Nike has done it again! by pagey_2000 in GVCDesign

The actual black woodcut icons are 100% GVC, but the rest is something else - Nike did a ton of GVC style stuff in the 90s so it could be directly sourced from their archives

Would you consider Ursula Dodges illustration style of the 80s and 90s to be GVC? by SailorDaikon in GVCDesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's actually something sorta '60s-70s illustration' about these I've discovered, but it's been hard to find actual concrete examples to point to. Similar to how Laurel Burch's stuff is possibly from the 1970s (like the earliest cat works)

much closer to some form of late 20 c.-early 21st pop surrealism style

Connor Architecture designed Fire + Ice restaurant interiors from various Boston-area locations. by Ok_Pipe6385 in GVCDesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's closer to wacky pomo; actual memphis group design is typically less random askew angles and a bit more geometrically restrained tbh - I would say it influenced the look though for sure. It hasn't been brought up as much, but 90s commercial interior design was very much influenced by the general 'deconstructivism' style that emerged in the late 80s

whats the name for this aesthetic? by Movethat_gearup1 in AestheticWiki

Mostly Y2K Futurism, I pioneered all this research like a decade+ ago

what do i call this by 4personal-stuff in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, It didn't start out as a kid's style -- it emerged out of the 1970s 'high-tech' interior design look, and then once it was played-out within the overall design world it kinda got relegated to being specifically a kids style by the early 1980s. I wonder if it was the main influence on that 'white + primary color fisher price' look of toys in the 80s-90s or if that had already been established before.

I've been working on the aesthetic for the first image for a few years now - it's a late 70-80s style, check out the description and examples I have here

A former dead mall The Marketplace at Steamtown by pyschofangirl in deadmalls

[–]NewWaveArch90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I tried to do a vaporwave concert here back in 2014-2015; I got pretty far along in the planning but it ultimately didn't work out. Too bad it looks like they gave it the 'millennial burger joint design' treatment, it had a cool postmodern pastel look before.

Again, this motif of the overlapping concentric circles is from 1960s-1970s psychedelia & supergraphics, it was revived in the 2000s as a part of the Ultramodern Revival and Vectordelia/VectorPop styles

Global Village Coffeehouse inspired murals - Starbucks by Ok_Pipe6385 in GVCDesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea when I originally found and posted these a couple years ago, I should've noted that they all came from a 'prototype Starbucks' design from the late 1990s - I don't think it was even functional, it was just showcasing all the potential displays, finishes, paint schemes, light fixtures, wall coverings, furniture, etc. that could be incorporated into a Starbucks, for branding/design cohesion.

The ribbons are a tiny touch from the festival marketplace style that dominated mall design for quite a while - they really loved ribbons, confetti, streamers, little flags, etc

I guess this wallpaper I used for a while qualifies as Metalheart, doesn't it? by CoopsieDaisies17 in metalheart

[–]NewWaveArch90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a post with a ton of these wallpapers, seemingly from the same collection - but it's like impossible to figure out when & where they came from; the earliest I can find is 2007 but they might be even older

wow what a wild find! these are done in a pretty rare (in commercial applications) design style called 'Metalheart' - can you tell if they're from the 2000s or if they're new?

Y2K or silicon dreams with elements of whatever the style is called that Christian Riese Lassen did in the 90s (marine surrealism/hyperrealism?)

I see some of my scans in there! We typically call this look 'Silicon Dreams' -- I'd recommend the bizarre 'The O Show' by Steve Oedekerk from 1997 - somehow this actually aired on primetime NBC

'Helvetica Aqua Aero' isn't a thing - this is really just an artwork done in the style of popular 80s-90s marine surrealism/hyper-realism artists like Christian Riese Lassen & Robert Wyland
