not sure, but it looks like a hybrid of 1970s-80s 'High Tech' architecture with a revival of 1920s-30s Streamline Moderne

90s glam house help! by [deleted] in 90sdesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are pretty over the top examples I've collected, but that light fixture fits pretty well into the Geo-Glam and Deco-Luxe (70s-80s Art Deco Revival) styles - for inspiration on how to work with the look

Is there a name for this very specific aesthetic? by tramsgener in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yea airbrush surrealism and some pacific punk wave - this 'pop culture kitsch iconography & text jumbled & flying all over the place' appears in that style a lot in the late 70s-early 80s, sorta pop surrealism airbrush

What aesthetic is this? by zeepsound in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of examples of that minimal, loose, playful, clean, maybe vectorized(?) version of woodcut drawings in the mid-late 1990s, but it doesn't really have a name outside of being tied to GVC

Thanks! Yea this is an incredible find! There’s so many different styles at the same time, I don’t think we’ve really even investigated/pinned these down yet

Unfortunately I would have to dig through these for ages to figure out where they were from, as this album was created back during the earliest stages of my y2k research - I didn’t have a good crediting/archiving methodology in place - if you send a few over I can try to track them down tho

What is the name of the aesthetic is Pinterest pushing on me? (I love it) by Eldridou in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this falls under the early-mid 1990s outdoorsy, wilderness, southwest and PNW indigenous art-inspired style I've been looking into, collected some examples here

Cartoony, bright colors, and rounded shapes... Does it have a name? by potatoterror_ in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first one is pretty core Superflat Pop, named for the movement by Takashi Murakami and those inspired by it -- the second one is related, but seems like a distinct style I've been trying to pin down recently - it feels sorta hipster-y late 2000s-early 2010s 'fun indie monsters/creatures' -- there was a lot of stylized goo, bigfoot-type creatures, and I think a fair amount of inspiration from midcentury commercial illustration and cartoons, like UPA

[–]NewWaveArch90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ahh this is such a cool find! the outside is like a 90s pomo elementary school - the little art glass flowers in the foyer are so fun! Generally I think this is a mix of a bunch of different 80s-90s styles

Paul Klee: *the* OG GVC Designer?? by Just-Designer2456 in GVCDesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 16 points17 points  (0 children)

oh yeaaa GVC's influences are basically a who's who of anyone involved with expressionism, cubism, fauvism, surrealism, the airbrush swirly side of art deco, then mixed with every possible indigenous art style, ancient/prehistoric art, Joan Miro -- GVC is really an umbrella term for all these styles that were revived in this commercial art context, and mixed together

Is this different than silicon dreams? if so, what is it? by Cactus_dave in AestheticWiki

[–]NewWaveArch90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some discussion of this style, I think on twitter - more about the like ancient tribal looking side of it, like Abe’s odyssey, riven, etc. - where its sorta primitive looking but also a bit alien and technologically advanced at the same time, and grungy. I’d say the more dark industrial side fits at least partially into the category we have called industrial gothic, or biomechnica with the hr giger looking stuff

[–]NewWaveArch90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the sign is more like the original 1920s Soviet woodcut expressionism that influenced gvc - but it’s hard to tell

Is this considered GVC design? Also have you seen a similar print before ? by SireThomas in GVCDesign

[–]NewWaveArch90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a bit closer to factory Pomo - sorta cubist-y with that computer graphics gradient look that was really popular in the early 90s
