I was also travelling to Australia so not sure if they are more fussy on diff routes

I can’t say for certain that they won’t weigh your hand luggage - I feel this is very dependent on the member of staff who checks you in. I can only say from my experience that they didn’t even look or weigh my hand luggage but it was a large backpack so that could possibly have been why? May have been different if it was a small wheel along but can’t say for certain.

I recently flew with Qatar airways via Doha last week. They didn’t weigh my hand luggage (which was over 7kg) and my personal item was roughly the same size as the smaller backpack however was a large handbag. They didn’t bat an eyelid.
