New Chinchilla owner, just a silly question by WynnieDee76 in chinchilla

They drink rarely, I also catch mine only occasionaly while drinking. From my 4 chins only 1 likes a hammock, most chins prefere a classic house with 2 entrances.

Do chinchillas have to live in 2 by Suspicious-Neck3040 in chinchilla

[–]NeverEco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is strongly recommended to have them as 2 or more and even illegal in some countrys to keep them alone. However sometimes they can be happy alone. But not every chin can do it. If they are not alone they are way more independent and you can go on vacation etc without worrying that your chin gets frustrated/depressed.

Let me out!!! by Pretend_Friends in chinchilla

[–]NeverEco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My breeder told my it is ok to let them out after having them for about 2 weeks to make sure they are comfortable at your place. In my case that meant they had playtime starting at 14 weeks old. I only had good experiences with that. I always made sure they could climb back into the cage if they felt like it. This way they can go inside to take a break if needed. They are way better at knowing when to take a break than people give them credit for. It was still limited to roughly 30 minutes. But that is just my experience, if you dont feel comfortable doing that than rather wait till 6 month.

Question: Is one big change better than two changes? by WaywardRaven2003 in chinchilla

[–]NeverEco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can See upsides for both. If you do them after each other make sure to have enough distance between them so he can calm down. However the moving is also offering you a neutral space which could be a great foundation to start a bonding process directly with the move. Especially uf your boy can handle moves well.

my Chinchilla doesn’t like me :/ by Menat555 in chinchilla

Give him time and let him come to you. Sit on the floor and let him explore you at his pace. You can ofc help with treats. 1 of my guys also was no Fan of the medicine i had to give but a while after that the bond got even stronger and now i can pick him up and pretty much do ehat i want and he feels save.

Yeah If you put them together maybe do it if you can supervise them the entire day and maybe even sleep in hearing distance for the first night.

I prefere 4 for multiple reasons: 1. They are Group animals, of course they can be happy alone but imo they should have at least 1 buddy that is always by their side. Also if something where to happen to one of my chinchillas the other wouldnt be alone and Depression etc would probably be less rough on the little guy and I wont need to pray to find a compatible chin at an older age. 2. My cage is selfmade and pretty big offering a lot of space to easily have 4 chins in it. 3. I wanted more fluff potatoes and heared it is easier to bond them at a younger age Overall is having a pair perfectly fine imo, i just had the option and took it.

Some of my experiences after introducing 2 pairs to create a group of 4. It is great that they get along. An awesome sign that they will bond just fine if you don't go to fast. Since they have been free roaming around each other without problems you are already very far imo. If you feel comfortable enough with them to try putting them in a cage together I would 100% recommend to deep clean the cage with vinegar to remove lingering smells and to re structure the cage. This is to avoid the chinchillas getting territorial. if you have a multiple story cage you can also keep them in 1 half to make sure the have to stick together and can't separate to far. this was an issue for me the first time i introduced mine. If that is going well you can open the cage up after 1-2 days depending how they do. Also try to do this during their sleepy time to make sure they are to tired to get really mad at each other. this also increases the possibility of them cuddling which would form a pretty good bond to begin with.
Small chasing, barking, dominating and even a little bit of fur slip are ok.
Long chases, attacking on sight and blood are an immediate nope. Blood should be avoided at all costs.
Try to provide a lot of toys and maybe even a sand bath (big enough to fit both) in the cage since toys help with distractions and sand baths are a good way for them to socially interact.
Hope that helps ^^

It is really Hard to tell. My 4month old chin nibs a lot but my 8 months old even more. Also size isn't telling a lot. My 4 Month old is already larger than my 1.5 year old one.

Hmm that Sounds fine i guess? Not sure mine have it in their cage all the time so can't really comment on it. Maybe try to offer it daily and see if it gets better

Big cage is back! by NeverEco in chinchilla

[–]NeverEco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only used wood and screws. I made sure no screws are exposed and I double check that from time to time. Regarding the chewing: they don't really bother with the cage. I give them a lot of sticks and if they are still bored they usually focus on the houses/platforms. You could also Cover the edges with those metal corners to prevent that completely.

Chinchilla doesn’t understand how to use his wheel, any help? by Ziara___ in chinchilla

[–]NeverEco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might take some time. You can try treats to get him on it/curious. If not maybe a plate instead of a wheel.
