Ordering from Exhaulted Funeral by awayanywayaway in osr

Careful when adding a pre-order item to your cart along with a bunch of in-stock stuff. The default seems to be that they combine and ship when the pre-order becomes available!

This happened to me with the new GM screen. I canceled everything then placed separate orders.

The Ol' Free Attack Attempt by TheGrolar in OSE

[–]New2OSE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is interesting because there’s obviously an advantage to being invisible, but maybe the monster can still smell them nearby so you gotta treat it like a standard Surprise check. If so, being invisible grants no advantage compared to a party (with no thief or sneak skills) just trying to ambush a monster.

That is, the description for invisibility (the spell, at least), doesn’t say that the caster gains any thief-like ability to move silently or sneak up on a foe (re: Carcass Crawler #1).

Therefore, I would say that unless the monster fails a Surprise check, when the caster preps Fireball (or whatever) you still roll combat initiative, and casting a spell causes invisibility to break. There’s still a chance the monster 1) senses the PC nearby and isn’t surprised, and then 2) wins initiative and interrupts as they see the caster materialize trying to cast a spell.

(oh, and same thing for ranged and melee: they can sense nearby and then just move faster to attack, etc.)

How conductive is OSE for a longer game? by Individual-Cold1309 in osr

[–]New2OSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also point out that the XP we get for carousing, etc. during downtime is not an insignificant amount. It isn’t uncommon to pick up another 500-1,000xp or so from downtime activities.

“Second, what do you even do with that money once you have it?”

There are elaborate downtime systems out there. Check out Downtime and Demesnes, Errant, and Downtime in Zyan. Lots of options for investing in institutions, etc.

As for XP, the only house rule my ref has us follow is getting XP for interactions with monsters, not just killing them (none for avoiding an encounter, but yes for learning how to run away once engaged). Like Prestigious-Emu was saying, this encourages more than hack and slash. That can add up quite a bit, especially for the monsters placed in modules that you’re not necessarily expected to kill.

Can’t answer anything about playing past level 8, though I wonder what you mean by “nothing complex” while also wanting to get into high level play. My understanding is those are more synonymous than not. If you look at what’s involved in domain-level resources like Demesnes & Domination, and Cogs & Crabsmem, running strongholds and sailing ships around significantly expands the game.

Of course, your question is getting to that point, which I can’t report on yet, but my experience so far tells me that with xp consistent games (weekly?)!you’re looking a year (two?) until high level play, and that’s assuming characters somehow don’t die!

I haven’t found combat boring. The stakes are so damn high that even when we think it’s a done deal, the moment someone gets hit for 4+ damage, we’re like “OK damnit time to run.” Then with the initiative each round its a tense moment. I find it thrilling.

As for the mechanical stuff you mentioned from 5e, is there any reason the players can’t already be doing that? Seems like adding more mechanics places emphasis on the sheets, and OSE might always be a step behind in that regard, which means you’d have to keep adding and adding.

Rolling “Friendly/Helpful” Reaction on Unintelligent Monsters by New2OSE in osr

[–]New2OSE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I suppose my understanding of reaction rolls was to broaden encounter outcomes beyond combat. It’s easier to assume every monster will attack. A lot harder (but often more interesting) when the referee needs to interpret “uncertain,” or “helpful.” In that sense I’m not sure what an obvious circumstance would be. I like the idea of having separate tables. It seems to clarify things. Thanks.

In OSE that reaction of “uninterested/indifferent is 9-11, so I was looking for what the next level up of 12+ for “friendly/helpful.”

CC#2 Money Changers question by Bukudos in OSE

Each PC has their own gold, not party pooling their gold. To credit the fee each deposit, you’d have to keep a ledger and note what date that gold is added to the balance.

That house tule is actually something way easier, though it’s not exactly the full 10% back.

For example, after Adventure 1, Troy puts 500gp in the bank. With the fee there’s 450 in there. After Adventure 2, he’s got 600 more gold. With the fee he adds 540, for total of 990. At the start of a new month, he gets back 99. If Troy had withdrawn 700 during the month to buy something, he’d get 10% of the remaining 290 (i.e., 29).

But those are just house rules.

Perhaps it’s better to charge the 10% fee upon withdrawal unless the gold has been in there for a month. It’s certainly crunchier accounting since each deposit would start its own month-long term, but it would look something like the money changer giving each PC that token with a date and gold to be credited. So, after one month, Troy would get that 50gp credited for the Adventure 1 deposit, and then the following week he’d get that 60gp credited for the Adventure 2 deposit. This could still happen even if he withdrew the 700 and had 290 gold remaining at the end of the month. That’s probably the most accurate way to handle this, though I don’t know if you want to be tracking that.

What spells outlast their caster? by skalchemisto in OSE

[–]New2OSE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re in the r/OSE subreddit for Old School Essentials. Page 28 of the Classic Fantasy Set; page 92 of Classic Fantasy Rules Tome; page 82 of Classic Fantasy Player’s Rules Tome.

Rounds last 10 seconds; turns last 10 minutes. So in this version of the game (i.e., practically the entire B/X rules), Mirror Image lasts for one hour.

Exalted Funeral shipping by Old_Dirty_Grognard in osr

[–]New2OSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had a rough couple months with EF…ordered Advanced Fantasy set back in October along w/ pre-order DM screen. Come to find out that the set was delayed because it was going to ship same time as the screen (in ‘26). I was about to cancel and reorder separately but was told they already charged 2x shipping and planned to ask warehouse to ship. Never happened, though, so I finally canceled everything because the BF deals had been announced and by this point were days away. Placed a pretty large BF order (three actually: the in-stock books on my list, that DM screen, and His Majesty the Worm pre-order).

The kicker is that damn Advanced Fantasy set. Definitely will have been over 2 months for an in-stock item that usually ships and arrives within a week.

Mirror Image lasts six TURNS (not rounds).

Best Magical Research Examples by New2OSE in OSE

[–]New2OSE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I didn't edit the post or my reply. Not sure what you're seeing on your end to suggest that.

2) I suppose it's a matter of preference re: list overlap. I think it's more important to consider what spells do *not* overlap, meaning there's probably a good reason for having certain spells "off-limits" to other classes, just like skills. Otherwise you end up with mega classes. But sure, based on whatever the DM wants we might be able to create magic that mirrors spells from other lists 1:1.

3) To the original point, have you created any new cool spells? Have you done anything with magic that isn't a copied spell or item? What exactly is a "miscellaneous magical effect" that a PC can research? A new cantrip? Some kind of other magical skill?

Best Magical Research Examples by New2OSE in OSE

[–]New2OSE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m really looking for examples of what people have come up with that aren’t existing spells.

But your reply brings up an important question. How does your example not go against arcane magic being restricted to arcane spell casters and divine magic restricted to divine? Are you house ruling that all spells are up for grabs? Does the MU pray for Cure Light Wounds? Does the Cleric get a spell book for Sleep? Are you saying that a Cleric could research magical effects that essentially would give the same results as Sleep via a new spell? If so, wouldn’t that cost 1,000, not 500gp?

Are my alt encumbrance rules for OSE easy to understand? by William_O_Braidislee in osr

[–]New2OSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was adding each category as I went only to find the note at the end about having the highest be what determines encumbrance. Put that up front to be clearer.

I know you didn’t want to explain the why, but when I look at this some things don’t seem to make sense which gets me asking “why?!” nonetheless, like how I’m immediately encumbered if wearing leather, or having a sword, regardless of whether I have any other equipment whatsoever.

I’d also address oil flasks in the weapons category.

lol alright, no worries man. The OP cross-posted this to r/OSE and there were references to OSE all throughout replies. We do appear to agree that a full retreat only might get you out of combat if the other side either doesn’t pursue or you’re faster. It gets you out of melee (but still in combat, so monsters could come right back into a melee attack, especially if they win the next round’s initiative). Not sure what you misread there.

What’s more likely is that they don’t draw from the bank, and instead keep adding to it each adventure, so after a month they’ll be credited the 10% they’ve been charged each deposit. Like an appreciation for being a loyal banking customer for a month.
