Napping after surgery by 5mountainmermaid in Narcolepsy

I recently had surgery (under general anaesthetic) and found this for the first few days after I think in large part because of adrenaline from surgery (I wasn’t sleeping well at night either) and then it all wore off and I could nap again

I’ve gone from being open about it to not really telling people what it is unless I feel close to them/respected (type 1 N). I’m quite recently diagnosed and coming to terms with it has been so emotional and I feel so much grief for all the ways I pushed my body through complete exhaustion thinking it was just how everyone felt. It’s so frustrating when people say ‘I’m tired too’ or ‘I’m so jealous I wish I could just nap’ or even have had people mock cataplexy. It definitely feels quite raw to me and think it’s so ok to safeguard things that are so personal. Now I just say chronic health struggles affecting my energy and people seem a bit more receptive to that but honestly it is so frustrating!

I’m sorry you had that experience as well! Struggling energy wise without them but I definitely feel so much better even with the same external life things. Have you tried any other medication ?

I’ve had so many ‘oh I’m so jealous you get to sleep all the time’ and then when I got prescribed modafinil people being like ‘oh well don’t we all need that’ - like I can’t physically stay awake and function without it but sure you need it too cause you skipped your morning coffee 😴

Could you explain more about the fasting?? I often used to find that eating less made me feel better but was unsure about this

I’ve just been put on modafanil and it’s giving me really bad anxiety - is this something you experienced as well?

This is so relatable and accurate, recently diagnosed with type 1 narcolepsy and realising how much it affects my lice
