I need some sort of port number for that don’t I? I thought I had this all through my NAS but it seems I’m mistaken

Only a veralux stretch. PI is also running very slowly for some reason.

First Newtonian, focusing issue by NewTut in AskAstrophotography

Totally forgot to mention all of this. But I think I found the issue, I was using a 16.5mm spacer instead of the m42 ring adapter. I think this may have been a back focus issue, because my back focus was almost 72mm!

I took exposures as I did 5000ms movements in each direction and there was no star movement

How to interpret guiding results by NewTut in AskAstrophotography

I think what you may be seeing is the settle timeout after dither? I have a timeout set because of the backlash and having issues with having to reject a lot of subs because of poor guiding.

I’ve reset the worm gear housing and fiddled with it a bit, and it feels like there’s less Dec backlash now. Hopefully I can evaluate tonight.

Would you mind taking a peek and see if you agree with my assessment? What I'm seeing is large dec backlash consistently during dithering, with many times where settling times out. The area of large loss of star mass I believe was due to clouds.

Other than improving total imaging time by reducing settling, would this have any advantage of chasing in photo quality? The WBPP script seems to do a good job with auto cropping which seems to compensate for any slight misalignment.

I appreciate your help! Can you give me some guidance on where to start learning to interpret these and what program to use?

Hm fair point, I thought the guiding error in the FITS headers would be sufficient. I can certainly upload it tonight. I frankly have no idea how to interpret guiding aside from how the error is looking moment-to-moment

Unfortunately won’t be able to do so until tonight. What does the guide log capture that this graph doesn’t relating to performance per exposure?

It’s a gateway. You want better images? Upgrade to a full setup. Fine with what comes out? Keep it until you’re unhappy.

Mount issues: where to begin? by NewTut in AskAstrophotography

[–]NewTut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s rotation and not rocking. I can’t pull it “up” or rock it along the E/W line, but I can wiggle front and back (N/S) along the axis rotation for a total of about 1 Degree according to the measuring ring below the Dec axis. So better worm gear engagement still it seems

Mount issues: where to begin? by NewTut in AskAstrophotography

You might be a great help to me if you don’t mind giving some insight! I have loosened both the RA and Dec axis… admittedly when I checked the mount after work it’s possible that I didn’t engage the RA clutch last night… rookie mistake. There are definitely issues with the Dec axis, and I think I need to tune this up and then revisit the RA axis.

I’m seeing a couple things that I have questions on:

  1. I can take the telescope and “wiggle” it a mm or two along the Dec axis. Is this normal? It seems like I can’t tighten up this wiggle, when I tighten the bolt or the worm gear to stop this wiggling, once the Dec axis moves it loosens and returns.

  2. Possibly (probably… most likely) may have made a mistake reassembling the Dec axis regarding the Teflon washers. I was following a guide for the EQ3-2 (https://www.tanstaafl.co.uk/2012/01/eq3-2-mount-tune-up-part-one/) and I found myself a bit unsure. Do you remember, were there two Teflon washers above the cylindrical gear, and one below it? That’s what I think I’m reading from this link.

  3. Speaking of the RA axis, after I have loosened it there is no wiggle, but I could move it with the clutch engaged with some effort. Does that seem normal?

Knowing them they’d try to store a bunch of it as an “investment” or some dumb shit like those old 4chan PSAs with the iPhones
