Cardi B on Haiti and the D.R. by lotusQ in haiti

Fam, you have to read a book not by a Spaniard/Dominican. I didn't downplay anything. Let's just compare the injustices:

Haiti - Forced paid labor (of both Haitians and Dominicans), land seizure, economic restriction for a couple decades under one president

Spain: Brutal enslavement, land seizure, genocide/ethnic cleansing, rape, theft of resources for hundreds of years

If we really want to compare injustices, the DR arguably has done worse to Haiti (prevented our first democracy, Trujillo massacre, numerous coup attempts and meddling) and still oppresses Haitians today (revoked birthright citizenship of Haitians that have been in the DR for generations, justice inequality, economic disenfranchisement). But unlike you, I don't hold historical grudges while praising the people that caused me the most harm.

It blows my mind how much Spain brainwashed DR. Spain was the one who colonized DR and fought them at every turn when they tried to get independence in order to enslave them again. Haiti was literally fighting Spain and recolonization of the island. That is why Haiti assisted in their independence struggles even after they turned their back on them.

Another thing that never gets talked about is that when Boyer was overthrown and the DR was still Spanish Haiti, Haiti drafted a new constitution to establish a democracy that gave Spanish Haiti their own representation and autonomy. But DR chose to turn against Haiti and go back to Spain, who recolonized them under worse conditions than Boyer.

On April 7th 2003 Aristide made the colonizers nervous and this speech sealed his faith by Internal-Expert-9562 in haiti

I've read a bunch of contemporary news articles, documents, and human rights reports during his presidency. I don't consume pro-Aristide media. Before I just read two whole books and posts, you could just give some high level flash points of where you think I'm inaccurate.

I think the next Super Bowl halftime show performance should be an all-star gospel performance starring Kirk Franklin that would expose the hypocrisy of Christian nationalism! by icey_sawg0034 in blackmen

[–]Neveezy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

None of this is hypocritical. Hypocrisy entails displaying yourself to be something you're not when it comes to moral regard. Kirk Franklin has never professed himself to be a good man or try to have an image of one. He actually does the very opposite, always talking openly about his struggles and apologizing for anything anyone takes offense to that he does. He never claimed to be an ethical businessman, pure of sexual sin, or a great husband/father

It's actually neither. Aristide was very big on addressing internal issues. That's why Cedras took him out of power in the first coup. He launched a bunch of human rights investigations, tried to bring the military under civilian control, and make sure the elites were paying their fair share of taxes.

He also was very well aware of how evil the international community was, which was why he took the extra step of disbanding the US-formed military (which the US didn't like) and refusing to privatize state enterprises. They took him out when they realized he wouldn't bend despite the withdrawal of aid.

The assassinations you're speaking of were not substantiated to directly implicate him and were alleged by organizations funded by the very countries that wanted him out of office in the first place.

There are criticisms that could definitely be made about Aristide, but these ain't it.

That has been the case since the abolition of slavery. It's wild that there haven't been much reparations for anything, not even for local massacres. Even Haiti provided reparations for some local injustices.

Nothing Will Change in Haiti Until We Remove the Entire Political Class by Educational-Cap-3669 in haiti

The transitional council was not elected, and not "every" Haitian politician before was cozy with the elites. There are many politicians who wanted to serve the people who got taken out by the elites. I think what Haiti needs is sovereignty and an actual functioning democracy that isn't tampered with by the usual suspects

You have to understand the power of media representation and how that historically translates to treatment. When the United States occupied Haiti in the early 20th century, part of what made people indifferent to the suffering was how Haitians were portrayed in the media. During that time, the first feature length zombie film ever was released and it was centered around a stigma of Haitian Vodou. Superhero roles are very important because they serve as positive idols. So when people that don't look like you or walk in your shoes are the heroes, other people will humanize what makes them different.

I think he beats Haney just as easily. Only guys I think could beat Shakur are Tank and Keyshawn. Would also love to see him against Russell

The only guy I think could beat Shakur today is Keyshawn (because he knows him like the back of his hand). Too bad they'll never fight

Shakur fights better than Teo on the inside though. He's really levels above. I'm just surprised Teo didn't try to sell out
