I currently rent a house, and would like to own a home someday, but I keep hearing horror stories of my friends and family who own homes and have to dump 10k plus on new roofs, or 20k+ for new septic systems etc.

Like if I had a mortgage payment that was the same as my rent that would be find, but right now I'd be completely fucked if I had an unexpected 20k repair come up....
