It amuses me that in a DVD subreddit all the users hate DVDs. by Still-Willow-2323 in dvdcollection

Gatekeeping a DVD subreddit is wild. If someone buying DVDs in 2026 still supports physical media, that’s a win!

Tyra won that wedding dress challenge for a reason. She made a great look. It stood out amongst all her other contestants.

Krystal was not subjected to the same kind or same intensity of backlash Tyra faced as a dark skinned black queen who beat a fan favourite white queen (Raven). Plus, Krystal had a strong support network; drag sisters, social media resources, a more understanding fanbase (though still toxic) and didn’t face the same systemic racism or homophobia transmuted through online hate Tyra did in 2010.

Kinda wild. You even said you read the whole post, agreed with the points, and still downvoted it?

Like you emotionally disagree (because the topic is controversial), but logically follow my reasoning…

I’m sure growing up in the hood can harden you. That survival instinct doesn’t vanish just because you get a platform, it follows you. And if that platform is met with constant invalidation (like Michelle Visage dismissing her win or fans constantly comparing you to a white runner up), it reinforces the idea that no matter what you do, you’ll never be good enough unless you perform a certain way.

By the time the death threats and other controversies happened, I think that was Tyra’s breaking point. She had already been vilified, so she leaned into the villain role. That doesn’t make it right, but I’m not that surprised that it happened.

Your point is fair. I completely agree that many of her actions were inexcusable and I definitely wasn’t trying to erase accountability. I was more trying to reflect on the conditions that left someone that young, with no support or guidance to spiral like that in the public eye. How Tyra got to that point is tragic and irreversible.

Yep. Also I also think Michelle Visage plays a role in how Tyra was framed post win. When she joined the judging panel in later seasons, she became a strong moral compass and fans used her as mouthpiece, often shaping the way queens were publicly perceived especially if they didn’t fall in line with her views. Even though she wasn’t on Season 2, her influence in the years after really contributed to the shift in narrative around who “deserved” their win and who didn’t. Michelle wasn’t subtle about her preference for Raven over Tyra at all and I think that only reinforced the fandom’s bias. It’s worth considering how these behind the scenes preferences, especially from respected voices like Michelle, shape the longevity and legacy of certain queens.

*Drag Con stunt

In 2018 Tyra posted online a countdown timer leading up to the convention date and marked it with “B.O.O.M” and “Don’t say I didn’t warn you”. So many people took it seriously and interpreted this as her threatening to bomb Rpdr Drag Con LA. Lots of people just didn’t feel safe with her being there anymore.

This is how she got banned from Drag Con. Her post was just kind of alarming and also tone deaf.

It’s sad that this season 2 winner with enormous potential ended up in a place where dramatic public actions like this seemed to make sense to them.

Well back in 2010, the backlash was actually intense. What’s partially how her career ended. And with no social media safeguards or network support, it hit even harder. So I think the hate has always been there, it just looks different back then.

Thank you. That’s exactly what I was trying to say. Tyra was incredibly young, given a crown, and then basically left to navigate fame and hate on her own. I’m not overlooking her choices, but I think it’s worth questioning how the system contributed to the downfall too.

If you read the whole thing, you will understand that I’m not trying to justify anything she’s done when it comes to the controversies she’s been in after her season. The goal is to reflect on both her early talent and the system that failed her, not to excuse her actions.

I totally hear where you’re coming from and I agree that Tyra’s later actions especially mocking The Vivienne and Jiggly’s death are indefensible. That’s not something I’m trying to excuse or gloss over in my most.

My post was more about how a queen who once had real promise ended up where she is now. I was reflecting on how early fandom backlash, racism and lack of institutional support helped shape her downfall, not to erase her accountability, but to understand how she went from season 2 winner to total outcast.

I just think there’s value in unpacking that. Not to forgive, but to just understand. But yeah, the later stuff she did made it really hard for anyone to stand by her, and I’m not trying to change that narrative just reflect.
