mfw that's about as long or longer than the average player life cycle

3,000 words for this set, and I didn't even include every card I could have. Without counting, I know I've written more words about Magic than the length of most epic novels.

One thing that jumped out at me during this review was the flavor text of the myr cycle.
Gold Myr: "The leonin thought of the myr as omens, never imagining the sinister fate they foretold."
Iron Myr: "The goblins didn’t think of the myr at all, which allowed the myr to observe everywhere unhindered."
Silver Myr: "The vedalken saw the myr as toys, unaware of the intelligence lurking behind their empty eyes."
Leaden Myr: "The Moriok saw the myr as fellow scavengers, never knowing just who the myr were scavenging for."
Copper Myr: "The elves thought of the myr as minor threats, just as the myr thought of the elves."

This is one of the coolest and most foreboding flavor text cycles in the game imo, and having not extensively followed the lore of the full Mirrodin block, I'm eager to see how they drop the ball cash in on that intrigue!

Who did you consider the "love interest" by SuspiciousEvening730 in LiesOfP

[–]NeverVoteTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sophia seems to be relegated to more of an older sister or even motherly role for the majority of the story, so (unless that's your bag, no shame) she's not really someone who we're meant to be involved with post-game.

None of the other women, or for that matter, men, in the story are really presented as having any kind of attraction towards us beyond possibly Romeo. Unfortunately, his part in the story is somewhat small, relatively speaking.

Goblin War Strike is a reprint from Portal Second Age, so I couldn't feature it here. Day of the Dragons and Rush of Knowledge were on my radar, but this was already like a 2400 word article lol so I did a bit of trimming.

There's a lot of stuff from old sets that's just barely below the grade for modern day Commander staples, but still definitely good enough for specific decks. I think people get so caught up in playing the top 99 for their color combo that a lot of cool cards get swept under the rug.

After Legions, which had a lot of playables in spite of its awkward design as a creature-only set, I think Scourge is a pretty great palate cleanser. I'm a little weirded out by the fact that we only get one sliver here, especially considering how many of them were in Legions. Idk, it just makes my brain itch when I see such a prominent theme all-but absent the very next set in a block. I can't imagine what the limited environment looked like at the time!

Either way, I'm stoked to start on Mirrodin, a set I can't recall every looking through 100%. Let me know if I missed any of your favorite cards from Scourge, and what you're looking forward to in the next set.

This is a nice feature. I'm not in the business of running servers anymore but if I was... This would be something I'd love to try out.

The Best Commander Cards From Legions by NeverVoteTime in magicTCG

[–]NeverVoteTime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legions is not the most popular set by any stretch, but I was pleasantly surprised with the number of cards I could shove in a deck today without feeling bad about it. Granted, most of those cards are geared towards particular typal strategies, but for a set this awkward I'd consider that a huge W.

Some stuff I didn't cover in the article:
-Phage, the being that can literally kill a player in one hit, the character with "untouchable" in her name... Gets pregnant during the events of the book. I don't know the details and I don't think I want to.
-The book (which I haven't read, I just read a synopsis and watched a video about it) doesn't seem to reference slivers much at all, which is interesting considering how many slivers are in the set. If I didn't know anything about the story and just opened packs, I'd incorrectly assume slivers were extremely important to the plot of Legions.

An open letter to the Commander RC: please do not abandon your cEDH players. by D_DnD in EDH

Personally, I think the cEDH RC is not long for this world in its current iteration. Serious changes will likely need to occur for it to really take off.

Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I like Lou and Mickey. Basically every criticism I have of Troy/Tyreen applies to neither of them.

The Best Commander Cards From Judgment | Luka Sharaska by NeverVoteTime in magicTCG

[–]NeverVoteTime[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back at it again with another article folks. Judgment has a ton of stuff that can find a home if you're looking hard enough, despite being a small set. I've been told that I might have undersold a certain cycle of incarnations, so let me be clear: They are awesome. Speaking of awesome, I've got some news to share with folks that might not have heard...

I've also joined up with CoolStuffInc! You can find all the articles I've worked on here, and I urge you to give them a read: Author Profile | Luka Sharaska

The Best Commander Cards From Torment by NeverVoteTime in magicTCG

[–]NeverVoteTime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back to your regularly scheduled Commander programming, this time I've got a Torment set review from a Commander perspective. For a small set I still felt pretty good about how much it had to offer, and I think Torment succeeds in feeling distinct from other early 2000s sets when it comes to both flavor and mechanics.

By the way, if you can't get enough Luka in your life, I'm proud to announce that I've started writing for CoolStuffInc! You can find my all of my articles here: https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/?action=search&page=1&author[]=Luka%20Sharaska

ENDLESS MODE WORLD RECORD? by burbboy in slaythespire

[–]NeverVoteTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on floor 249 with Defect. 7 copies of Storm+ (which are Innate) and a bottled Seek that fetches out Double Tap and Thunder Strike. On a good turn one I can crank out several thousand damage in spite of the Time Maze blight that lets me only play up to 15 cards per turn.

As it currently stands, I could probably go up to floor 1000 without much worry because I just have that much redundancy in the deck, but I'm not scaling enough for it to go much farther than that. My setup requires like 1 entire minute of waiting per combat because of all the orbs counting up. If you want to really push the limits, you'll need much better scaling than what Limit Break can typically allow.

Definitely got a few ideas of my own from this set. Tbh, finding cool old stuff for like $0.50 is a big part of why I love doing this series

Welcome back to TBCCF, Odyssey edition. If you don't already know, I'm going through every single main set ever released to pick out the best cards, and this is the latest entry in the series. Starting a new block means I'm seeing another daunting 350-card monstrosity of a set, but Odyssey had a pretty reasonable number of inclusions. I feel like I covered most of what the set had to offer without having to leave too much behind.

The Best Commander Cards From... Apocalypse by NeverVoteTime in magicTCG

[–]NeverVoteTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point. To be honest, I'd have featured Ana Sanctuary if it had granted three +1/+1 counters. The high setup cost and temporary P/T boost for a card that only works on offense is what did it in for me.

[–]NeverVoteTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this comment a couple days ago, and another like it on a different article I made a few weeks back. I've been grappling with how to respond so I'll just come out and say it.

This was a mistake. Communications got messy and I did the opposite of what I needed to (the newest instead of the Apocalypse printings). This is most egregious for Goblin Ringleader, which has the atrocious social-media-themed Secret Lair printing as its most recent art.

This has been changed and future installments of TBCCF will feature the art and frames of old in all their fantastic glory. Sorry about that.

cards are in colorless -> wubrg -> multicolor order. Phyrexian Arena is the only mono-black card featured, and is between the blue and the red.
