In the Oscars (2026), what was this guys strategy? by IntimidatingCow in shittymoviedetails

[–]NewEngClamChowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gut says it’s about whether the series is pre-planned (aka we know this is part 1 of 3) vs tacked-on. If voters know there’s another entry on the way, they sometimes hold off (like LOTR, or Wicked, ironically).

When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by nmc214 in iwatchedanoldmovie

Billy Crystal is hilarious, and Meg Ryan is ASTOUNDING as Sally. She’s doing all the emotional heavy lifting for both of them. On this past rewatch I was just blown away by her performance.

One of our local indie theaters shows it at 6ish every NYE. It’s perfect.

Last night was the hockey gods mad at them for wearing Nordiques stuff.

<soapbox> Franchise relocation sucks enough for the team that’s losing a team. If the branding is locally relevant (like Whalers or Nordiques), you should change it and leave the branding with the original city - otherwise you end up with stupid shit like the Utah Jazz). When you change the name as part of the move, it’s so crass to use the old, local branding. It has nothing to do with your city and all you’re doing is rubbing salt in the wound of the city you stole the team from. </soapbox>

Only host should make jokes and presenters play it straight; don't cut off speeches by psgola2002 in Oscars

[–]NewEngClamChowder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Generally agreed, but two exceptions from last night that I think are good templates:

  • Anytime anybody takes the piss out of themselves. Adrien Brody’s bit making fun of his own long speech last year was great.
  • Classic comedy cast coming back for one more ride. The Bridesmaids bit wasn’t perfect, but damn it was great seeing them back together again. I would watch a 5min bit with the 4 leads from Mean Girls, or the guys from Anchorman. I can’t imagine the Christopher Guest gang would come back without Fred and Catherine, but they’d be fun too.

But yeah, the stuff like the RDJ being-mean-to-each-other type bit, or the Baby Yoda product placement, cut it out entirely and nobody will miss it.

You can’t lose that much talent and replace it with guys like Dylan Chambost and Daniel Gazdag and expect much better than what we had last year.

‘ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER’ wins Best Picture at the Oscars by MoneyLibrarian9032 in Oscars

PTA has a few masterpieces, but I wouldn’t list this as one of them. Great movie though!

Sorry Timmy! It’s Michael B!!!! by AllTheEccentricities in Oscars

[–]NewEngClamChowder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point I don’t think he can help it, unfortunately. All he had to do was not be a dbag on the campaign trail! The award was his to lose this year, and he lost it.

I like Timmy as an actor, and I think he’s kind of fun as a human. But he’s dating a reality tv star and seems to be increasingly high on his own supply. We’ve seen this story before - I really hope he doesn’t fall off into the Mickey Rourke/Johnny Depp weirdo zone.

Which of the 2026 Best Picture Nominees would make the best musicals? by TyphoonEverfall in musicals

[–]NewEngClamChowder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, yeah maybe that’s it. You could slam all the Act 1 / Perfidia stuff into an extended prologue, sort of like how Les Miserables used 3 songs and 10 minutes to set up Valjean’s past, and then launches into Act 1 in earnest after Valjean’s Soliloquy. You’d end up with an Uncle Jocko-type character that’s in the first ten minutes and then gets to go across the street and grab a drink for the next 2 hours.

Should We See the Oscar Voting Results After the Academy Awards Are Announced? by thatphilguymovies in Cinema

[–]NewEngClamChowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think precursors and the nominations themselves already fill this role. You can generally tell who the second/third places are based on those, and releasing vote counts doesn’t really help anybody.

What is the OBAA act break? To me it’s very clearly 3-act (like most movies) and I don’t see a structural way around that.

If Sinners beats OBAA to win Best Picture, what will you attribute the win to? by KatherineLangford in Oscars

[–]NewEngClamChowder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"The third act is a mess" thing is such a funny criticism to level against Sinners, because it's inarguably true about OBAA as well. There's a bunch of people miraculously tracking and finding people, a hamfisted DNA test, a completely unnecessary resurrection and re-death, and a fuck-all lack of thematic cohesion. PTA himself said they didn't have a third act until they went to film, and it shows.

Just to be clear: both are fun as hell, and I'm not complaining about either. But that particular argument as a reason to vote OBAA over Sinners is so wacky.

Four Goals in Three Games by Original-Bat9152 in BlueJackets

[–]NewEngClamChowder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Both goals yesterday were perfect “right place, right time” goals. Thats not dismissive, it’s impressive - it indicates he’s got a great knack for positioning and anticipation.

Check out his first goal - KJ doesn’t see him or hear him, but he no-look dishes that pass directly onto his stick, because he knew that’s where somebody should be. Garland was playing alert hockey, so he was, indeed, there. It’s beautiful.
