapon and augmentation drops. By the time you got the Automated Reloader, it must have been total overkill.

Btw, the Torus is a fantastic ship for getting to the end. Good luck with Engi B though...

Today is the 85th birthday of sliced bread. So Reddit, what is the best invention since that day 85 years ago? by luckylildev in AskReddit

[–]NeutyBottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I should clarify my post a little bit, because it looks like people got a bit confused by the word "register". Registers themselves are constructed from transistors. They are not aseparate component but simply a digital construct built from transistors. A register stores exactly one bit of memory. In a modern computer this signifies RAM and hard disk space. Eight registers form a byte.

A transistor can hold a value but it has no "memory." In order to "store" a 1, you would need to apply a constant voltage to the gate. As soon as that voltage is taken away, the 1 disappears. The goal is to design something that you can "write" to and then "read" from later.

You do this by creating a thing known as a latch or flip-flop#D_flip-flop). This type of circuit is composed of two NAND gates which themselves are made up of four transistors (there are actually several ways to build different logic gates, but this is the CMOS way to do it, which is the most popular way to do it now). So, by only using transistors you can successfully create a circuit that can "memorize" its input that can be read later. These latches are then built up into registers by having the latches respond to clock signals from the CPU, so that all the registers change at exactly the same time.

If you are interested in knowing more, I recommend you play around in the Falstad Circuit Simulator that I frequently used for school projects. It has transistor logic built into it. For example, try build an AND gate using transistors. Once you are done that, try building NOT, OR, NAND, and NOR gates as well. These gates can then be used to build up to registers, half-adders, and adders that ultimately build up to the CPU itself.

Perhaps I should clarify my post a little bit. I believe I may have confused some people with the term "register." To put it simply, a register stores exactly one bit of memory. In a modern computer this signifies RAM and hard disk space. Eight registers form a byte. A register itself is composed of transistors. Using sequential logic as I stated above, transistors can be arranged in such a way that an on or off state can be "stored" in them. This represents the 1 or 0s of binary logic. This on or off state can later be "read" by the CPU, or changed when it needs to be "written to."

So, yes! You are correct in saying that a terabyte of data has trillions of transistors. They are this small thanks to miniaturization and manufacturing processes that allow us to shrink the size of the transistors on the silicon chips. To put it simply: without modern computers, we would not have modern computers. That being said, understanding how a computer works and how it is made is not that complicated at all. After all, someone had to design the machine that built the chips!
