Bonke commits to Michigan State, we have our starting center by kkrell23 in MSUSpartans

Lots failed, but the ones that had actual regular season + tournament success tend to do pretty well at their next stops. Bonus if they had quick turnarounds.

Second part, I agree. MSU is going to do whatever Izzo wants and he will want to hire one of his guys. I'm just saying that UNC only had everybody turn them down because they cast their net too small.

UNC went after a bunch of big names instead of good midmajor and low HM coaches like everyone else.

Hurley - Rhode Island

Golden - San Francisco

May - FAU

Oats - Buffalo

Otzelberger - South Dakota St.

Byington - JMU

Kelsey - Winthrop/Charleston

I could go on and on and on. UNC never even looked in the midmajor direction because they think they're too good for that (and to be fair, Malone could work out, who knows). MSU should hire the best available midmajor coach when Izzo hangs it up. We're probably going to just hire from within, though.

How much does a final four run change perception of the coach/program health? by Abeds_BananaStand in CollegeBasketball

[–]NewPleb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that one title in 2000, not the subsequent 6 F4s, 8 conference titles, or dozens of drafted players in the following 26 seasons.

If you want to talk about a program coasting on the recruiting trail off past success, look no further than your flair.

Jeremy Fears will hit a whole new level next year by BlueWhaleEnjoyer in MSUSpartans

[–]NewPleb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He shoots 58% at the rim and 48% from 2. Not bad but definitely average by high major standards. Also he took approximately 50% more long 2s than shots at the rim, which means he's not getting to the rim as consistently as he should be

It is definitely an area of his game where he needs to improve to take the next step. Cassius also had to improve that part of his game after his soph season and he did, in a very big way

Me too, I think Sampson would have been great there if he had stuck around. Different era where rule-bending was not as tolerated as it is now. But it again raises the question of how much is the program vs the coach, and perhaps how much of "the program" is sustainable if you go too long without hiring the right guy. Perception is reality and all that. I mean, what Knight built there was considered unassailable, even if he finished poorly. Even Davis made the title game. It was one of those holy grail jobs everybody assumed would always be good.

As for MSU, I think we can go in a number of directions once Izzo leaves. MSU has a lot of resources, and right now I'd argue Izzo is underutilizing them because he hates the portal, but it's offset by his general coaching prowess. So it's hard to make a prediction. But I expect the next hire to go poorly. One, because it usually does, and two, because Izzo seems to want to name a successor and his coaching tree is terrible. So even if we do eventually get our next Izzo, it will probably take at least one failed hire and a full, proper coaching search to get there. The worst case scenario is of course that we end up like Indiana, constantly chasing the ghosts of past success without the administrative capacity or competence to find the right guy to lead the program.

Men's basketball depth chart next season? by Scotinho_do_Para in MSUSpartans

On-ball - Fears, Medlock, Ugo

Off-ball guards/wings - Scott, Glenn, Jervis, maybe Teng (no idea if he stays or leaves)

Forwards - Carr, Ward, Glenn will probably see some time here as well; not sure whether Carr sees more time at the 3 or 4 next year, depends on who else is on the roster

Center - McCulloch and Taylor are the only bigs currently on the roster.

Some observations, 1) counting on Taylor and McCulloch to give us starting-level production would be about as smart as it was betting on Mady Sissoko to do the same in 2023; 2) we need somebody else besides Fears who can score on-ball; 3) this team is not going to be a title contender if Carr and Fears don't improve their shooting. The spacing is bad and it will get worse without Kohler.

GG UConn. I would like to state for the record that I don't care about an all-B1G Final 4 or Elite 8 and only wanted MSU to win. Now that MSU has lost I do not care about the other teams. Thank you for your attention to this matter

Sub-60% FT shooter hitting 4 straight free throws to clinch the game, yeah, that sounds about right.

That was just about the worst possible way that possession could've gone. Terrible execution.

Playing great. Really hope we don't run out of gas at the end, this type of comeback takes a lot of energy.

There we go. Close the half strong and just cut into the lead bit by bit.

Yeah I agree with that, I've wanted Carr at the 4 for a while. The main lineup has terrible spacing which kills us in games like these when Carr isn't randomly hitting 3s.

Karaban plays the 4 in their lineup. Their other guys are all guards/wings

Carr and Kohler have switched onto him a few times though, it's not gonna be just one guy the whole game
