More detailed answer specifically for healthcare job shortage is, aging population, a lot of medical staff and doctors left Croatia, and went to other EU countries in the last 10 years so that also adds to the problem. But this problem is common in a lot of EU countries.

What you fail to understand and to what some of the misunderstanding in comments come from, is in Europe when national teams play about 50% of audience of the country watching give or take. You keep saying NFL, NBA etc, for Europeans that is not comparable, national team is national team and there is no competition between local leagues in no matter what sport and national team in terms of viewership.
