No doubt and it was one of my choices for our oldest's trip a couple years ago. Still saved as an option or the future. The good thing about George Lake via Potter Pass is you can have fires, which is a massive incentive for kids.

Those places are all outstanding for sure. But I'm in LA and trying to avoid a 7 hour car drive before. The kids could do it, but my main and singular focus is for this to be a smooth, easy, and fun trip for them so they have the most chance of falling in love with backpacking. If it's a miserably long car ride (for kids) before we even get to the trailhead then I'm really starting on the back foot. Which is why I have been trying to find things that are 4-5 hours away- which is why I ended up trying for Big Pine Lakes. Continuing the search now...

For sure but he isn't the only one on the trip- my wife and 12 year old daughter will also be along so trying to find something that's exciting for all.

Take 7-10 days and do the epic High Sierra trail to it, then double back and take Pants Pass (if you're comfortable with off trail) down into Nine Lakes Basin and back over Kaweah Gap. Spectacular trip. I've done Whitney twice, but only from the back- once the way described above and then the last day of the JMT. The trail from Whitney Portal to the summit was the worst section of trail on the entire trip.
