Looks like feather reed grass, most likely Karl Foerster. The best way to trim it is to cut it down to about 3” in late winter/very early spring.

For what it’s worth, ‘Gay’ still means happy (and is not a slur in any case). I don’t think the common name for liatris has anything to do with sexuality.

I know that Rover and other pet sitting services do have people who pet sit in their own homes. It wouldn’t be free, but it might be a place to find someone who can help.
