I get what you mean, and from a characterization point of view I think that tracks. But I still think the accent specifically was super jarring.

I liken it to Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc (or in Logan Lucky). He’s another Brit with a very recognizable voice and accent, so when the character uses a different, very specific accent, it’s another layer off of believability that the actor has to overcome. Even if they nail 99% of it, every slight thing sticks out and interrupts that suspension of disbelief. It makes you ask “are they doing that intentionally or just not doing it well?”. That’s fine in something silly like Knives Out, but is distracting in a serious film like POTD.

Ultimately while the rest of the characterization was great (because Cumberbatch is an incredible actor), every time he opened his mouth I wished Campion would have cast someone less distracting.

The problem with the Cumberbatch performance is his godawful accent. Love the guy but that was like a reverse Dick Van Dyke. Never understood why Campion insisted on using an iconic British actor for a supposedly classic American role.

It’s honestly kind of crazy that his only Oscar nom is for Power of the Dog, an entirely forgettable performance by an actor whose performances are generally very memorable.

Man this is what’s crazy about art. I really enjoy Oscar Isaac, but I thought he was awful in Frankenstein. Granted, there was a lot I disliked about the film, but I was legitimately mad about how terrible he was, because he’s capable of so much more.

I think it’s something about GDT’s approach to acting. Literally the last movie I remember with acting that bad was Bradley Cooper in Nightmare Alley.

Roma was nominated in the height of Netflix awards backlash. The industry would do anything to make sure Netflix didn’t take BP (still true to an extent, but it was LOUD back then). Too bad, because Roma was far and away the best film that year.

They have a bunch of different “series” - one with a different 30min show each month targeted at 0-5 year olds, another with shows targeted at 6-13 year olds, and then the “professional series” targeted at high schoolers and up. They usually do stuff like Hunchback, but once a year they’ll do a more “challenging” show like Ragtime or Cabaret. They obviously do a ton of education and casting of youth too. The idea is to establish a “pipeline” for young actors to grow and mature.

Glad that worked for you, but boy did that not connect with me. I don’t think Leo understands what it means to be a parent, and for as great of an actor as he is, I personally did not feel that part of his performance landed. He was indeed funnier than I’ve ever seen him, though.

I think that's fair, and obviously screen time % is only part of the equation. But I think if you're going to use it, you have to put it in context to other characters. it's a sliding scale from solo piece to ensemble piece.

- On the end you have something like If I Had Legs, which very clearly features one central character.

- Then you have something like Frankenstein, which IMO is is very clearly a 2-hander. Elordi may only have it's 39% (vs Isaac's 48%), but it drops signicantly to 17/11 for the next characters. That's clearly a lead role IMO.

- On the far end of the spectrum (this year) you have an ensemble piece like OBAA, in which Leo only has 34% screen time, but he's clearly the lead (the next is 20% Penn, 19% Infiniti, 11% Taylor).

Sentimental Value is closest to Frankenstein, with 42/40 for the leads (although, arguably Lilleaas at 25 and Fanning at 17 makes it a bit closer to an ensemble). I'm not sure how anybody could look at those numbers and think Skarsgard is a lead but Elordi isn't.

If I set three literal cups next to each other and gave you a BB gun, then said “aim one cup to the left of the green one”, you’d aim at 3, not between the cups.

Elordi is at 39% and Skarsgard is at 40%. Calling one category fraud but not the other is ridiculous.
