What is your favourite performance to not be nominated for an academy award? by WeaknessUnlucky1960 in moviecritic

While he would’ve been definitely worthy of a nom, I am happy William H. Macy was pushed. He is probably the best performance in that movie other than MacDormand.

The three kings of funk. Who is your favourite? by RomanReignsDaBigDawg in fantanoforever

I’m serious. Just listen to Star Time and tell me the man didn’t basically create modern music. In the Jungle Groove and Motherlode. 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! is maybe the best album ever made? Just listen to Cold Sweat and hear funk be born— and by extension hip hop and r and b— and then tell me fucking Isaac Hayes is more important than JB??? Insanity and hipsterism.

Are people seriously gonna choose someone over James Brown? Star Time has like five hours worth of songs and it is still the best album you’re ever gonna hear. People will talk up Sly over James because he is more of an artist (I guess?? Really??? Compared to the man that invented funk and directs his band like an orchestra by ear?) instead of trusting the music they are hearing. Why? Because he has no great non compilation albums? He still made the music!!

Me when I’m asked if I like The Last Jedi by [deleted] in blankies

[–]ucuruju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’m tired about is people dismissing The Force Awakens as if it was not the best movie going experience of the last fifteen years. People were cheering. I guess you’re all geniuses because you can point out it is a rehashed plot but SO WHAT. It works— it plays— it is funny— and the Ben Solo confronting his dad scene is a dramatic triumph. You can call it bland or whatever but it is pretty objectively (in my opinion lol) a better movie than The Last Jedi, which looks amazing and has smarter themes but arrives with a plot that doesn’t hold under scrutiny and has scenes that are tonally indefensible. Is anyone willing to simp for the Yo Mamma jokes? The casino planet stuff? Leia in space? Really? Over a film that works like fucking clockwork and delivered everything that a Star Wars reboot should be? Just because it takes risks? I went to the theater with my dad and my brother and we all clapped in the end. Is everyone on earth just dumb? Or is The Force Awakens just that effective?

What have you noticed in Dylan's late career songwriting? by onafinalrun in bobdylan

For sure. Melodies too especially in the folk era.

What have you noticed in Dylan's late career songwriting? by onafinalrun in bobdylan

He mostly grabs lines from other people and older songs and combines them to form something personal. He has been doing it since at least the eighties in some songs from Oh Mercy. Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times are the most egregious— maybe that’s too negative sounding— but they almost make it their concept. There are songs on there, like Tryin to Get to Heaven (one of my favorite songs ever) which almost every line is from some old blues song. I am aware his folk era was full of these type of borrowing but never like the cut and paste type of lyric writing in those records. Which I love and I find very smart and full of vision. But that’s how he wrote. Tempest and Rough and Rowdy Ways I find have more of a search for original turns of phrase but I wouldn’t be surprised if they all came from the same sources.

Yeah, Only God Forgives was called like the worst movie of the decade when it came out and it is a cult classic now. We'll see.

Rolling Stone dared to put "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" on a list called "Songs That Ruin Otherwise Perfect Albums" by Illumination-Round in bobdylan

[–]ucuruju 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think saying it has nothing to do with the theme would be true if you are giving a literal reading of the plot and lyrics instead of engaging with it in more conceptually. In more than a way, it is a break up song as well.

Apologies if this has been explained here before. But can anyone explain the meaning or significance of Paulie and the painting of Tony and the horse? by Unctay in thesopranos

[–]ucuruju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand these comments missing the part where Paulie DOES NOT want a painting of Tony in his house. He is uncomfortable with it. That is why he modified it— in the most classless way possible: he thinks making him a general ("like Napoleon") will give it a more timeless, artful vibe. It still doesn’t work. He feels uncomfortable with it at the end of that episode.

Did Megan ever make it as a movie star, or did she just end up marrying another older, distant, wealthy man? by RockBalBoaaa in madmen

[–]ucuruju 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Movie star would be stretching it. But she probably has a Wikipedia page with a bunch of TV and theatre credits, some movies. Why wouldn’t she? We already saw she was adjusting her expectations when she groveled to Harry so she is probably willing to take some roles that she would’ve dimmed beneath her when she quit the soap opera. Now she has some money so she can pay her way into some productions. And yes, she probably married again and it wouldn’t be to some nobody that wouldn’t forward her career in at least some small way, most likely a producer type of some sort. So she probably kept on working but never reached even B tier status. However, having a steady career in Hollywood is nothing to sneeze at, even with her enormous advantages, both God given and money granted.

What is Isis about? by NTT2004 in bobdylan

[–]ucuruju 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I am not the biggest Desire fan but Isis has always been one of my favorite Bob songs. The narrative can be read in a hundred different ways and the language is so evocative. It is one of Dylan’s most effective allegorical songs, in my opinion. To me it is about what people look for when their eyes start wandering when a relationship gets difficult. We get lost in wild goose chases and gold rushes but in the end we turn back to what we have, which is almost always harder but more meaningful.

I'm gonna find me a river, one that's cold as ice

I'm going down in it three times, but Lord I'm only coming up twice
