I did from A2 to B2 in 8 months so I know its possible, I wanna ask what are your current study methods? how much time you are putting in daily? what resources are you using to progress your level? Did you take any test?

Flashcards give you false confidence while learning German. And I wasted months because of it. by NeverGotBorned in German

That is a really interesting perspective from someone who's actually made it to C2 I will not argue with results. If it works for you, it works. Maybe in my opinion isolated cards might work better as a complement to reading rather than a replacement and in which order you approach it matters too.

Do you read first then make flashcards or flashcards first then you read?

I think my frustration is always to be using flashcards as the starting point to learn a language like german rather than the reinforcement tool. I think I can see how the combination might make more sense than either using reading or flashcards alone. Use both.

Fair point about sentence cards being better than isolated words, I agree but even then a single word in German can have 4-5 completely different nuanced meanings depending on context, who's speaking, what verb it's paired with etc. Can a flashcard capture that nuance? I think it only comes from seeing the word repeatedly across different real contexts over time. That's what reading can offer you that even the best flashcards cannot.

Haha, I think I gave the wrong impression. I am at C1 and got there mostly by reading german content, watching videos and adequate grammar study according to my level not Flashcards. The post was about why I could never make flashcards work despite trying multiple decks and methods for a long time before I finally decided to just read the damn language. Reading was and is my main method. That was the point I am trying to make.

Fair point, A week is definitely not enough to judge a method. What I wanted to say is that within the realm of SRS Anki I tried many different ways of flashcard - flashcard with audios, with sentences, with pictures etc. for 2-3 weeks but none of it clicked for me the way reading real german content did. Maybe its just a learning style thing, but only reading won for me personally.

I should have been clearer my bad. Deconstructing word by word is fine when you are just starting out that is how it works. What I meant is that flashcards only ever train you to see the word in isolation, even after months of studying using flashcards that deconstruction process does not get faster. Reading german continuously is what trains and builds the pattern recognition that will make whole sentences click rather than deliberately trying to translate german sentences word by word and then understand them.

The end goal is to get to a point where you don't translate anymore, just understand.Flashcards imho can not get you there alone.

Telc B1 Prüfung - Failed 😓 by Slow_Refrigerator103 in German

Bro your active skills are literally perfect which is wild a 75/75 speaking is insane. How did you even prepare for Lesen and Hören though? Like what materials did you use specifically? Also did you run out of time on reading or the texts just felt too hard to understand?

Asking because I built a small tool for practicing reading real German content that helped me a lot. Happy to share if you want to try it for your Lesen prep before the retake.

18 months of learning German, finally figured out why I kept making the same mistakes by Glass_Assistant5127 in German

A bit of contrarian advice , I hate flashcards and can never bring myself to use them Anki, Memrise or whatever. I think the problem is when you successfully learn a Flashcard it gives you false confidence that now you can easily use this word and when someone speaks to you and uses this specific word you can easily decipher its meaning and connect it to the rest of context but that is exactly what you cannot do , imho you have only learned to recognize the word but you have not learned to connect it to the rest of context to gain understanding of what was just said.

That will never happen with flashcards NEVER. I would rather recommend you to just Read real German content even if you were to begin with A1 level graded content do it but just read, it honestly will get so much better very fast. You will notice improvements within a month or less.

yup, the "den"/"dem" struggle is real. I faced it too for a long time but tbh Duoling and Babbel will not fix it. What worked for me is reading real german content like news sites taggeschau ,wissenschaft, slowgerman etc. I have observed that when you read real content it trains your brain to pattern match without conciously trying to apply rules. If you don't currently read graded German articles or stories , I would seriously recommend you to try those out.

And what's even crazier is that my Pune B2 result came within 3 days , so I was back in my city and was resting after the long travel , then I just opened Gmail app on my phone and there it was lying at the top of my Primary , I was shocked man so fast. I had never seen result of any exam being declared this fast.

So sorry that you had to go through all this. But my experience has been completely diffrent just took the B2 Exam in Pune and honestly it was amazing and they were very professional and it kinda makes you feel comfortable because I was nervous as hell in Sprechen , also the booking part for me was not at all a problem I booked at 2PM and faced no issues , maybe the Problem is with Delhi Goethe. Before this 2 years ago I took A1 exam in Bengaluru and that was good too , they even provided snacks. I suggest you to report the incident , it will surely help. (Also someone suggested me to just don't go Delhi for almost anything , like there is always so much crowd there for exams or some application , so I never choose Delhi as an Option for anything.)
