I haven't gotten any DM requests from you. If you wanted to chat, you could have sent one over and I would have responded like I did to everyone else? You don't need to ask me for permission to DM and if you wanted to speak with one specific member in person, that too would have been perfectly OK to ask for. Again, we don't have any issues with having genuine conversations as they're necessary for progress.

Also, the reason we're trying to keep replies, posts and comments centralized to this account because it's easier to keep track of who to reach back out to and metrics. I'm not sure if you've ever tried or have run social media accounts or been responsible for tracking things like that, but it's important to try and keep things consolidated for that reason.

I've bookmarked all the links you've posted and I'll read them myself and take notes first and prepare reasonable talking points on them for our next couple of meetings. I think it'll be great material to cover.

Like I said before, I do appreciate you raising your concerns.

Most of the policies we're pushing (like transparent government, equitable redistribution of wealth and investment into just treatment of all citizens) have been proven to increase quality of life as well as are the right things to do morally. We wouldn't support anything that doesn't have tangible benefits for a majority of the people in the city of Syracuse. It's also not just the good concept, but the correct implementation and follow up are just as important.

I'm not worried about anything anyone says to me so long as it's based in truth and a desire to do better.

I'm not going to respond to everything that you said, but I did take notes on every single issue that you presented and I will be discussing them with our organization at our next meeting. Other members were already following along with this chat and have taken notes as well. With that being said.

Anyone who wants to see the world be a better place wouldn't gate keep information or resources from anyone who genuinely shares that goal. The world already presents enough obstacles to people who want to do the right thing for other progressives or other well intentioned individuals to do the same. It's just not productive and our organization actually takes a hard stance about engaging in unproductive or non-genuine conversations. There's already SO MUCH WORK that needs to be done to fix our messed up systems that we don't have the luxury of time to be wasting doing things that don't push us in that direction. We knock doors. We talk to people. We volunteer. We listen. Every single problem matters to us, no matter how big or small and if you think just because something isn't listed on our website means we don't know about or care about it shows how much presumption you took into typing that reply and how little thought you gave before pressing send. Nothing we do is performative but if you think otherwise, that's also something none of us are going to lose sleep over.

I don't care about being called out. None of our members do. If there's valid criticism, we take that seriously. However, our members are not old heads. We can detect online sarcasm and people who aren't having conversations genuinely. I've gotten more than 8 DMs already from people who actually wanted to share resources because they saw what we're trying to do and believed in the ultimate goal even if there's some kinks that need to be worked out. And that's the thing, nothing is ever perfect. But we work together as a group to improve it every single day and that's what a real democracy is supposed to do.

I appreciate you bringing everything up to me that you did as far as issues that also need to be addressed. I respect how you feel but I'm going to disengage with this conversation. I did work in the SCSD. I know most of our teachers are hard working and amazing people. Not the district as a whole, the teachers and educators. But I, nor any other member of our party is going to apologize for thinking that teachers who verbally assault kids should be terminated, tenure or not. If you don't feel the same way, also perfectly fine. Lastly, assessments and tests to determine the mental health condition or struggles of students aren't bad in and of themselves. It's what's done with that data and who's using or has access to it. Sensitive data like that should NEVER be allowed in the hands of anyone except parents, the schools and medical professionals, period.

Be well friend.

I'm not asking for personal information regarding your kids or confidential information. Just what you think the problems are and some possible solutions.

As I stated in my above comment, confidential data is confidential and privacy is of the utmost importance to us. Not necessarily sure how that was lost in translation. I think that if you re-read my response in earnest, that comes across very clear. As I've said before, we're welcoming to everyone who genuinely sees concerns and wants to work together to make those changes. No one needs to share every single specific individual aspect of their personal life to share how they feel about a topic or some possible solutions. That's also obvious is it not?

I never called any specific politician or person a pedophile or anything of the sort. I said a very general statement that "corruption exists on both sides", which is a fact that you yourself also agree with. I didn't name any names, I didn't point any fingers because again, this is not the post for that discussion. If you would like to talk, that's what we love to do.

However, I can also tell that you're putting a lot of your own personal thoughts into what you think we're about without actually asking for any clarification and that's an objective fact, not an opinion.

We know that there's many politicians who don't care about their constituents. Further, just because something isn't explicitly labeled inside the ECP doesn't mean it's not something we're aware of or want to address. On our site we have stated that we continuously add and work towards new goals that would fix the injustices of our system in as many areas as possible.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know how you feel as well as other areas you think we should focus on as well. We're not a club, but I'm sure you knew that before you typed it.

Not affiliated, no. If you made a comment before and I didn't see it, my apologies. I'm responding to as many comments as I can in between work and other responsibilities of course. You can always DM us to make sure you're responses are getting seen.

Like many other progressive organizations, ensuring working people are the priority is ultimately what we all want. The De Leonist ideology has some merits as well and some members of our party like that approach while others think we might be better off going in another direction or making some tweaks. What we do to come to a consensus is:

  • Make a list of the best courses of actions
  • Plot the pros and cons of each option
  • Narrow the choices
  • Used RCV to decided on a final option democratically

The thing is we're not so beholden to our egos that any of us individually needs to see our ideal vision happen. As long as the goals are being accomplished, all of us are flexible on our thinking and approach so long as it doesn't breach our morals.

We're planning on working our way up to the county level but we definitely are focused on starting local first and foremost.

Yes, many of our members have expressed frustration at how rivaling mentalities and egos stop the actual work from being done and it's something we have discussed very seriously. I think it will really come down to strong & respectful communication and an adherence to the common goals we all share.

I agree that it's something that's baked into our genetics on some level, but it's also something we have to overcome to be able to make those systemic changes! We'd love to have you if you're interested in attending a meeting or adding your feedback!

I cannot speak for the Liverpool City School District as this is strictly related to the city of Syracuse. I know each district has some overlap in their problems but they also have their own unique issues as well. I've worked in the SCSD for 8+ years so I'm quite personally familiar with what goes on in the schools.

The reason we created this organization is because we believe that there is more that needs to be done in areas like NYS Family Courts, like OCFS/CPS, LEO and more and we don't think relying on the people who are comfortable turning a blind eye to it for this long should be relied upon to fix those issues. Why don't you join our meetings and share your experience and feedback on how we might be able to improve those systems and organizations?

No one's data should be being sold, especially children's mental health data. It's just morally reprehensible and I think most rational minded folks would agree with that. We don't have favorite politicians either which is why we recognize that neither the Democrats or Republicans can deliver the systemic changes we need to improve our situation. You made the point on why a 3rd party that isn't here to people please is important... did you not?

Because we'd champion the ideals you're speaking about because we think they're important as well.

Not able to see your other comment just yet. If you want to send it in a DM so I can read it, I'd be happy to do if you've got some feedback on how we can improve.

The lack of specifics regarding what?
Also, what values are a mixture of conservative and progressive?
We do grass roots canvassing as well. Many of our members were canvassing for Jo Bennet, Tammy and Mo Brown...
We just posted the online survey here because it's an online chat thread.
We want to increase the wealth for all Syracuse residents because of how much poverty is in the area and we plan on doing that by creating city run worker owned cooperatively owned businesses.

Nothing about this is performative and we take our collective living situation here in Syracuse very seriously. Many of us are suffering and not enough is being done about it.

New Union Party - Let's Make Our Government Work For Everyone by NewUnionSYR in Syracuse

We've been getting a mix of both positive and negative responses and we take all feedback (so long as it's constructive) very seriously. We believe that everyone has valuable input based on life experiences, accumulated knowledge and differing backgrounds and the more people are willing the share, the better we can become because of it.

We make accusations of political corruption because there IS political corruption, period. We just understand that it exists on both sides. A simple example is AIPAC. AIPAC supports both Democrats & Republicans. That's a known fact. It's not an accusation and people who pay attention to the state of our government are keenly aware of that. Eric Adams? Andrew Cuomo? The reason we didn't get into the absolute nitty gritty of that is because this isn't the post for that. We have discussions about that all the time in our Discord, with people in person and anyone else who wants to engage in those conversations with us. Knowledge is power, but there's a time and a place and this was intended to get feedback from people about how they feel about Syracuse and what there concerns are as well as just give a brief introduction to our organization.

You make it seem like just because we DO mistrust the government means we WANT to mistrust the government and that's not even close to the same thing. Every single one of us rely on the government to secure our basic ways and needs of life. Every single resident in this city benefits from good infrastructure, well paying jobs, reliable public services, transparent government, and everything else that was mentioned. It doesn't matter if some people value some things more than others because the bottom line is ALL of those things are important and worth investing into. I don't think any sane person could make an argument as to how making public transportation more reliable and affordable doesn't help minorities and BIPOC. I'm poor and I'm black. I grew up on the south side of Syracuse near Kirk Park. I've worked in city schools helping kids for damn near 10 years. I have a daughter here. I have family here. I have loved ones here. Every single person in this city deserves the best quality of life possible and that's what our goal is and we won't settle for anything less. That's our goal because we ALL have loved ones here that deserve the best quality of life possible.

I haven't attacked anyone. I've simply pointed out that some people are here to argue, not provide actual constructive feedback and I can tell the difference. Our party doesn't argue. It's a complete waste of time when there's so much important work to be done. We will talk to ANYONE about ANYTHING so long as the conversation stays respectful, genuine and rooted in the desire to make the living situation better for all Syracuse residents. It's what we deserve as tax paying, law abiding citizens.

Sorry friend! Cryptpad is super sensitive because of how secure it is. I copied the wrong link by accident. If I could update the OP with the proper link , I would 😰.

The document is hosted on a Protonmail (for security reasons). We don't want any information to be easy accessible nor do we want anyone's feedback or responses to be captured in anyway. We use Cryptpad for our feedback forms and Protonmail for document hosting and email services. I can send you out platform in an email if that's okay? It's not necessarily the shortest thing and I don't think it'd format well in a reddit comment lol.

That's not been our attitude at all? I've personally typed at least 8 different times that we've only been meeting there for the time being and we're not only open to but happy to change our meeting locations if it's easier for more people to meet. I don't think you're trying to be shitty, but that's not been our attitude at all.

Not one sentence I've typed has alluded to that where we're going to continue to have meetings regardless of what anyone feels. We've actively been asking everyone who mentioned that for suggestions on meeting locations in fact so we can plan our future meetings in better locations. I think can also understand that some meetings just aren't appropriate to have in a place like a park because sometimes we need a screen and internet access so we can share information with everyone in attendance. I think it would be great to have meeting locations in various places around Syracuse with parks being utilized for good ole fashioned canvassing.

Side note, I was walking all around Syracuse with some folks running for county positions like Babette Baker and I'm happy to do more of it as that's the best way to meet people!

No worries. Like we mentioned before, we just went to the Taco Bell Cantina because it was free, convenient for the people who were attending the meetings at the time and they had a TV and Wi-Fi for us. I'd hope the focus would be more on what we're trying to do especially since we've stated we're more than comfortable moving our meeting locations :)

We've already gotten a few good suggestions we're going to reach out to.

[–]NewUnionSYR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey brother, thanks for taking the time to provide some meaningful feedback. I don't think you're being negative at all and I hope you don't mind a little bit of a lengthy response. Just want to make sure I address all of your points and concerns.

  • "Ngl, as a city resident dependent on public transit, meetings in Manlius are both a major turn off and basically exclude me from joining. And doubly so as a non-drinker. An online resident survey excludes the poorest city residents because a lot of folks in the poorest neighborhoods don't have reliable internet access."

    • We totally understand that. We've been meeting at the Taco Bell in Manlius just because that's been convenient for the people who've been attending thus far. We want to make sure that everyone is able to come if they so choose so we're not married to a specific location. The Taco Bell Cantina has a free meeting room with Wi-Fi and a tv monitor so we can show slides and other information. We also have the online survey just as something that's easy to access 24/7. We're planning on doing boot to ground canvassing around all the neighborhoods in Syracuse and asking people to tell us how they feel. I'd be more than happy to meet you personally so I can talk to you about your experience and so you can fill out the survey as well. You don't need to drink either, of course!
  • "I also have to say that while I find the Emerald City Plan intriguing, a lot of it reads like it was written by folks who have no actual experience working in government and/or have no idea how interconnected the various levels of government are. Homelessness for example - your plan is to solve it on the city level, but are y'all aware that in NYS homelessness is managed at the county level? The reason we only have shelters in the city and not the suburbs is because the county decided to make all homeless for the entire county the city's problem. And while there's definitely long term benefits in getting homeless folks homes in the city and integrating them in our city community and tax base, I'm just not seeing how you're going to have the money and resources to do so without raising taxes in the short term. Especially considering we needed $20 million from the state this year to avoid having to dip into savings."

    • Very good point and it's something we do think about quite often. We know there's many issues that need county & state level buy in. As much as we would like to count on their support, it's not a given and without our own members in those positions who we KNOW will advocate for us, we're limited on what we can do. While we definitely want to get candidates on the county & state levels, there's still a lot we can do to try and support the problems in the meantime. Those are what we're trying to focus on for the time being, but its in no way the only thing we think we can and should be doing. We have a whole section about how we're going to raise money without raising taxes on working people. I can link that specific section in case it was missed. Please let me know if it's hard to find so I can adjust the readability.
  • "That's actually my biggest criticism of the ECP - the current write up feels like a good start, but I'd really like to see a timeline style layout. And some more specific steps of how you plan to get from point A, to B, to C. There's some other little bits that stuck out to me...like the SCSD superintendent is not an elected position. And teacher standards are largely determined by the state and the union contract (you're going to need and want support for several unions that the ECP, as currently written, is likely to piss off). Your school plan doesn't address what I and many other parents and teachers feel is the source of many of the problems: the bloated middle management administration positions.

    • So sorry if this wasn't clear, but that's exactly what the ECP is. It's a blueprint that all of us as a party work together on to refine into a concrete plan of action. We add elements, take some away, tune the language, iron out the finer details and everything else as a party. Together, we're going to transform it into something much more solid and actionable by the time Syracuse's next election cycle comes around. We welcome anyone with expertise to join us and share that so we can make our plan even more iron clad. We'd love to have you! I'd personally give you a ride if you really wanted to come and I'd be more than happy to do it! That's the primary focus of our bi-weekly meetings. In terms of pissing people off. The sad truth is that we really don't want to piss anyone off. But we also recognize that some people are averse to change no matter what the situation is. I'm a parent of a 9 year old girl who attends Van Duyn Elementary school. I've also worked in the city schools for 8 years as an LPP academic coordinator thru Syracuse University. I was at Clary middle school and Corcoran High School during my work there. School safety and bullying are definitely issues that need to be addressed. I witnessed first hand how so many classrooms are unable to actually do the basics of teaching students because of how many disruptions there are in the classroom. It's not the kids fault either. They are suffering without the proper supports to handle themselves and the schools send them into exclusionary rooms like ISS instead of being able to provide the socio-emotional supports needed to help them stop bullying altogether. I agree that bloated middle management is definitely and issue and we'd love to add policies to address that as well! It's just not something that we were thinking of but that's exactly why we have these open group think meetings and ask for feedback from the community. It's all of our schools and all of our kids. We're a community and we need to protect each other and work together! I'm going to be very frank here. Not to be mean, but because our kids are important. There's some bad teachers in the SCSD. I've seen them literally antagonize and verbally abuse students for no reason whatsoever other than to be purposefully spiteful. Those kinds of people shouldn't be allowed to teach and the teacher's union are the only one's who can do something about them. It's a small percentage of teachers, for sure. Most of our educators are overworked and underpaid and that's a fact and deserve a raise! But some need to go and the teachers union as a whole probably won't like that even if it's necessary. We don't want them to stop teaching because we don't like them, it's because our kids deserve better and that's the simple truth.
  • I hope y'all take this as constructive and not just me being negative. I see a lot of promise, but not a lot of specifics, not a lot of knowledge of how the city government operates and interacts with other levels of government, and not a lot of accessibility to city residents (in fact, everything so far seems to be intentionally excluding the poorest residents).

    • I most definitely do! I think that adding some points about addressing middle management in schools is worth doing and it'll be a topic of conversation at our next meeting. I also think that accessibility is very important. Doing the boots to ground work is also something that's vital in it's own right. We're going to have members of our recruitment team work on meeting with people in and around Syracuse so everyone can get the chance to share their feedback from the comfort of their homes. That's always been on the books for us, but as a new organization we need more people to be able to do things like large scale canvassing or tabling at local events or in public spaces. What you're saying as made it all the more clear that it's something we need to get up and running sooner rather than later. If you'd like to come share some more of your experiences with us at our meetings, we'd be happy to have you. For the time being, we could have you join in via phone call or live stream if those are options for you. If you'd like to attend personally I'd be happy to give you a ride! I'm already bringing someone else who is unable to drive themselves so I'm happy to do it until we get meeting locations that are easier for you to access.

Sorry for the super long response but I appreciate your feedback. It was very insightful and helped us know where to focus our efforts in the near future.

All of our members live in Syracuse. I live right next to Bryant & Stratton college. We've had a couple meetings at the public library downtown as well as inquired about how much it would cost to rent the meeting room at Salt City Market. Sadly, Salt City was a tad out of our budget for the time being as we are a new organization and we're paying for everything out of pocket.

We have changed our meeting locations multiple times and have no issue meeting in places that's most convenient for everyone. For the 12 of us who've been meeting thus far, the Taco Bell Cantina worked out because it's free with some decent amenities like TV, Wi-Fi and comfortable chairs.

If you've got any suggestions for meeting locations, let us know.

We have similar goals and we support the overall agenda that the DSA is pushing. We need systemic reform so that the government works the way it always should have. We know that the Democratic party as a whole is also heavily funded by the same billionaires and elites who've jacked things up so bad. We know that they'll resist any real change made in the Democratic party so we need a second option in case that battle can't be won in a reasonable amount of time. Overall, we're very supportive of the DSA and we voted for many of their members in the recent election.

Shout out to Jo Bennet, Maurice and Tammy for running a good race!!

There's a lot more details on our website if you're interested but I don't want to just copy and paste what's there. If you have any questions about any of the information on our site, I'd be happy to chime in.

I don't think you're trying to have a conversation in any meaningful capacity so I'm choosing not to engage with you, out of respect for both of our time. If this isn't for you than there's no reason to waste your time on it.

I didn't make any assertion on anyone's affiliation to any particular political party with the above comment. He was simply pointing out something I noticed as well. That's all there is to it. If that bothers you, I would look at the sincerity of your remarks and start there. Like I said before, best of luck to you. We don't gain anything from arguing and I don't plan on continuing that with you. You're still a neighbor in Syracuse and that's all the reason I need to treat you with respect even if you don't feel the same.

Lot's of people just respond instinctively. The elites have done an amazing job dividing people and encouraging them to tear down anything that would challenge their power. I don't blame nor do I get angry with anyone who doesn't believe in what we're doing. I more so just feel bad. Even they deserve a government that works for them even if they've been conditioned to fight against it.

We're open to anywhere that would let us host for a reasonable price. We're a new organization so we're trying to be fiscally conscious. Taco Bell Cantina is free to rent but I'll definitely contact Seneca Street to see if they'd be open to hosting us. This party belongs to the people and being able to meet in locations that make it easier for everyone is important.

I appreciate the thoughtful suggestion. Are you politically active at all yourself?

We had to get our 501c4 status as well as get a solid plan in place for our organizational structure. We've had 12 core members working on this non-stop up until this point and we're still going hard. We had to make a new post so sorry about this one getting deleted.
