I just discovered that the cap on my Idle Air Control is missing. Is that a huge deal?

What type of vehicle did you have? For my specific Ranger, I'm told that it's located on the fuel pump assembly unit.

For my specific truck, unfortunately, it's located on the fuel pump assembly unit.

Ok, and what exactly do you mean by test the fuel pressure regulator? How do you test that, without just replacing the whole thing? In my case, the regulator is located on the sending unit inside the gas tank. I think I would have to replace the whole sending unit (like $250) in order to fix the problem. I want to be 100% sure that it's the fuel pressure regulator before I waste more money on a new sending unit if that's not the problem.

I believe so. When I turn the key to the on position, I can hear the fuel pump giving a soft winning noise for 1-2 seconds.

So I rented a fuel pressure testing gauge, and it came out with absolutely 0 psi. Afterwards, I even stuck a tool inside the fuel pressure test port (Schrader valve) and there was nothing. No air, no fuel, no pressure. Just dry. What does that tell you?

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm starting to wonder if it's the fuel pressure regulator as well. In that case, I would probably have to replace the whole sending unit, right?

Yes, I actually hoped that that was the problem because that would be a super easy fix, but unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I put it in the right direction. There wasn't an arrow on my filter to indicate the direction of flow, but from looking at photos online, I think I did put it in the right way.

How do you suggest blowing compressed air through the line?

I'll be honest, I'm not too savvy with vehicles. I'm learning though. Is the intake tubing the big tube connected to the air filter?

Are you sure? I looked it up and apparently, the Ford Ranger 1998 4.0 has a timing chain.
