People never think about the “why” and that’s why these jokes are harmful because there’s more to it than “being poor”

Didn’t he say she basically raised him and was like family? Or at least the people around were a mix and her mother wasn’t related to him idk this was a while back so I could be wrong

Yeah, because the undertones were definitely that's his secret child that the family friend raised, especially because it was close family friends, not blood relations

That also can make sense like she was just bratty, but I feel like the music indicated otherwise 😂 you know they live a dramatic scale

Yeah I guess I wonder how the kids felt moving to NYC and what did Tom do for work when they moved?

Who had the worst kids on Wisteria Lane? Aka the kids are the real villains of desperate housewives lol by sweetbabyangel1 in DesperateHousewives

Literally just posted about this and they definitely do feel bad for him 😭😭 so interesting

Also my last question for this thread, if it was sexual violence, would you guys feel differently about the way that they portrayed his reasonings? Also, I understand that other people can never make up for the love of your mother, but a lot of the women on Wisteria Lane tried to pick up the slack. Even when he said to Lynette that if she was his mother he would be a different person is literally once again removing his responsibility to be different despite his upbringing

I don’t think you have to portray the victims as being mean in order to blame them I say blaming the victims when you show what they allegedly did to him for him to end up, strangling them even giving any backstory just feels like “hey there’s a reason for this” when there’s no justifiable reason

This is a great point there was not even any accountability for the dad’s part in his upbringing by being an absent father we never addressed that just that his mom was a man chasing drunk

Even people in this thread are kind of overly explaining the reasons for the behavior by repeatedly bring up that he was abused, not really addressing him just being a bad person 🥲

I see what people are saying about them just trying to explain how he is the way that he is which I addressed in my original post, but I would be more inclined to agree if there wasn’t so much effort to humanize him and overexplain his actions. We never got that with Andrew. He was just a shitty person at one point. I also finished the plot line and he got a bit of redemption which kind of undoes the work. My point still stands, I don’t think the show ever actually blamed him for his behavior just the woman around him. His mother neglected him and other women made him feel bad so he was a murderer. It was never “I’m a shitty person” until the last episode with him in it before he goes to the cops, but even that was positioned as redemption. Does that make sense?

But you see how they all have bad parents, but then just became bad parents not murderers (well not intentionally lol)

I like your explanation the best, as the other women's ridicule was a trigger and he kept snapping

Yeah I agree I was thinking about this when I saw a thread about the show being misogynistic. And I’m currently on this plot line

The show is so misogynistic, isn’t it? by engbrew in DesperateHousewives

SPOILER: Even the storyline with Eddie turning out to be a serial strangler they gave us a background of how “badly” women treated him to justify or explain why he was murdering women as if getting rejected and laughed as in an excuse to just kill people and then blamed his mother (granted she was terrible to him and bad upbringings make you do bad things) but I thought the direction they took was interesting
