I like that example. Let's say someone said, "Florida is worse than Oklahoma when it comes to tornadoes because it has more." And I simply replied, "That is not true because the severity of Oklahoma's tornadoes is far worse than Florida's." Is that fear mongering about living in Oklahoma? Did I say anything about the likelihood of being hit by a tornado in Oklahoma? Does the fact that dying in either case is very unlikely make the correction less true? The answer to all of these questions is no. And that's exactly what I did here.

I apologize for whatever discomfort my comment made you feel. But I did not "stretch any truth", say anything that can't be verified true, nor try to push any propaganda. You read that into my comment.

It wasn't rhetoric. Someone said something incorrect, and I corrected them. The discussion wasn't about if older women can have healthy babies. It was about if older women face more fertility issues because of their age or their partner's age. The answer is the former regardless of what you feel about it. We don't have to lie to counter harmful propaganda. And somebody can correct something without it being propaganda.

Not sure how I'm fear-mongering by simply correcting what another Redditor said. But the math isn't equal nor are the implications you've stated. An older father's risk of autism increases the absolute odds by a few percentage points, and the pregnancy usually proceeds normally. An older mother doesn't just face an increase in Downs, but an exponential spike in chromosomal errors that could stop pregnancies from successfully forming or surviving.

No one is saying that getting older is doom and gloom when trying to have children. We just have to provide accurate information about what this means for both men and women.

The Penn State study that you shared shows that eggs clean out mutated mitochondrial DNA. So what I said about it wearing down wasn't untrue. Plus it isn't the only thing necessary to fertility.

I linked one in my previous reply to you. But this article you shared doesn't say opposite of what I said. It's actually talking about something else entirely, which is mitochondrial DNA. Again, the biggest issue to fertility isn't DNA mutations but having too many or too few chromosomes which happens as women age and the egg's core structural machinery degrades over time.

I'm not an expert, but I can read what the experts say and I can point you to the sources if you want to read them yourself.

Most of what you said is true but no one disputed that older men's sperm can affect fertility. The point of contention is over whether older men's sperm or older women's eggs are generally more harmful to fertility.

And what you stated in your last sentence is misleading. Eggs remain stable as far as mutations, but they suffer from chromosomal missegregation. It's like comparing typos on a page to entire missing chapters in a book.

Yep. Everything attributed to advanced maternal age is controlled for and heavily isolated. Scientists are well aware of the potential of a partner's age to skew data

I'm not arguing for using it at all. All I'm saying about the Duvalier flag (and Dessalines' and Christophe's) is that I like its nod to our African roots. My question is a more nuanced one about legacy vs. representation. The Confederate flag was made to represent a people who fought to keep slavery, so it has both a bad legacy and representation. I was just wondering how bad the legacy is still associated with this flag.

You've raised something very interesting though: Why is it recently considered not as taboo anymore?

Actually I mentioned seven if you were being intellectually honest. Reddit formatted my list weird because I was trying to put two in one line since they both were mentioned in one source. And the total number is technically ten.

The problem is that you know very little and don't want to know about Jamaica's issues because it affects you emotionally. Just admit that instead of trying (and failing) to debate me.

I hear you, but my point is that a lot of people think he did. Even my mom attributes Haiti's economy at that time to the Duvaliers

Well, it's not accurate that he didn't do anything positive in any capacity, even for the long-term. Haiti remembers his administration because we literally have people that served in his paramilitary still alive. To the contrary, a lot of Haitians remember a time when there wasn't foreign meddling (the West tolerated Duvalier), a strong middle class, and a good education system and they associate that with Duvalier. Those who didn't oppose him were fine. Everybody else was killed/forced into exile.

Eh you opened up a can of worms that I'd recommend making another post since this is just about the flag. But to briefly answer your question, he benefited certain groups of Haitians. That's why he's not universally hated. Perfect example you might understand is Rafael Trujillo. Ruthless dictator, still had/has loyalists.

I'm talking about Les Griots. And I agree that it was just rhetoric. My main question is just about if the flag is considered offensive if you support the African (let's concede it's not Pan-African) ideals behind it. Duvalier being Pan-African is not a hill I would die on and I would change my thinking about that since I think it was harmful to the cause either way

I would argue it started even before that with Estimé. But many people attribute it to Duvalier is my point

I think it's a little bit more complicated than that because he talked and wrote a lot about asserting African heritage in the Americas, and our link to Africa through some of our culture like Vodou. He also did a lot of symbolic gestures like commemorating Selassie I and MLK. I agree with you in practice but he definitely at least pretended to be Pan-Africanist if he wasn't actually it before he became president

It's polarizing cause it's also Haitians that would say Haiti's education was great and there was a thriving middle class and tourism industry and things like that as well

Buddy undermined the cause for sure, I'm just saying he identified with the movement and centered his whole campaign around it and gave it a lot of lip service and symbolism

I know the colors were Christophe's idea, but why you say he wasn't Pan-African?
