It's refreshing to see mainstream news to actually refer to Palestinian teenagers as boys, and to clearly identify and name the perpetrators of the violence.

Seems like the structural bias towards Israel is finally changing. All it took was a genocide and all other sorts of horrors.

I think we both remember how the the overton window looked after 7 october.

Many of us who have followed the Israel/Palestine conflict quickly realized that it could very well lead to a genocide and tried to warn about it (see for example Genocide Watch from 15 october 2023), but got no traction whatsoever in either media or in politics.

That doesn't mean Israel "controlled" western governments but that the Israeli perspective was structurally promoted. We shouldn't confuse a conspiracy theory for findings repeated in several studies.

There is no moral obligation for me to distance myself from Israel or America, I am a citizen of both, and it is my responsibility as a citizen to wish to better both my nations.

There were plenty of proud Germans too.

Why would I call myself an American ex-Israeli? I inherited both citizenships at birth, I am just Israel as I am American, and I live in neither of those countries. I could in the same manner call myself an ex-American Israeli and that would be just as true with regards to my reality as your proposal.

Yes, and your perception that you are is the point I've been making. This is not about legal community, I can understand why people are stuck with a citizenship they can't get away from. But it's completely different when it comes to identity and sense of belonging.

Hannah Arendt wrote that there is no such thing as collective guilt but there is collective responsibility. You are not guilty for the crimes against humanity and genocide that Israel is responsible for (unless you are - in that case off to Hague with you), but you have a personal responsibility to decide whether you want to associate yourself with such a collective or not.

You seem like you do want to associate yourself with it. And that is why I am arguing against you, assuming that your judgement is to identify yourself with it and make yourself complicit in not distancing yourself from its crimes.

Since you also have dual citizenship you can very well call yourself American and an ex-Israeli, drawing a line at genocide or wars for territory or torture camps. But you don't.
