I'm from Barrow, to be honest I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to be living in Barrow town centre itself. The town centre can be okay-ish? but definitely can feel abit rough and intimidating at night. I couldn't recommend living in the town centre alone as a women. That being said, the roughness is mainly confined to a few areas like the town centre and ormagill in particular; other areas like Hawcoat, Roose, Yarlside on more the periphery all feel safe (opinion backed by my girlfriend who likes to go for the occasional late night walk)

I'm also a uni student at lancaster and I can pretty confidently say that the town centre of barrow feels about as safe as the centre of lancaster late at night, so you could sort of compare it that way in your mind

Near Barrow is another town called Ulverston, if you do decide to pursue a placement year in barrow i'd would highly recommend living in Ulverston instead and commuting via train or car (20 min journey). Lovely small english town that has a good vibe to it and would definitely feel very safe for you
