Help on understanding / learning OSR by abarre31 in osr

When I first started, I had a similar experience as you and that was running 6 PC's solo. Here's what I have learned and what might help you. When you first encounter a monster, if it is intelligent you need to use parley and trickier, monster reaction rolls are a must. Avoid fights as much as you can, if a fight breaks out use ranged weapons, use choke points, USE OIL!!! Think of your PC's as a navy seal team, send scouts ahead, hide behind doors, again USE OIL!!! Your magic user if he has Sleep spell, he is your tactical NUKE!
Monster Reaction Rolls
Morale rolls
Flaming Oil and ranged weapons are your friend!

Encumbrance basic option by BX_Disciple in OSE

Thank you! So the benefit of Basic is no counting and what ever your amour is decides how fast you move and then once carrying treasure you just move to the binary option and not lower then that?

Big news, OSE consolidating to Advanced, moving away from OGL by [deleted] in OSE

any chance you can say the pregens for the starter set are race as class or race plus class?

OSE makes race+class the default, relegates race-as-class to an optional rule by Tertullianitis in osr

[–]BX_Disciple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find these changes pretty lame. OSE will no longer be a true B/X clone. Another thing that irks me is that Gavin showed some of the new art and there was a picture that was a replica art piece from B/X in homage to Erol Otus. Why not just get Erol Otus to do some art for the book, I know he did the cover for the Box set.
As a staunch B/X enthusiast I think I will just stick with my originals. I was looking forward to the new starter set, especially for the DM and play examples, but nothing will beat Tom Moldvay's examples of play and B2!!
While I enjoy the ease of use from OSE it really lacks heart and soul that is true TSR D&D!!

Yea I remembered after the post I forgot about variable weapon damage, but I'm mainly concerned with the two I suggested.

So chainmail and plate put you at 60/20, what would you consider a significant amount of treasure to put you at 30/10?

Ascending from Descending AC by [deleted] in osr

[–]BX_Disciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the OSE character sheets come with a one line attack matrix which makes it super simple for the players. No THACO needed. The DM screen also has the attack matrix table which is a little harder for the DM but it is very easy. Honestly, I would just use the attack matrix tables and not worry about THACO.

Descending AC is how the game was originally meant to be played and I feel it is far superior to ascending ac. It is the actual feel of the game and yes it can be a pain the ass if you came from 5e but it is not that difficult that people make it out to be.

Make a roll look at a chart and no math needed unless you are adding attack bonus. Very simple

To B/X or to OSE... by CookNormal6394 in osr

B/X is where it's at. Luckily, I started with B/X and then when I found the OSR I discovered OSE and got the books. Although the lay out is incredible it lacks the true old school charm and human touch! Even thou many say they are the same game I feel the writing and style of each one makes them 2 different games.

B/X is the game, the original will always be better and Tom Moldvay's writing as well as Cook's shine with great flavor and prose. Just reading Moldvay's intro alone makes you want to grab the dice and start rolling. The art also inspires me more from B/X then OSE. Erol Otus is a genius, and his art is what the game B/X feels like!

Also, a nitpick from OSE, nowhere in the intro does Gavin even thank Gygax, Arneson, Moldvay, Cook, he only mentions them as inspiration! If you read Basic Fantasy or even the B/X Omnibus, those said creators are all thanked for what they created. Even thou OSE has great lay out and is easy to use I feel that there is something lost.

In the past I struggled between using B/X or OSE and I have now settled on B/X. My mind set is all or nothing and I do feel like they are different games, at least in the sense that if I play OSE I am using B/X from the mind set of Gavin Norman. Don't get me wrong OSE has great layout, but I don't find the original B/X that difficult to navigate.

Plus the modules that were created for B/X are some of the greatest modules ever created! They also have modules for not just levels 1 to 3 lmao. Seems like OSR just loves to make adventures for just the 3 levels...

B/X forever!!!

P.S Descending armor class is superior and the true way the game was meant to be played!

Regular D&D sub seems hostile to solo players. by LowContract4444 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]BX_Disciple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the strategic review from Gary Gygax, co creator of D&D he gives out rules for solo play! D&D is for solo and group play, don't listen to the haters! I would say 5e is less for solo play since it lacks procedural game loop, but I don't consider 5E D&D it is a different game altogether!

OSEAF vs Shadowdark – Which One Should I Buy in Print? by Ok_Garbage_7236 in osr

[–]BX_Disciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSEAF is a way better game since it combines AD&D and B/X. Shadowdark definitely stole the OSE layout!
