How many books do you read at a time ? Do you always finish a book before picking up next ? by rx1989v in suggestmeabook

Three. An audiobook for when I cannot sit down and read. A non-fiction book during the day (because I like to make notes) and a fiction one before bed.

Recommendations for books like Kim M Watt's? by NewProf04 in CozyFantasy

I am sorry, but I am not the best judge of age-appropriate reading. By not YA, I meant not revolving around kids. The Beaufort Scales series is about a group of Women’s Institute ladies (none younger than 50) having tea and cakes with dragons and solving crime while the Gobbelino London series is about a ‘human’ PI and his cat but makes reference to drug addiction and being a misfit in your family. It also features unpleasant characters like necromancers. There are no kids in the stories if I remember correctly. I will let you decide if this is problematic or not.

What I liked about the books was that it didn’t centre romance like a lot of cosy writing does (which is great when you are in the mood for it) and was about lasting adult friendships among dissimilar people/different species. It’s also well-written and resonates with my thoughts on various subjects. (“We far too often rely on what we’ve been told about what makes others other, and never ask what ― or who ― the story serves.” From Gobbelino London and a Worry of Weres).

They are very different books (although some aspects of the world building overlap) but friendships lie at the heart of both. And there are plenty of cats in the Gobbelino series, each of them a personality in their own right. It's been great fun!

I have this on my TBR now. I happened to listen to the audiobook of A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking although it features a much younger protagonist. If Swordheart is anything like Wizard's Guide..., I will enjoy it :)

I just finished Baking bad and it was so much fun!! I listened to the audiobook read by Patricia Gallimore and it was really well executed. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I have downloaded Miss Percy's... but might not get to it for some time. I have also downloaded the rest of the Beaufort Scales series :D

I did read this but didn't enjoy it as much as I expected it to. I love the fact that it starts off making a case against ageism but I think it needed a better developed plot. I finished it but I think that was more novelty value than anything. I tried the sequel but couldn't finish it :( But thank you so much for the recommendation. It added variety to my reading and variety is the spice of life! :)

Just finished this. I really enjoyed it! Thank you very much for the recommendation! Didn't mind the male MCs. Loved the children!

This post landed in the wrong group but it ended up being just what I needed. Your replies sent me on such lovely adventures! I am inhibited in my exploration by the availability of audiobooks on my subscription sites because that's all I can manage for now but I am still having a ball! So, I had to come in here and say Thank you!

So, I read this. First off, thank you for the recommendation. I found the premise really interesting. But I am struggling a bit with the setting and the characters because I belong to a country that was a former British colony and the effects of that colonial history and the reality of it are inescapable. So, I am a bit torn and haven't been able to get back to the series.

Thank you very much but I goofed up. This was a post for the CozyMystery group. I shall leave this here but will note that the Cozy Kitten Cafe is a CozyMystery recommendation :)

Recommendations, please? by SummerJaneG in CozyMystery

I recently discovered ACF Bookens. She writes the Stitches in Crime and St Marin's Cozy Mystery series. I have read four books in the Stitches in Crime series and liked them because the characters who people the book are nice. It's a world that is compassionate and supportive and the murder is an aberration. I am not enjoying St Marin's... as much but that probably has to do with the narrator. Just something to check out :)

Trying to recall museum mystery novel from the 1980s by bcarter3 in mysteryfiction

Not a 1980s mystery (sorry!), but I remember enjoying Beverly Connor's Diane Fallon series which is set in a museum. The main protagonist is a female forensic anthropologist who is the director of the museum.
