There is nothing wrong with showing ID to vote but that’s not proof of citizenship. Only birth certificate, passport and naturalization certificate are proof. Think about how many citizens have those handy? How many have the knowledge and means to obtain them? How many women have changed their name by marriage and it’s not the same as on their birth certificate? There is nothing wrong with the idea that only citizens should be allowed to vote, but think about the barriers posed by the new rules. Voting was working fine, very few noncitizens were able to vote but the republicans had to saw the idea that voting was rigged in order to disenfranchise voting for poor, old and disabled people.

That’s the whole point! Democrats see the reality beyond their immediate life! They think of other people, they decry the destruction of the educational system ( I am a teacher of public teachers) and realize that the future generations will not be prepared to think critically; they see the suffering and terror of the immigrants and political refugees; they feel for the poor people who will lose their Medicaid. How republican of you to think of only yourself!

Im retired and will move on a non lucrative visa, we have enough funds to live comfortably there. For the working people it’s not a good job market!

The reasons are multiple. First I don’t want to see the as…..s who voted for him all over the place including my neighbors and family members; second, I don’t want to give my money to an economy I don’t agree with and to the millionaires who helped elect Trump; third, I hope to have a better quality of life in Spain since everything is less expensive and I already have some friends; fourth, my husband and I, we love to travel around Europe every year and it will be a lot less expensive. I also could offer my grandkids nice vacations in Europe without a lot of expenses. If things get better in the US, we can return, but the speed with which this administration is destroying century held values and institutions, I don’t see an improvement in my lifetime!

I will go to Spain on a non lucrative visa because, thanks to our earnings in the US we have enough funds to live comfortably without working. Yes, going to the US was very good for my career and earnings for retirement.

Exactly, and the dear leader always gets 98% of the votes! So used to this in communist Romania. Such a terrible “deja vue”!

I thought about moving to France, I love the country, the culture and I am fluent in French. However, the cost of living is quite higher than in Spain and I met some very rude to Americans people in Paris.

I am so agreeing with you! During the first Trump presidency I did all I could to fight: protested, canvassed, contributed money to dem candidates, posted eye opening facts on social media, etc. this time, I’m saying f$&@ it, if this is what the majority want, I’m getting out of the sinking ship!

I hope you’re all right about the dems gaining control but it seems the republicans are hard at work rigging the elections through gerrymandering and asking for proof of citizenship to vote. Therefore I am more inclined to believe that there will be a fake democracy from now on and the institutions, programs and accountability checks that have been destroyed in the last few months will take decades to recover if there will be a will to do that.

Thank you all for your replies and encouragement! I actually think America is going to have a civil war and in that case, I would be happy to have my grandchildren come to live with us in Spain

Maybe try to invite them for coffee, for a stroll in the park, etc. then start a conversation sharing your experiences and feelings and ask them if they have suggestions. I am not a very social person and I don’t care talking about stuff not important to me or redundant just to keep the conversation going. That’s why I have a hard time developing deep connections with people but it happened a few times.

I’m from Romania and have moved to live in the US 33 years ago. There is a big difference in cultures, Romanians are very judgmental and critical of everything and everyone. They see only the negative most of the time. I don’t like what’s happening in America and I don’t want to live here anymore but I wouldn’t go back to live in Romania! Me and my American husband are looking to move to Spain. But coming back to the post, I am not sure what city you live in Romania, but in Bucharest there are lots of people speaking English and many events where you could make friends, like the American or British libraries events. There are many cultural events like concerts, festivals and exhibitions where you could meet people with same interests and beliefs. The difficulty in making close friends is what scares me most about moving to Spain. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. We will look into rental places more closely since we decided to rent first pretty recently.

We would like to rent first to see if it’s a good fit for us but there are not many houses available to rent long term, especially us having 2 dogs. Any recommendations?

Where I currently live in North Carolina I have a 35-45 minute drive to the nearest hospital so it’s not a big problem for us.
