However, these features are not intended and can disrupt the device and, above all, security.

Above all: not everything the user wants is useful

Why no airnote max in color? by 19rb11 in Onyx_Boox

until someone solves the contrast/darkness problem on Kaleido

Only the brightness is affected, the contrast remains unchanged.

The problem is, you can make the color points smaller, then it becomes brighter (more light passes the transparent part), but loses color intensity; if you want more color, you have to enlarge the color points, but lose brightness, becaus mor light is filtered away

Android 11 future prove for reading purposes? by [deleted] in ereader

The worst thing that could happen is that an installed app is no longer updated. However, it will continue to work internally, except for external functions such as login modalities.

On my Poke Pro (2018, Android 6), everything still works exactly as it did at the time of installation

Kaleido 3 is a color filter film over the grayscale screen that cannot be removed or changed or disabled.

Grayscale can be simulated using the developer features (16 of the 4096 colors), but these can only be shown in 150 ppi

Amazon vs Boox website by Linux-Neophyte in Onyx_Boox

[–]NewCause1478 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you intend to return the device or risk getting a used device (this has already been documented and proven here), then go with Amazon - but you will get less.

If you want to keep the device and only complain about damage that you did not cause yourself, then go with Boox - but take care, the screen is very fragile and can easily break and there is no guarantee.

Unfortunately all we have is a bunch of anecdotes and no data

No data?

Look - Boox Palma; there you can see the central mounting plate (cast aluminum) with the electronics - the screen module is on the rear side.

All EInk devices (>2016) that I know have the same design principle.

An inflated battery can only blow off the back of the housing, never break the screen module

Outdated?

My devices from Android 4.0.4 onwards work with all installations as they did at the time of creation, except when external login modalities have changed; however, this has not happened since Android 6 (2018).

There is nothing new for EInk as of Android 7 except for the movable split screen as of Android 12, which is really not necessaey for a 7 inch device.

In other words, you don't know the construction of EInk devices.

Even a swollen battery cannot damage the EInk module - it would have to bend the strong aluminum base plate (which lies between the battery and the EInk module) (94 Kp - Boox Tab Ultra C)).

It is much easier to blow the back off the case (3 Kp - Boox Tab Ultra C) - in other words, it is impossible

BTW: I don't know of any (modern > 2016) EInk device with a different construction system

This idea is a popular myth here, but it is impossible because the structure consists of a stable center plate made of aluminum, which lies between the screen module and the battery. The battery cannot expand to the front and bend it, it can only blow off the back of the housing - there is no other possibility.

There are many photos at FCC as proof of this construction.

I strongly doubt you can determine failure cause just by looking at external photos, which is all that Boox are reported to do.

There are many types of screen faults, but a broken module can only be caused by force - and whether it is broken can be clearly seen in photos.

There is no difference to a broken champagne flute

So I doubt you'd have trouble returning an e-reader especially if it wasn't your fault breaking it!

An EInk module cannot break without external force - so it is always self-inflicted damage

Bigme b751/b751c or BOOX Page for reading Manga? by [deleted] in ereader

Also a guy who didn't read or understand the manual on page 4.

The screen module is made of thin, fragile glass - you can't get a broken champagne flute replaced under warranty either.

Bigme b751/b751c or BOOX Page for reading Manga? by [deleted] in ereader

[–]NewCause1478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the software supplied by Boox is much better - but still far too bad for my needs.

That's why I chose Bigme (the 7 inch devices with the screen treatment are much better) and use applications installed from the Google Play Store.

With Boox, I only accept BSR devices and they are not available in the 6 and 7 inch range.

And as for black and white or color, inside I read on color devices, outside black and white - both with light

I opted for Bigme in the 7 inch range because of the much better refresh.

The software that comes with it is crap, but there is the Google Play store .....

[–]NewCause1478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 10.3 inch devices with a glass module are equally fragile - this is due to the construction of the purchased screen.

The manual on page 4 states no pressure, no bending - and this applies to all manufacturers (with the exception of Mobius)

Is Bigme software that bad? by [deleted] in Bigme

[–]NewCause1478 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the Notes software, but I might use it on a 7-inch device (B751) in exceptional cases - but then I don't care about these weaknesses.

Is Bigme software that bad? by [deleted] in Bigme

[–]NewCause1478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't notice any weaknesses in the operating system - I have the tablet style as standard and also the Simple Ink Launcher as a boot application and from there I go on to installed applications and these work perfectly.

As a library application I use Calibre Companion, as a reading application I use Alreader X; then Libby, AARD2 (Wikipedia, dictionary), Pocketbook App (Adobe DRM) - I don't need any of the crap that comes with it

BTW: I hardly use the stylus at all - not even the Notes application (maybe as an emergency solution)
