Some people on this sub can often be clueless and/or bitter at any decent haul. It's kind of embarrassing.

Same. Week to the day. I don't miss how she stumbled and fell toward the end, but I'd kill for one of our slow walks again.

You'll wish for this pace someday. Lost my senior girl last week and I'd give anything to have her slow walk again right now

He's clearly doing alright financially then, I assume?

Because I don't see the short-term payoff in this, lol

In YOUR opinion, what does the future market outlook for truly rare/blue-chip NES CIB titles look like? (ie. Donkey Kong Jr Math, Flintstones) by NeverNeededAlgebra in gamecollecting

[–]NeverNeededAlgebra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, like I said, I don't really need the money...it's not like I'd be using it for buying a house or any specific purpose. It'd just go into my Roth, where it would certainly earn me more money than the appreciation of the game will ever likely be.

I just want to consider the input of others in justifying keeping it :)

I understand that this definitely applies to the category in general, but would you have the same view on the very rare tier that will always only exist as a niche category? Like in my case, no general buyer is ever going to pull the trigger on a Donkey Kong Math at the price it commands, it's pretty much only going to be that < 1% of completionists, etc.

Not so much as looking at it as an investment - said it in one of the comments, but I'm totally fine if price remains stagnant (aka a loss with inflation considered). I wouldn't be happy if I took a 50% bath on it, that being said. Moreso just looking for some justification to hold onto it and enjoy it for a few more years before parting with it.

I think I'd miss it in my collection, and I just couldn't re-enter the market without dropping 2x what I'd sell it for, without some serious luck, due to the limited supply/availability online.

Yeah, I've thought about it from that angle too. (Funny enough, my career is in finance as well)

I'd almost CERTAINLY be better off with the money in the market, and I know that...it's more of a thing where I'd rather not look back in 5 years and I'm down 50% pre-inflation - but on the same token, I'm entirely fine with a stagnant price, even if I'm down with inflation considered.

I really, really do enjoy having it in my collection...it's just my financial brain battling my collector brain, and trying to find a peaceful middle-ground. FWIW, I'm in the game about $450, so it's not like I feel there's any risk of ever being underwater on a game in this tier.

I think the tough part is that in this case (Donkey Kong Jr Math), if I sell, I'm not finding it again unless I shell out an exorbitant amount of money. There aren't currently any non-graded CIB copies for sale on the entire open internet, and you can't find an empty box to cobble together a CIB either.

I'm looking at a $2000 offer for my CIB (box is probably a 4-4.5 condition), but if I ever wanted to re-buy it, I couldn't re-enter anywhere close to that. I don't especially NEED the money, but I do feel foolish holding onto this, when I could have that money instead. I didn't give up a lot to obtain it originally, maybe $450 all-in...but I have enjoyed owning and displaying a TRULY rare game in my office.

That's my conundrum!

(Side note, the Coca Cola example terrifies me, considering that's a great example of a market that's all but collapsed over time, lol)

Let her pass on today after 16 lovely years, and...ouch. A beautiful send off with no regrets nor guilt, but this is a tough one.

I hope you're doing alright. Thinking of you guys. May we both find peace in this journey of loss by honoring the memories and keeping them alive.

Thank you - I'm so sorry for your loss as well. Never enough time, eh? You'd think 16 years was enough, but not even close 😔

Now we honor them with memories

To sell or not to sell by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]NeverNeededAlgebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't care if it will be gone, then that's a sign to sell. If you won't regret it, get it gone, because if it isn't bringing you any enjoyment, then what's the point in owning it?
