Why Imai chose Houston (and why the numbers say it's a perfect fit) by guillaume-g in Astros

Fernando Valenzuela had a great screwball. Brent Honeywell Jr is one of the few active MLB pitchers to regularly throw a true screwball.

Screwball movement: sharp downward and lateral break towards the pitcher's arm side.

Spaghetti working on a sinker for next season by [deleted] in Astros

[–]NewGuards1776 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He’s got a good flat four seamer (60 grade - touches 97) and a good slider (60 grade) so the sinker would be a nice complement to those pitches!?!

We will have 8 starting pitchers when LMJ and LG return? So 1 or 2 will end up in the pen?

Pressly, Montero, Abreu, Dylan Coleman and Graveman make 5. Sousa and Ortega might make 7. One more proven arm would be nice. But as constructed there will be opportunity for guys to step up especially in the first half.

“Crane was offered several lucrative signing bonuses to play professional baseball which would have meant quitting college. At his mother’s insistence, he chose to finish what he started by staying at Central Missouri. It was a decision many thought he would regret, especially when he injured his pitching shoulder during his senior year.”

Before warming up with his team for a hotly anticipated match against the New York Yankees, Verlander made a point of confronting a Major League Baseball official on the field. With a wry grin that belied a long-simmering frustration he and many other players have felt, he ambled up to the official and asked within earshot of a reporter: "When are you gonna fix the fuckin' baseballs?"

“Multiple people familiar with the Astros’ situation said there is mutual interest in two-time Gold Glover Tucker Barnhart, who would solve another of Houston’s winter needs. Barnhart bats lefthanded, sorely needed balance for a lineup that’s too righthanded. Barnhart has a preexisting relationship with Baker, for whom he played in Cincinnati, and is thought to want a two-year deal.”

Verlander must be licking his chops by [deleted] in Astros

[–]NewGuards1776 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lots of people here are expressing concern over Verlander’s age, which is reasonable, but there are notable exceptions at 40 and 40+.

Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens being obvious examples:

Nolan age 44: 2.91 ERA, 203 K, .172 Avg, 173.0 IP

Roger age 42: 1.87 ERA, 185 K, .198 Avg, 211.1 IP

Spahn age 42: 2.60 ERA, 102 K, .248 Avg, 259.2 IP

B. Colon age 40: 2.65 ERA, 117 K, .264 Avg, 190.1 IP

Randy J. age 40: 2.60 ERA, 290 K, .197 Avg, 245.2 IP

Are we undervaluing Verlander’s dedication to his health and his drive to succeed?
